When I was a kid we made a whole village of dollhouses for small dolls ( like 2 inch tall dolls) out of milk cartons. The shape already looks like a tall house with a pitched roof. The pouring hole becomes the chimney. You just cut out one side of the carton and you can use that piece you cut to make a floor for the second story. You can cut windows and doors and attach a row of them together like row houses.

Great ideas! I also upcycle the top part of the occasional milk carton by cutting the area around the cap to the size of a Mason jar lid and using that with the ring to close the jar. That way I can put liquids or small items into the jars and it makes pouring easier.

I use old socks as hair elastics too 😂 I also sew cloth pads with the ankle part of old sports socks. I really like the battery container idea. We use bags but it can get confusing so I'll try this one. My mother in law gets her vitamins in those containers so I'll ask her to save them for us in the future.

Oooh that T-shirt basket is really cute. I have some old graphic Ts laying around that I could do this with, I wonder if the contrasting colors of the graphics will show on the final basket!
@MyGreenCloset3 жыл бұрын
I think the graphic would probably roll to the inside of the yarn? But I'm not sure, I haven't tried it with a graphic tee!

Plastic milk jugs/cartons and be cut into scoops for potting soil, dog food, De Icers, or many other things. I love recycling/up cycling glass candle holder (especially ones with the lids) into storage containers for cotton balls (organic), supplies or even re-use when I make my own candles. I always up cycle broken umbrellas by turning the canopies into reusable tote bag, make up bags, wristlets or children rain ponchos.

Interesting easy and useful projects. I do not have much for upcycling, purely as I only buy my fish, cheese, bread, fruit and vegetables all loose. Nothing packaged. Only wrapped in paper that can be recycled or my own reusable bags. It is not a problem to do this living in Switzerland. I only eat whole foods.

Great ideas! Sewing specific upcycling: I use toilet paper rolls taped together to wrap my traced sewing patterns around for storage. I'm also cutting my fabric scraps into long strips to eventually make a braided rug. I love using chalk paint because it is so easy and can be used on almost any surface.

More of these, please! I wonder, could you make a macrame-like hanging planter (small) out of tshirt yarn? Thank you!
@MyGreenCloset3 жыл бұрын
I definitely think you could!
@lestranged3 жыл бұрын
the yarn is stretchy though so make it much shorter than you think you want it. Once the plant is in there it will stretch longer.
@MyGreenCloset3 жыл бұрын
That's a good point! I will also add that it's probably better to cut your strips a bit wider to account for the extra weight.

You can also make planting pots out of oat milk cartons! I don't know why I've never thought about using them as regular containers too😂 Loved the envelope one as well! Some other upcycling/recycling stuff: I keep jars to use them as drinking glasses and as lunch boxes to put sliced veggies in (or spaghettis) and as flower vases and so on, and so forth, old ratty clothes are cut up into squares and become tissues, bottle caps are really useful to store very small things like earrings in, toilet papers rolls make for really good cat toys, and you can weave baskets from cut up newspaper 😊

Speaking of using paint from your can of paint on hand ... a cute/cool craft made from the paint can when empty is on "The White Cottage Company" 's channel : ) . Bonus, it is probably still easily recycled afterwards, as it's mainly just painted, in metal recycling and since once can still easily see what it is. My pet peeve is people up-cycling things which they likely won't keep or use long, and no-one but them is going to even like the thing, and what they do to it though, makes an otherwise readily recyclable item into an unrecognizable item, totally lost in a mountain of unrecyclable add-ons ... :) .

To get paint to stick better on smooth ceramic, glass or plastic surfaces, sandpaper is your friend. :-)

On that hair elastic make sure to not use moisture wicking sock or they will dry out your hair. Also you can use matte varnish on your little baking soda paint you painted.

So excited about the t-shirt yarn! I've been wondering how to do that for aaages. Also, thanks for the tips on the spent battery storage. One question: do you need to remove the tape before dropping them off for recycling? In my city (USA), most of the battery recycling drop-off points are at Universities, and they're just kinda boxes you drop batteries in. There isn't a lot of instruction.
@MyGreenCloset3 жыл бұрын
It's really fun to make things from t-shirt yarn 😊 You leave the tape on when dropping them off, it's so that it can't come in contact with metal or other batteries and accidentally spark. There really should be better instructions, it's also something I only recently learned about!
@Clairelaferret3 жыл бұрын
@@MyGreenCloset I just told my dad about the tape, and he said that used batteries can also occasionally produce hydrogen (extremely flammable!) so don't put the batteries in a sealed container.

For old socks, another use is as a disposable rag for gross cleaning , such as when moving into a new place ( we've bought a couple homes over the years which were in nasty condition, in parts... 1 dilapidated foreclosure and one just severely neglected in all the less obvious ways ( ceiling fans, light switch covers were NASTY ).

I tried to do a tawashi-style dishwashing "sponge" from t-shirt yarn, and I found that each time I use it small bits of textile come off and get into the sewage water, which I consider as pollution, even if it is a t-shirt made of cotton (it is dyed and who knows whether it gets filtered out properly when the water is cleaned, what fish eats it until then). If we talk about microfiber pollution from washing clothes then I shouldn't let textile shreds wash down the drain. Maybe some object which gets little friction/handling, like the basket in the video, is ok to be made with t-shirt yarn.
@MyGreenCloset3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it has raw edges that can fray/come apart so I wouldn't recommend using it for something like a washcloth, however baskets, oven mitts, trivets, and decor are all great uses!

Can anyone tell me what is „Jasso” (if that’s how it’s spelled) and if you can use it on plastic? I have some old Barbie accessories I’d like to repaint (a sofa and some shoes) but I don’t know how to go about it to make sure the paint doesn’t flake off.
