And yet they contributed to you living in an independent republic and one of the greatest nations, free from tyranny. If you think the US or it’s founding fathers are so bad, go to China. See how blacks are treated there or just watch a video on KZbin. This country has a chaotic and violent past, but we all braved the stormy waters...and we’re ALL the better for it.
@SBeeLove
@SBeeLove 4 жыл бұрын
Kyle Orr Umm, just no. White people benefited from the “founding” fathers, not black people. Black people just got liberties in the last 50 years, long after the “founding fathers”. There are honorable black heroes and heroines that get no mention for their efforts of bringing black people out of slavery and Jim Crow and time those very liberties today! Those are the people that blacks HAVE THE RIGHT to celebrate. Who are you to tell someone who they should consider a hero?? Also you are bringing up China like the comparison is supposed to make black people in the US feel a sense of acceptance and justification in their unfair experience? It’s people with a closed mind like YOU, who make race relation conversations more difficult. You aren’t even open to understanding what a hero is to the black experience and history in America. It’s so easy for you to dismiss the black perspective and assume that black people should glorify and display patriotism in the way that YOU do. That’s asinine and exactly why there can’t be an honest conversation, some people (YOU) aren’t willing to listen.

Statues mainly honor those that fought bravely in battle or in Lincoln's case did a great thing abolishing slavery. When will the monuments for Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James K. Polk, Zachery Taylor, Andrew Johnson, and Ulysses S. Grant (yes ma'am!), all of which owned slaves be removed or destroyed?

Are you that ignorant? You probably don’t even have slavery roots. Only 20% of blacks have slavery roots. The Irish were slaves? And The Chinese? AFRICAN KINGS OF THAT DAY SOLD THEIR OWN PEOPLE TO WHITE MEN! SOLD THEIR OWN SLAVES AND PRISONERS? SLAVERY IS STILL GOING ON IN AFRICA? WASHINGTON WAS A HUGE PART OF MAKING THIS COUNTRY WHAT IT IS TODAY! HE DIDNT WANT A KING TO RULE! HE WANTED FREEDOM! EQUALITY! MAYBE THE UGLINESS OF SLAVERY IS PART OF HISTORY.. BUT BLACKS WERENT THE ONLY SLAVES! AND SLAVERY DOESNT DEFINE THIS WONDERFUL COUNTRY!

Magna Blemur No, I have a love of history. I know History will always be. We choose to let it define us or we can choose to be empowered by how far our country has come. The Democrats are using the African Americans for votes. Do you know the history on the Democrat party? They were against ending slavery.. they were against affirmative action. They started the KKK, They put abortion clinics on every block in African American communities that kill 900 black babies a day. I hate how they are pawning Americans with racism and creating division. They dismiss people who speak logic or statistics with calling them a racist.

Those that contributed to this nation to be free from tyranny, to be an independent republic are hero’s in that sense. It’s not like Washington or Jefferson decided one day that owning slaves would be a great idea. It was the societal norm they grew up in. Slavery is older than civilization itself...so many ignorant people think it started with this country. Slavery is STILL in practice in some parts of the world...the ending of slavery is actually a relatively new phenomenon. That said, their contributions to make this an independent nation is in part why we’re one of the most progressive countries in the world. Also, Washington and Jefferson are common last names among black Americans...they’ll be a lot of name changing going on if we continue down this road. I do agree that many of these statues belong in a museum and not as commemorative monuments. I think that’s fair. It’s not like they’re being erased from history...no more than Hitler or Stalin. I think there’s a middle ground, but I don’t think we should hit the gas and fly off a cliff to one side.

We shouldn't be displaying statues honoring the confederacy on public land. They should be in museums or destroyed. In their place we should have memorials to the war dead and memorials to victims of slavery. We also need more public art honoring civil rights leaders, and art celebrating how far we've come as a society (and reminding us how far we have to go).
