When you said "yeah, bring your kids to the cockpit" It reminded me that day when I was like- 10 maybe... And I really wanted to see how it was into the cockpit, how everything works, etc... And then my mom told me she was gonna ask if it was possible for me to go see in the cockpit but she told me that she wasn't sure that they would say yes because of all the accidents that happened with people just entering the cockpit and making the plane crash... So she asked to one of the women that was working on the plane if it was possible at least before the flight starts and she said that she was going to ask to the pilot. So when she came back she said that they said yes but that the pilot wasn't here yet so there was only the co-pilot. So I went to the cockpit, started to talk with the co-pilot, he was kinda impressed I knew some things that usually 10 years old kids (or even adults) don't know (I knew these things because my father worked in an airport and he had friends working on air planes (like fixing them, etc...) So then I came back to my place beside my mother and then there's the pilot, the co-pilot, and the woman that works on the plane that just went OUT of the cockpit and called us- the pilot said: "Excuse me, take your stuff and come please." And my mother was like- "What did you do?!" So we took our bags and all the things and then they just- closed the curtains and they said to follow them to the cockpit- so we ended up doing ALL THE FLIGHT in the cockpit with them! It was a really funny and cool experience! Fun fact number one: we had to shut up everytime they were communicating with the airport Fun fact number two: there were old candies on the floor of the cockpit- And finally- fun fact number three-: when they called us, all the people were looking at us like- wth..... Good luck to read all of this!

I didn't realize the autopilot could land the plane...interesting. I like hearing from the pilot, they always sound so calm and relaxed, might be helpful for travelers that are nervous about flying. I used to be somewhat nervous about flying but as I've gotten older it doesn't bother me at all now.
@mikoto7693
@mikoto7693 2 жыл бұрын
Oh, yeah if the airport is ILS then yeah the autopilot can be programmed to land itself with very little input from the human. From what I’ve seen the real problem would be getting the radio programmed and set to the correct or emergency frequency.
@69ChevyGarage
@69ChevyGarage Жыл бұрын
You still have to dial in the speeds per flaps, and make sure the ILS is completely set up, disengage the auto-throttle just before flare and the person on the controls must apply the thrust reversers upon touchdown. This is all it takes to bring an airliner safely onto a runway, it must be equipped with an Instrument landing system (ILS).

I used to fly British Airways on a 747-200 (2 pilots plus flight engineer) across the pond quite frequently back in the late 80's and early 90's. I usually asked the flight attendants if I could visit the cockpit in flight as I am a private/instrument pilot. I was usually granted permission and literally spent hours in the cockpit with the pilots. On one flight I was there for almost 2 hours chatting as we flew over Greenland, so serene and pretty. They finally threw me out when we had to begin our descent. I also managed to fly the jump seat on a Lufthansa ATR 72 from Munich to Milan. We flew over the Alps as the sun was going down. That was spectacular. Just discovered your channel, I love it. Thanks for sharing.

When I worked at a dealership in Cannon Falls, MN, we had a customer who was a pilot for Northwest that would sit on his tailgate and drink beer while we worked on his truck. I always teased him that if I ever heard his south accent over the intercom before a flight that I would have to get off the plane. He said he couldn't drink before work, so he made up for it on his down time. I'm pretty sure drinking in our shop was against our rules, too...

I love your videos! I just found your channel last month and I’ve been watching your vlogs in reverse. Thank you for answering all of these questions. My husband is an ER doc. Occasionally when we’ve flown, the FA will ask on the overhead will ask if there’s a doctor on board. It’s never been anything life-threatening. But he feels like he can’t offer much help since he doesn’t have tools/meds etc. He usually just sits with the person and offers reassurance. The flight crew has always been very appreciative. Interesting about the break times that you get. My husband’s ED has switched to mostly 12h shifts. It’s too taxing. They need to offer ER docs breaks too. Not sure why they don’t?

I'm a retired clinical social worker. I worked on psych units for years, visiting the ED many times. My friend/colleague, a psychiatrist, was on a ferry trip on the Puget Sound when the call came over the loudspeakers: "will any doctor on board report to..." After two or three calls, his wife told him that he'd better go see if he could help. It was a guy who'd had a heart attack. But my friend wasn't the only medical professional who answered the call. A dentist happened to be on board as well! Out of the hearing range of the patient, my friend told the dentist, "Well, I could ask him how he feels about having a heart attack," to which the dentist replied, "I could look at his teeth while he is lying there!" As it turns out, the heart attack was a mild one, and the patient survived, but they did sit with him for the remainder of the trip and reassure him that all would be okay.

