With the introduction of the Retrotink 5X, the entire Retrotink line has become my go-to recommendation whenever people ask me about scalers. The Retrotink 2X was always an easy recommendation because there wasn't anything to worry about as a plug-and-play device. The best thing about the 5X (outside of miraculously fixing the Chrono Cross problem) is that, for all of the power it has, it too remains plug-and-play for most people and for most consoles. Personally, the only reason I still have to keep an OSSC hooked up is that it handles PSP video out for me and can scale it to a much larger size on the screen, so that would be the only feature I could request in an update.

[Try4ce] Yep, the 2X stuff is such an easy recommendation for people who are new to this, especially for N64 fans or people who don't want to deal with mods or pay for the best cables. At the very least they're getting WAY better composite than their TV would show, and no added lag. No matter what future devices may offer, the 5X too will remain an easy recommendation for people who are just looking for the results, which it delivers in spades. I think it's a very very smart product.

I own a 5X and a 2X Multiformat. Mainly I play Tony Hawk Pro Skater (all If them) and Burnout on a PS2. I actually find that the Multiformat produces a smoother, more appealing image. The one exception I’ve found is with Burnout Revenge outputting 480p.

Pulled the trigger on these and it arrived the other day. Even connected with my crappy Amazon composite cables on the SNES it makes a world of difference. Now I'm just waiting on the gComp, and component cables from HD Retrovision for SNES, Wii and Dreamcast to be available! This channel is really great. I had an itch that needing scratching bit wasn't sure what it was until a few months ago when I stumbled on a MLiG video while watching another video.

Just got the Retrotink 5x in. Already had an OSSC. Went to town on it for hours and was up until 1am trying a bunch of games PS1, PS2, and SNES. Love the CRT filters. I wasn't sure if it would be worth it, already owning an OSSC, but I'm loving it. IMO, the killer feature is how well it handles composite video, ease of use, and the amount of CRT filters and post processing effects with the latest updates. Taking a soft, analog composite signal, upscaled 6x to 1440p, then overlaying a super sharp, pixel accurate scanlines with a CRT mask on top of that is *chef's kiss*, IMO. It's fantastic for getting a really convincing old-school CRT look. I may even like it better than super sharp RGB. Cleans up video noise on pre-rendered videos on ps1, ps2 games. Also love how the scanlines and CRT filters scale and correct accurately based on the input signal 240p, 480i, etc. So with scanlines turned on, while playing chrono-cross for instance, going into the menu, the scanlines and CRT filters seamlessly switch to being more dense and pixel accurate to retain the 640x480i detail. Then seamlessly switch back to the fat 240p scanlines when going back out of the menu. All with no signal drop, if using triple buffering. Even without Triple buffer, it's close to perfect, with only a split second audio drop. It's crazy good. I think in some cases, the OSSC can still give a sharper picture, using FirebrandXs profiles. But the Retrotink gets really close with the timing presets. They aren't perfect though and I've had occasional issues and I've had to fallback to the generic 4:3. But the OSSC can be a pain too sometimes. The Motion Adaptive De-interlacing is awesome for PS2 and way better than the OSSC. I'd gotten used to Bob and learned to accept it, but now that I have this, I can't go back to that jitter. Overall super happy with the purchase. Think about selling my Sony PVM, which I've mostly kept for interlaced PS2 games nowadays. The retrotink 5x is very well worth it!

For anyone who might be wondering what's at 11:26 - that's an NES game called Legacy of the Wizard / Dragon Slayer IV: Drasle Family, 14:20 is PC-Engine's Dragon Egg, and 17:40 is Breath of Fire II for SNES, 18:03 is Mega Drive's Magical Taruruuto-kun, 20:48 is SaGa Frontier 2 for Playstation, 21:17 is Valkyrie no Densetsu (I'm assuming running from Playstation's Namco Museum, but could also be PC-Engine), 24:06 is Playstation 2's Odin Sphere! I swear, everytime I go into one of these, I end up going down a million gaming rabbit holes...

Wow, the optimised sampling mode looks incredible but on the OSSC that sounds like an incredible pain, I definitely wouldn’t bother with that. With the RetroTink 5x, maybe I would. But I’d probably also stick with the generic 4:3 because it just works on everything and looks great, you’re totally right that unless super zoomed in the difference is basically unnoticeable, I know it would be for me as my vision is terrible.

@@MrDayday4641 it’s definitely 0 lag, or as close to it as possible. RetroRGB’s videos on the Tink show that frame lock mode introduces a fraction of a frame of lag, and buffered mode wavers between .2 and 1.2 frames.

I've been in the market for a new scaler ever since I picked up a CRT monitor that has BNC connections and supports up to 2048x1536 resolution. As someone who is not an expert, but enjoy retrogames and like to occasionally play when time permits, this is the video that I was waiting for on the 5x. I missed the pre-order window but now I can safely order one knowing that I can just plug and play my unmodified consoles and enjoy some clean pixels on my HDTV without having to spend over 200 USD on modding my consoles to use a 300 USD scaler or RGB modding to then buy expensive good quality RGB cables.

I absolutely love my ossc but the Retrotink 5x's deinterlacing modes and the presence of s-video are the reasons I'll probably be wanting that over my ossc. The exclusion of vga is a bit of a letdown for Dreamcast owners like me, but the already mentioned scart solution and hopefully future component solutions will make this a non-issue. It also makes it so that I don't need the Koryuu transcoder anymore. The 5x would basically be replacing three different devices in my setup LOL.

Just picked one up off eBay. I can’t wait to test this out on my OG Xbox with Official Component Cables. Mostly to be used on Crazy Taxi 3 as I play that a lot on the channel. @@wrena79 The only benefit of value to me for this over my Framemeister is the 240p to 480p switching (which makes some games unplayable for me with the framemeister, such as Killer Instinct Gold on N64) - I’m gonna stick with mine though and not bother with this as the lack of HDMI inputs will prevent my Dreamcast and Gamecube from being connected using HDMI; the Framemeister does have some let-downs IMO but it still does a great job on the whole

[Try4ce] Yeah that's true. It's very easy to get optimal results since the menu and options are pretty simple overall. But then again, I use the OSSC in the most barebones basic way, as I explained. If you use the OSSC with Generic 4:3 sampling, all you do is flick it on, choose your input, and play the game.

Another INCREDIBLE video. The level and depth and information packed in this episode is not lost on me. WOW! Very well done and thank you! I want better picture quality out of my N64 but I don't want to mod my system. I have a generic upscaler now but I was put off with devices like the EON Super 64 because of the way they handled resolution switching in games like Resident Evil 2 and Killer Instinct Gold on the N64. Again, this would only be for my N64 so I was already leaning towards the RetroTINK 2X-Mini but would the 5X-Pro be better? BTW RetroTINK really filled a need with their product line because everything is sold out. Thanks again for the video!

[Try4ce] RE2 on N64 would probably still be problematic with the 2X Mini, but it would be a shame to spend so much more on a 5X if you'd only be using the N64 with it! I believe RE2 is fine if you aren't using an expansion pak though. By the way, I believe they probably have stock of their other products, but they're just not taking orders at the moment because they're overwhelmed shipping out all of the 5X orders! They'll probably start selling the 2Xes again soon enough.

I just bought one. I'll be using it for ps2, ps1 via ps2, wii, and gamecube via wii on a small samsung LED. Can't wait!
