I remember my parents only having two C90 mix-tapes in their car with songs taped from the radio. Both weird mixes of bad german new wave, french chansons, novelty songs and hits from the 60ties.

I remember my mom playing a lot of Mary J. Blige, Earth Wind & Fire, Jackson 5, Boyz II Men, Dru Hill, D'Angelo, R. Kelly (sigh), SWV, DeBarge, Stevie Wonder, Brandy, Tamia, and TLC as far as RnB-ish stuff. Ludacris, 50 cent, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, The College Dropout, Be - Common, Blackstar, The Documentary, TI, a lot of Missy Elliot, and whatever was on the radio at the time for hip-hop. Anything else was Eric Clapton, Norah Jones, Nirvana, James Taylor, Micheal Buble, Queen, Corinne Bailey Rae and John Mayer. For my dad all I remember was The Police, Stevie Ray Vaughn and a shit load of compilation albums

My Dad had a huge taste and listened to whatever he enjoyed. He had Michael Jackson’s Bad and Prince’s Purple Rain to stuff like Cinderella, Loudness, Spice 1, Too $hort and some reggae tapes and new wave stuff as well. I always remember he played the cassette single of It Takes Two by Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock along with Jump Around by House of Pain.

I grew up with a lot of soft rock radio, 80s standards and country dudes who were getting big in the early 90s like Alan Jackson and Garth Brooks. My parents had more of a “play the singles” mentality, so I don’t have a lot of full album memories, but there are a lot of singles they liked I probably know all the words to. A lot of my music tastes I kind of developed on my own, I didn’t really have a guide persay, but having the previously mentioned exposure to country did open the doors for me to get into the genre proper today, so I’ll count that as elders giving me a taste of the genre.

Great question. My dad introduced me to Funkadelic. Still one of my favorite bands of all time. He has such a diverse taste in music. He was a big influence on me as far as being open to everything. More recently, though, I've been introducing him to artists I enjoy. Unfortunately, neither Fleet Foxes or King Gizzard stuck with him, but he loves Kid Cudi ever since I played Man on the Moon for him back around 2008-2009..

For me I grew up off mostly white Metal & Rock bands. My dad's favorite was Dio, ACDC, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Ect. And my mom's favorites were Journey, The Police, Steve Miller, softer Rock like that and a tad bit of Metal, but also Michael Jackson, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Ect. This was a dope video Myke, hope to see more soon!

I remember as a kid my mom and my step-dad were listening to a lot of Bruce Springsteen, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Dire Straits in the car. Most of it never really resonate with me in the sense that I still listen to it on my own, but I do have fond memories of it, and every time I hear songs like Down on the Corner and Coat of Many Colours I think of my parents.

This is a great topic... My parents and I don't really have a whole lot of music crossover. There are certainly albums that I think are okay and fine that I can recall hearing a lot as a kid, but I don't know if there's anything that I necessarily come back to. The closest I would say is when Fleetwood Mac's "The Dance" show came out, I watched that with my mom (on TV). She was a fan, and I had never really knowingly listened to the band before. I ended up really liking the show/songs. At some point she bought a CD of the performance, that at a later point, I borrowed from her for like 5 years (like an asshole son). Eventually, I bought my own copy and gave hers back. It's one of the few live albums I actually like, and has actually made it hard to listen to some of studio versions of the songs. Anyway, I'm rambling now...... Thanks!

When I was 10-11 "Darling Nikki" was my jam! The kid next and I would rewind and play that track over and over whenever there were no grown ups around. Give that Millie Jackson record a revisit. She's fuckin' awesome and not enough people remember her. I had that Whitesnake tape too. Even then I thought it was way too polished but Vai rips it up on that one.

Not albums but decades. Late 50's and 60's. I am 32 now and when I was born my Dad was 37 so he was born in 47. Until I heard Nimrod the only music I really listened to was 50s and 60's music. Still listen to it today.

I listened to my dads classic rock tapes Rush, Boston, etc. Was a big reason why I'm so into music now and still collect tapes. But I haven't really revisited that stuff. I am delving into Blue Oyster Cults discography currently and I'm fascinated by them.

My dad was never super into music, but my mom would always play stuff like the Beatles, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Queen, 80s pop hits, and show tunes. We spent hours on road trips listening to the soundtrack to Cats and Camelot. Apparently mom was a huge fan of Creed when they were super popular, but I don't remember ever listening to them as a kid.

my parents are probably around Myke's age, so my mum was into The Cure and Cocteau Twins, Prince too, Sabbath... on my dad's end you got a whole lotta folk music haha. he also put me onto Radiohead and Bob Marley, plus The Orb, so respect to him

I remember my dad playing a lot of Tool, A Perfect Circle, and System Of A Down when I was younger. We'd ride around the neighborhood or go to the dump and he'd throw on Toxicity, Lateralus, or Mer De Noms. I still really enjoy these bands and especially those albums (Mer De Noms to a lesser extent). From my mom I got a lot of my early hip hop introductions like Outkast, Busta Rhymes, and some one hit wonder dance anthems. Still really enjoy Busta and Outkast but the dance stuff I was never really into as a kid or now.

okay, that is really relatable to me right now at home. Dad used to be a DJ for parties and had a bunch of different music. Now that my parents have been religious for a good decade they listen to gospel or maybe a sermon often. Of course I'm old enough to listen to whatever I choose but the 90s west coast rap and some classic rock shaped part of what I listen to still. For example led zepplin's greatest hits vol 1 I've heard so many times during road trips.
@supak1085 жыл бұрын
Mine mainly come from my Dad who was largely into "classic rock." He introduced me to some great shit like Sabbath and Pink Floyd, but what I remember the most was when I was like 11 or 12 and I got really into Nirvana. It was one of the first bands I got into that my dad really appreciated. It was nice to see him appreciate something that I thought was really awesome. Then years later he would randomly bring up bands like gang of four and I would be like "what the fuck?" I really don't know how that slipped in there with the grateful dead and led zeppelin lol but gang of four are the shit so it was pretty cool.

