This is the first black metal album I listened from front to back. Those keys and that chord progression in Cosmic Keys To My Creations & Time confused and amazed me so much at the time. Like how could music be grim and menacing yet so beautiful and grand at the same time? This album is what woke my new found hunger for extreme metal. I'm more of an Anthems kind of guy, but I enjoy all of their work. Ihsahn is such a peculiar songwriter, so underrated. And totally agree on the use of keyboards, how sometimes they sound even more menacing and twisted than the guitars yet they blend perfectly. (Empty comes to mind).

I love this album and Emperor. I only started listening to black metal in 2005 in high school with yahoo music and MySpace and Sirius satellite radio. I heard Ian Christe play this album. It was amazing to me. I also started to find metal cds at Hot Topic and places where you could buy cds like Hastings and FYE started to carry metal cds. One album that I particularly loved as soon as I bought it was Darkthrone’s Goatlord. That album with the cover of a head of a goat fascinated me.

Finally remembered to dig back and find this video after you mentioned it when we streamed with Marty. Great discussion of this album! 'Nightside' was one of the first Norwegian black metal albums I bought in late '95 or early '96. It has such a grandeur to it while retaining a real darkened soul, a combination that relatively few BM bands ever managed to nail down.

It was super cool to hear someone's take on this album that was actually present when this album was dropped 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾. It gives a perspective on the legacy of this album that I think a lot of people (not everyone!) my age don't realize. I only heard this album 5 years ago, but I still remember the night. This album and Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger changed my life! I had just started getting into Metal and I needed heavier, darker, and more extreme! My search would eventually lead me to Death Metal which would eventually lead me deeper into the abyss of Black Metal. 15 years later I still fuck with Black Metal but I still listen to this album on the regular as well. This album is incredible, riff after riff, and those keyboards! hell yeah! The keyboards made me feel like I was living in that album cover hahaha.
@fogskiss31374 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you here. Things just weren't like they are now in the 90's and no band at that time had any records that sounded like this. This album is just so dense in that ice cold atmosphere, and the riffs are really well composed, as well as the songs. I remember the first time I heard cosmic keys and I was sincerely impressed. I think this and setherial - Nord are two of the greatest black metal albums when you're speaking on atmosphere, although I'd still have to say that my favorite riff and song composition would go to Sacramentum - far away from the sun, blut aus nords memoria vetusta albums and vinterlands album welcome my last chapter

I love the synthesizers on this album. I do think that burzum started this trend but in burzum's music it seams to blend with therest of the instrumentation in a really beautiful way. Emperor however almost uses the keys as a juxtaposition to the mind blowing speed and aggression they display on this album.

In The Nightside Eclipse was one of the first black metal albums I heard in the 90s along with Transylvanian Hunger, Cruelty And The Beast and Moonspell's Wolfheart. You're 100 percent right. Back then even death metal fans didn't understand the black metal sound and it was as far from mainstream as possible. My favorite Emperor album is still Anthems and I don't understand the lack of love it gets from younger black metal nerds.

Ah, this reminds me of college days, when I was (rough)-housing with one of my best mates - who only had one major flaw: he was a Punk / Grindcore kid, who considered everything Black Metal the reincarnation of Hitler-in-persona (and who would regularly invite Seth Putnam from Anal Cunt over, so that this asshat could steal our booze, dope and everything else that came into the vicinity of his greedy fingers - at least until I knocked his lights out on Beacon Hill, but that's another story). Old codger's story cut short: it didn't take that mate all that long to get over his "Black Metal phobia" - not after making him listen to ItNE on a pretty constant basis. After that he was put on a steady diet of Mayhem, Darkthrone and all the other goodies in the collection... and the rest can be imagined... \m/ ... only felt slightly sorry for our third roommate, who was a unrepentant Phish-fan... :-)

It's the most terrifying deathy noise doom Ive ever heard. Also a band called Endon. Darkthrone, early Dimmu Borgir and only a few others is a few of the only black metal bands ill listen too. They atmosphere is great in black metal, the raw production usually matches the guitar tones in most cases. The distortion, the slow builds ups. The only thing I can't stand for the most part is overly recycled themes, subjects. Bands keeping the same topics 95% of the albums (Satan, i get it. Jesus molested there emotionally weak ass selves.) The singing after an extended time grates on me. I can only listen black metal an album at a time, same with Death metal.
