Hi my friend thank you! You have more Greek than me! 😃 Indeed we are not, Kika below has a solid point as we were the same peoples until the Ottoman era. I do not want to come across as bias but yes during the ottoman era Cypriots would have converted to Islam either by themselves or forcibly through having to pay heavy taxes or face the consequences. Many Cypriots were crypto Christians may have acted like they converted but practiced the faith underground.

Interesting findings, thank you for sharing your results. I am half “Greek” Cypriot on my mother’s side, I’ve done DNA test myself and as mentioned by other commenters other companies do call out “Cyprus” as its own identity - I know this is true for Living DNA and Ancestry test results. While Cyprus today has mainly two ethnic divides of people that associate themselves cultural as “Greek” or “Turkish”, largely everyone of any lengthy Cypriot origin is actually a mix of the different groups that habituated on the island. You mentioned a few, the Phoenicians, Venetians, Greeks (largely those of the Peloponnese and also close ties to the Minoans of ancient Crete), West Asia and Africa. To have a better understand of Cypriot genetics, it helps to go back deeper into history during the times of antiquity and the Middle Ages. Historically, Cyprus is now largest acknowledged to be the ancient Kingdom of Alashiya. Other ancient people during that time frame that left their generic print on Cyprus are the Canaanite people of the Levent and the Hittites of Anatolia. I theorize that most of “West Asian” DNA that Cypriot’s share is likely from the Hittites, as they had a large empire that extent past Anatolia into Mesopotamia and the Levent, including Cyprus. Here is link to an interesting video of the history of Cyprus back when it was known as Alashiya: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gniqnIivp6mSq5Y and it talks about many of the ancient people that inhabited Cyprus. Interestingly enough, Cypriot people, whether they lay claim to being Greek or Turkish, share common ancestors. Here is link to a scientific journal on generic finding of Cypriots: journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0179474 This all goes to show, we should all be proud to have ties to a beautiful island with unique, rich and diverse history of cultures from many regions: Continental Europe, the islands and countries boarding the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Asia Minor, Africa and even Arab proper. They all left their mark on the island’s history and all contributed to the people Cypriots are today. In the end, we should all be kind and respectful to each other… the more we learn about history and genetics, the more we should all see that we are all brothers and sisters and are far more like then we are different no matter where we come from and how we choose to identify culturally ✌️🕊

These are quite inaccurate first of all so it's not that simple. Greeks from the Myceneans and onwards had many genetic groups because the Myceneans and later Greeks mixed and Hellenized many areas like Cyprus, Crete, Asia Minor etc. West Asian(the Asia Minor part) was before the Turks from people living in Asia Minor and adjacent areas. Also the part from Mesopotamia was very influential in the whole Middle East and the original population of Cyprus maybe was in this Dna group. So it was from antiquity not from the Ottomans, Ottomans had little influence and their Dna also had much of the indigenus hellenized or not people of Asia Minor.

@alashiya95363 жыл бұрын
I think you're interpreting the results incorrectly. The components of your make-up are likely much older than the Ottoman era. The eteo-Cypriot make-up itself is probably enough to justify Western Asian heritage, eteo-Cypriots came from Levantine and Southern Turkey tens of thousands of years ago so are thus Western Asians by definition. Turkish Cypriots are very similar to Greek Cypriots because up until the Ottoman conquest they were the same population (eteo-Cypriot / Greek mix), but since then have had influences from Ottomans (including Asian and Northern African heritage)

Helllo Kyriacos, I understand your argument but when I refer to the ottoman era I am pointing out that it is not far fetched for Cypriots to have ottoman blood. Maybe the western Asian is as you see Turk or from the Greek population that inhabited it before the Turks settled there, but there is no way to know for sure. We see some very dark Cypriots and some very light Cypriots so some are of European ancestry and some are eastern ancestry. My results show a quarter of everything that was in the region throughout history Greek, Italian , West Asian and Jewish.
@alashiya95363 жыл бұрын
@@christosadamou4468 of course it's not impossible. It likely happened just not that much. Your Western Asian component is most likely due to Northern Levantine and Anatolian farmer migrations to Cyprus of the Paleolithic and Neolithic. The Ottoman contribution was probably minimal due to religion. During the 300+ years of Ottoman Cyprus it was the Christians that were converting to Islam, not vice versa, as they were at a disadvantage due to Islam being the religion of the ruling class and also due to the non-muslim "jizya" tax. So Ottoman (think Muslim) genetic contribution (balkan, anatolian,levantine, magreb etc.) was mostly within the muslim population. Your Jewish component ultimate origin is likely from the same source (pre-arab Levantine)

It's just what it 'looks like' compared to an average person from that population group sampled. If there is no Cyprus as a reference population the approximation will be very inaccurate. Jewish and Cypriot DNA happen to be very similar. The original settles to Cyprus were from the Levant.