I literally got nothing from my parents musically. When I was very young, the retro pop channel radio would be in the morning, or while taking road trips, and my mom listened to shitty eurodance (that to this day remains my least favorite genre along with hair metal), but aside from that, and Christmas music around the holidays, that's it, my parents were as far from being music fans as possible. Shit, it was not until the age of 12 where I first learned what albums were. I always cite videogames as my primary influencer as a kid. My introduction to alternative metal, grunge and hardcore/gangsta rap was GTA San Andreas, to punk, it was Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX, to jazz (specifically gypsy jazz), it was Mafia, to chiptune and bleep-bloopy electronic music, it was all the DOS videogames, to ambient music, it was fantasy- or history-oriented strategy games. As a kid, I never really listened to these actively, I just took them as pleasant background noise, but when I started taking an interest in music, these were the genres I started returning to, to hear what those really were. (ps.: about the WDYWK questions... I asked a question waaay back then about your history as a visual artist. Was it a shitty question, or you just don't feel like talking about, or did the mail got lost? I'm not gonna be offended, if you say it was a shit question, I'm just curious if we'll ever get to hear you talk about that stuff.)

Damn, whenever I hear about a time where everyone listened strictly to physical cassettes, CD's, LP's, idk why but it seems like it was such a peaceful time. I feel like everyone appreciates the music they had, and really really loved it, because it was all they had. With streaming, while there is music I have an extreme fondness for, it all feels way too accessible and dispensable. Not sure if that makes sense, haha.
@alejandroramirez44705 жыл бұрын
yeah, it does. What happens when distribution deals end? Then they won't be on streaming or download sites. Also sucks for albums that don't get re-issued/remastered.

My dad used to play Nirvana, and 90's rock on the car. R.E.M. and Pearl Jam, and also Bon Jovi, a lot of Bon Jovi an U2. But, my uncle and my aunt were the ones that showed me the way. My uncle let me listen to his entire cd library, and it was pretty based. Early 2000's nu metal, and the entire Metallica discography, Marilyn Manson as well. From there I checked other albums by myself, like Manson would lead me to NIN (my favorite band), and Metallica to Slayer. He also had a lot of Cypress Hill, but I wasn't that fond of hip-hop back when I was 15, so, I never got to check it. And my Aunt was really into Latin Rock (we're Mexicans), and I still love me some Panteón Rococo, Maldita Vecindad, and Café Tacvba. My mom was also a huge fan of Mijares and Luis Miguel, and shit, those artist are stil nostalgic to me. Same goes for Miguel Bosé. I got into heavier stuff by myself, but that's a lot of things my elders showed me. Also, everybody was a fan of Hombres G, and Molotov.

I remember back in the late 90s my dad was crazy about Geggy Tah, a weird jazzy, alternative rock band. Their albums Sacred Cow and Into The Oh are damn gorgeous. Fun fact the leader of the band was a super young Greg Kurstin. Also the horror on Myke's face at 2:44 when he says "constantly" is hilarious. 😂

Got really excited when I saw this video pop up, cause I never really think about it. It's interesting to see how you got your tastes considering your elder's. I relate to you entirely when you said your dad accidentally got you into heavy guitar music. My father and mother are Dead heads who met at a Grateful Dead show, so you could guess their tastes. My father is a guitar player and likes a lot of Americana, 60s-70s rock, blues, folk, jazz, and funk. It took me a while to like some of the stuff cause mostly what'd I'd hear was the Grateful Dead all the time which I hated (still kinda do lol). There's certain shit though I'd hear on like The Clash and The Doors that'd he'd play that I really liked. Also, for some fucking reason, my dad was cool enough to be into the Gorillaz when Demon Dayz came out and I loved that shit. A culmination of all that, I figured out I liked hip hop and heavy guitar music. For instance lately I've Now been listening to artists like Wire, The Swans, This Heat, Throbbing Gristle, Mission of Burma, and Clipse, artists he couldn't stand to listen to, but probably stemmed from The Doors first album, London Calling, and the first two Gorillaz albums. There's some middle ground that we both are Into though like the Talking Heads, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, and The Beatles. We even went to a Velvet Undergound exhibit in NYC recently. Shit though like Television, The Meat Puppets, and even some Sonic youth , I can't help but think I wouldn't like as much if Spacey Grateful Dead Jams weren't ingrained to my head. Casey jones is a good song though

My parents usually played a lot of oldies or classic rock, 80s rock, 80s pop, 90s grunge, and lots of other stuff. Later on, they started to play some Christian music too. From what they played, I got into the classic rock, 80s rock, grunge, and other stuff. My parents were not the biggest fans of rap but I got into rap when someone showed me a Eminem song in 6th grade lol. Before 6th grade, all I listened to mostly Nu Metal and maybe some other stuff. I am glad that my music taste eventually spread out a lot more once 6th or 7th grade came around lol.