In the topic of ratings... accelerated programs you can get from zero to MEI in 6 Months. With PPL in 1 Month, Instruments in 3 weeks, commercial 2 weeks, CFI 1 week, CFIII 1 week, Multi 2 weeks, and MEI 1 Week and the rest is building time for the next rating. So no years if you are committed to get your ratings.

Just started watching you today. Do you have to pay for the hotel room when you're on layovers? Or does the airline pay for that? Or do they include an amount in your salary?
@danaeads919
@danaeads919 2 жыл бұрын
He did a video about that subject. The airline pays when he flies out, has to stay overnight and then fly back to his base. He's based in Newark but actually lives in Minnesota. When he stays in Newark, waiting for his next flight, he has to pay for the hotel. Flight crews will either stay in hotels in their base city (hub) or they will rent a bed in a "crash pad" which is an apartment with as many beds (or bunk beds) as possible in order to keep costs down.
@brianhurt3801
@brianhurt3801 2 жыл бұрын
Well that's not fair, auto pilot landing ,giving the opportunity for a passenger to land a plane with no experience,it certainly has to be a better crash I'm sure the airline wouldn't mind passenger landing plane it would sure take the blame off of them

I am considering a career change and have always wanted to become a airline pilot. However, I am concerned this late in my life if I will still be able to continue my current standard of living. I’ve recently reached out to a local aviation school that is affiliated with the United Aviate program and I am a veteran (AirForce Maintenance non-pilot). What concerns me particularly is will my starting pay as a ATP match or better my current salary requirements. Would be helpful if you could explain in a next video what is an average salary (starting to senior level timeframes outlook) and lifestyle expectations/change and life experience/outlook could be like. I currently have a corporate remote job (home) and I am mid 40’s. You mention 65 is max age these days. That leaves me < 20 yrs to go. I just don’t want to have to start all over again as low man on totem pole for pay if salary is not well for beginners, I may have to pass on this idea if pay expectations are not a match at ATP beginner stages/levels.

when flying a longer flight, is there a point where the pilots get to kind of relax and enjoy the fact that you are flying? Kind of like during a long car ride, there are points where you can relax a bit and enjoy the scenery. Do pilots ever get that? Would suck to have to keep on high alert and miss some of those views. Also, in n emergency could the auto-pilot land the plane?
@keithfreitas2983

There is a requirement for a extra pilot on long international flights. It depends. Most flights accross the US have 2 but end after 8 hours for crew rest of 8 hours. Over 8 requires longer rest. DurIng the flight there are times that one pilot can relax, taking turns checking instrument and not talking to ATC.

Sometimes it can feel like that but I guarantee mountain wave turbulence has never taken any plane down. It’s super uncomfortable but the plane isn’t in any danger. The most dangerous part of turbulence is if the flight attendants are in the aisle with carts and the carts go flying.

I have been to vegas many times in the last couple of years and they have always been smooth. This last time we left the runway, maybe 3 or 4 minutes in the air, the plane shook violently, like king kong grabbed it and shook it back and forth, it was terrifying.

If you were flying a plane and the wind broke off what would be the first thing that you would think about your PreFlight inspection or a prayer to God or would you notify the passengers not to look out the window of the plane with the missing wing

Since the plane would be dropping like a stone, it really wouldn't matter what he thought about or told the passengers. I haven't heard of a wing suddenly reattaching itself to a falling plane, so it may be a little late to offer up a prayer.

Very few airlines require a 4 year degree anymore. You can get hired almost anywhere right now if you have the time and a clean record.

You don’t want to disadvantage yourself without one. The finalists for the job will have one… and if they have more hours… they win the job. Don’t give an employer an excuse NOT to hire you. And they will use lack of a degree as an obvious one *all the time*.

I had a buddy pass and trying to use it ended up being one of the most expensive trip I’ve ever had. Since, I couldn’t get space a, I ended up paying for my entire trip at the airports.
