You are right. This is the only video and audio that clearly explains the process of manual pollination. I have been a vanilla grower myself and I found this to be the most challenging part of cultivating vanilla. Because, you have little time between the morning and the early afternoon to do this. Imagine growing vanilla commercially and wonder how many flowers one has to handle.

Very ,very ,interesting!!!!!I did not know this .I have a couple of creepers, and just now, a couple of minutes ago, someone told me this is a Vanilla creeper !!!! So I browsed through KZbin, and voila !!!! I saw your video ..I live in very, very hot, and tropical place of the world,, in south India, Asia. The heat now, is unbelievable, so I will move these creepers into the shade, water them sparingly,, and change their soil to a coco peat, and bark variety, thank you, very much

Oh bless your heart for showing the little spikes and little buds. I was up on the ladder looking at this strange looking growth that looks a bit like a flat leaf..which could be a new shoot..can't get close enough to get a good look, but I'm hoping. I've been waiting two years and this spring we got a man to pull back the shade cloth for us to increase the light and my fingers are crossed, but I'm thinking I will have to wait another year.

Looks like 8 of the 13 flowers I pollinated were successful. Probably would have had more had I not missed a few days of checking for flowers. That process was easy, now I think the hard part will be the curing process.

Marcy, definitely give it a try. Unfortunately, all of the pods eventually turned black and fell off about a month after pollination. We had an especially hot and rainy summer here in SW Florida so I'm wondering if that was the problem. I successfully rooted a cutting from the mother plant and have another (different species) vanilla vine taking off. Will try again next year.

Note to sportjunky: my vine has been growing straight up the trunk of a guava tree and this year it has flowers growing on different parts of it and it hasn't reached the top yet. That's just one part of it that I can't reach anymore but there are other ends growing on supports that grow to the side, down, and up! I think that's what you were telling me about how they would bloom the best. Thanks again.

@@MyGreenPets so, thankfully, I did get 1 big phat gorgeous vanilla pod! I think I may have been too delicate with the pollinating process. Will do better next time:) perhaps due to our climate, the Vanilla pod was ready to pick very quickly. It went from green to yellow looking like a banana, and before I had a chance to take a closer look, it blew off in a storm :( I was heartbroken, couldnt find it for days (oh I looked) and thought perhaps a critter made off with it. Of course, while not looking, it appeared camouflaged in with some leaf litter, It now looks like a brown banana :) Now the big decision, what to do next? TY again for your wonderful video!

How did you build your green house for your vanilla plants. I live in utah with heavy winds at times. I could do the hydroponic and the geothermal for the growth of the plants. However I need to know first what I should do the the green house to be stable enough to with stand the winds and the winter snow.
