From what I got from the comments, this story happened in Germany. Drinking age is 16 for beer and wine and 18 for harder liquor. Just to throw it out there, the USA actually has one of the higher drinking ages at 21 when it comes to alcohol consumption around the world. (In countries that allow it.) Usually, in most countries, it's 16-18 years old. Something to keep in mind if you travel outside the US.
