I have an advanced degree from a top university, and I always looked at these incidents as something I would never fall for. But I just turned 68, and I can see how in 10+ years someone like me could be led into falling for such a scam. The woman who stood in. And stopped her is a HERO. Pay attention to your elderly family and friends, etc. Protect them like they protected you when you were young.

I'm thankful that Myndi intervened and called the police and kudos to the officer for stopping it. I hope the elderly lady understands now that she was being scammed. The bank would never have you send money that way. Not even chase bank.

After watching KZbinrs like Kitboga for years, it never ceases to amaze me the lengths these scumbags will go to convince/bully a victim into doing what they want. I've seen people pretend to have a child dying in the hospital. The scammer STILL insists that they leave and go buy gift cards or withdraw money from the bank. Once saw a scambaiter fake a heart attack on the call and the scammer (a woman that time) told him to just sit down with a glass of water, relax, then head to the bank. People need to either explain scams to elderly family members, or try to introduce them to a scambaiter they find entertaining, so they can learn what to look out for.
@michaelinhouston90865 ай бұрын
My brother saw a heated argument between a Walgreens checker and a woman customer trying to buy thousands in gift cards - the checker kept telling her she was being scammed and she knew all about it but the customer refused to believe it. Eventually the customer left but you can bet she went to another store.

Jim Browning is literally one of the best. I love his videos. He was also featured on a Marketplace episode about scammers, he keeps his identity hidden. Kitboga was on an episode as well talking about taking down a call center in India. One of my favorite Jim Browning videos is the one where he stops the guy at a 7-11 from buying a bunch of Google play cards while the scammer was on the phone, I believe it was somewhere in Canada.

I think she was just scammed and not aware of how the scams work. Those are the ones who get taken. It doesn’t mean she’s ready for supervision so much as Education. A good sit down talk, watch some scambaiting KZbin videos and she’ll be set.

Nah that's a fucked up judgement to make. I hope no one does that to you as you age. Do you even know how these scams work? They are very convincing and are engineered to get the victims to act quickly, without time to think, or face legal trouble. One of the ways they are so believable is they ask for the number to your local bank branch and then call "them" for you. Once the bank IVR picks up, another scammer gets on the line pretending to be the bank.
