All those who died for liberty have heard the eagle scream All those who died for liberty have died but for a dream Oh then rise, rise, rise, dark horse on the wind For in no nation on earth more broken dreams you'll find The flames leapt high, reached to the sky 'til they seared a nation's soul In the ashes of our broken dreams we've lost sight of our goal Oh then rise, rise, rise, dark horse on the wind And help our hearts seek Róisín, our soul again to find Now charlatans wear dead men's shoes, aye and rattle dead men's bones 'Ere the dust has settled on their tombs, they've sold the very stones Oh then rise, rise, rise, dark horse on the wind For in no nation on the earth more Pharisees you'll find In grief and hate our motherland her dragon's teeth has sown Now the warriors spring from the earth to maim and kill their own Oh then rise, rise, rise, dark horse on the wind For the one-eyed Balor still reigns king in our nation of the blind

Recently discovered Radie and Lankum/Lynched about a month ago. First singer and group I've truly fallen in love with in a while. Their work and the work of others in the Dublin folk scene of the last few years (like Lisa O'Neill and Ye Vagabonds) have truly created/resurrected a style that speaks deeply into my soul. (Must admit, do have a bit of a crush on Radie too.) :)

A true angel's voice. Dark and powerful, a fey force to wrest souls from the gloom and have them dance. Nothing like celtic dirges to bring generations of pain and suffering to the light and make it a beautiful part of us now. Just f-----g amazing Radie.

It took some scrolling to find a comment that mentioned this being "terrifying", but I very much agree. You could say its sad or mornful too, but that wouldnt be enough. Theres an element of the supernatural in how this sounds, and its not the Disney kind. Im well aware of what the subject of the lyrics is, but when put with this harmonium and way of singing, its almost as if its a communication from the next world, from victims of violent cirumstances beyond their control, hysterically wrathful in their grief, eternally restless in their abject lament. The only thing that comes close for me is the metal band Bell Witch, who deal a lot with ghosts in their lyrics. Their music doesnt generally have the same sense of WRATH as this does though, its more concerned with the sadness and sombreness involved in loss. Ive never heard anything like this. Nothing has instilled in me the feeling of being on the recieving end of a ghostly victim's otherworldly lament the way this has. Easily one of the most powerful things I have ever heard, full stop.
@slydoll7877
@slydoll7877 Жыл бұрын
@@willterhart6767 I completely agree about the supernatural aspect. I always felt that Stairway to Heaven had utilized some otherworldly power too. Radie seems to have a gift for tapping into long gone thoughts and feelings doesn't she?

Simply otherworldly. Haunting and stirring to the soul. Beautiful and very ancient sounding the way Radie Peat sings and harmonizes to that single note. There are similar traditional ancient styles of singing around a single note that can be found across the world (India, Chechnya, Bulgaria, Norway, Indonesia, etc...) which I find fascinating as both a musician and an anthropologist. As always Myles, your film and audio work of you and your team is expertly done.

Wigon! Thank you. These other countries you speak of.. it would be a DREAM to chase this sound across the globe. That is my ultimate ambition. I just don't know how to make it happen.
@wigon
@wigon 6 жыл бұрын
If anyone can make this dream happen, you can. All you need to do is hook up with like-minded ethno-musicologists (a sub-set of anthropology) and let the grants come flowing in. They do the grant writing and provide the cultural expertise, while you provide the technical know-how, production experience, and equipment. It's definitely possible and the quality of you and your team's work, in my opinion, is beyond reproach. It is as good as any pro-level videotography and sound work that I've seen. You have a knack for catching intimate moments of genuine human emotion that I think will translate well in many different cultures during your travels. To start off with, I would recommend that you perhaps team up with America's NPR (National Public Radio) if the BBC or some other similar media organization doesn't sponsor you. Trust me, you and your team absolutely have the talent and expertise to move on to the next level. It's just a matter of marketing yourselves to the right sponsors who can make it happen without having to compromise your vision.

I always think of Radie as the 'anti-Celtic Women'. There's a rawness and a realness here- a window into the soul of the Irish people- that the sickly, sentimental, and slick 'traditional' product packaged up for the Irish/American market will never capture. Strictly Roots:-)

Thank you. I know what you mean. I'm American (1/2 Irish descent). I get tired of that cutsey "Irish" stuff too. A few pretty young women all dolled up in some fancy evening gowns of different colors; there's a blonde, a readhead, a brunette, and one with black hair. Yeah ! One of each..............They remind me more of Disney princesses. You know, I always liked the sound of Sinead O'Connor as well. That sort of sadness or desperation in her voice. I know she's absolutely bat sh*t crazy and probably horrible to deal with in person, but she still is one of my favorite Irish female VOICES.
