I adore Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away, so here's part three of the world's most indepth analysis on the film. In this video essay, I explore every moment of Studio Ghibli's masterpiece in chronological o rder. This episode focuses on the sequence that takes Sen through to the pig pens and into the garden with Haku, where she finally cries, and then the sequence where she helps clean up the stink/river spirit. This one feels a little more either simplistic or refined than the last two videos, I reckon. I suppose the garden scene with Haku is quite simple and that's part of why it's so incredibly powerful.
My Little Thought Tree is my channel for drawing out the deeper meaning and emotion in film, TV, and the world at large through relaxed, analytical video essays. It is very interesting that part of the river spirit's pollution was gold, implying that it was polluted partly with greed, and in turn its spiritual cleansing of this pollution further pollutes the bathhouse workers.

Maybe this is just me, but I always thought when Chihiro walks past No-Face on the bridge and lowers her head that she greets him. So I always thought that he follows her because she is the first one to actually notice him.

Tl;dr No Face is lonely and his journey is about making meaningful connections. I feel that No Face, as you mentioned, is a spirit desperate for connections to others. In the early part of the film, he's largely overlooked, or else deliberately ignored in the case of Sen crossing the bridge. He hungers for friendship, or perhaps nurturing would be a better term. To that end, No Face tries to gain that attention through materialistic means. Gold, bath tokens, anything that will please the other person/spirit and thus more likely to have the attention he seeks. However, just like his mask, these bonds are surface level: they workers No Face bribes and later consumes, are lavishing him out of their own selfish wants. They don't really care about No Face, not in any meaningful sense, and so No Face's hunger is still not satisfied. It's when he spends time with Sen after being led out of the bathhouse, and connecting with Yubaba's sister, and soon No Face finds that he doesn't need to bribe others to notice him. His 'hunger', really just his loneliness, has been fulfilled by the bonds he makes.

So No Face is like a spiritual version of a narcissist, trying to fill the howling void with praise and material goods to the point where they take out several people and almost destroy the whole bathhouse? Why does that story sound so familiar...?
@yuichitwong9629
@yuichitwong9629 3 жыл бұрын
@@punkinholler I wouldn't say so. A narcissist craves attention to confirm their own delusions about themselves. No Face has none of that. When faced with Zeniba later in the film he instantly becomes honest and diligent. A narcissist wouldn't be capable of such a change. I think he really is just a childlike character who mindlessly follows what the others around him do

the word that came to my head during the scene where Sen cries is "nourishment". Literally because she's eating to regain her strength, emotionally because she is having a cleansing cry, and socially because Haku puts his arm around her.

Im so happy you pointed out the very minor detail in the scene where Haku gives Chihiro the onigiri, that haku may not have actually cast a spell on them. I remember thinking "Oh he could have lied knowing the belief of a spell is enough to give her strength at this point" a solid 10 years after watching this movie for the first time.

Disclaimer: also a Westerner. I don't think it's a coincidence they made Chihiro/Sen, a human, clean the river spirit her kind has polluted beyond recognition; It wasn't just her trial as an individual - it was the spirit world's trial of humanity and whether the young can atone for their parents' sins - symbolized by her own parents who's greed turned them into pigs. I think this is the turning point not only of the bathhouse's treatment of Sen, but also of how they view humans as a whole. If she hadn't cleansed that river, they wouldn't have just accepted her correct answer in the final trial.

Here is a theory of mine about No face on the bridge and why Zen can’t see him as soon as she crosses: Inside the bathhouse, she‘s been stripped off her Identity by it taking away her clothes, her name, her emotions and her childishness. (No face) All these things she gets back once she meets with Haku on the other end of the bridge, which I think is why Haku appeared in the moment she couldn’t see No face anymore. When she was with haku, she had a face in the way she got back the many things making her individual. Even as the viewer, at least from my experience, for this scene you only then actively remember that she has parents and that she is in fact just a overwhelmed child. You quickly forget that in the bathhouse scenes.

Yet, later on, she continues to be able to see him even after she gained her whole self back. Maybe Noface is what Chihiro would have become without Haku. Once a human he is now trapped between what may be left of him after disappearing as a human within the Spirit world and him becomming a spirit. Thus he is either ignored or not seen by the other Spirits and servants of Ubaba and it would put more context to his ability to disappear and is affection towards Chihiro, besides her noticing him and showing kindness in opposite to everyone else ignoring or missing him entirely (until later on). He, once human, is now naturally attracted by Chihiro, as she resembles what he´d lost. He is trapped both mentally and physically between wolrds, he can neither go back into the World of the living nor fully cross the bridge to the Onsen. He truly has no face, no identity until Chihiro gives him unknowingly enought parts of personality and identity to cross further and, later, enter the Onsen. It was Chihiro who brought him some identity and showed pure kindness, whithout greed or intention behind it, thus he follows her later on and tries to thank her in a mannor he observed from the others.

As interesting as your theory is about the frogs is, Miyazaki has said that Lin is meant to be a ferret spirit and many of the female workers are meant to be slugs. Kamaji is clearly meant to be a spider. If anything I think maybe your idea might work better in reverse; the nature spirits take on more human forms in order to better work in an industrial environment. The comment about "frog labour" is probably just some discrimination on Lin's part.
@peccantis

Absolutely. The workers with more human countenances are probably more powerful and/or older. There are many stories where a mischievous or malevolent spirit fails in fooling humans because their human form is somehow lacking.

I also got the feeling that the "frog work" comment is that the frogs generally get the menial jobs, like mucking out a used tub, etc.

I think its like how manual/physical labor is usually men’s work, so the rough job of scrubbing the big tub is for men, and less harsh work like cleaning the floor is what the women do. Maybe frog spirits are physically stronger so they are supposed to do harder physical labor. I’ve seen bbq restaurants in japan where only the guys are tasked to scrub the grill cuz it’s too tiring and time consuming/overall just too much for the girls to do.

i think it would make sense if “frogs work” meant something more like new workers get the worst jobs because it seems like the workers that are “higher up” like the foreman and a few others are more human-like and the lower workers that just clean/cook are very frog-like so rin (who looks very human=high seniority) saying “that’s frogs work” seems more like “i’m too high up to be doing that job. that’s for workers at the bottom”

something I noticed was that No-Face looks Significantly older at the beginning of the movie. Like, he looks elderly. His neck doesn't jut out like it should, and he looks super stiff. Even his ask like thing looks as if it has wrinkles and is too tired to really move it. But as he meets Chihiro/Sen and sees her innocence and youth he pretty quickly morphs back into a more mobil, younger version of himself.

People have probably commented this but: Chihiro saying “Haku’s a dragon?” feels random cause it is. It’s a dub only line. She doesn’t realize the dragon is Haku until later when he’s attacked by the paper demons, and even then she’s not sure herself why she’s made that connection. We find out later of course it’s because he’s the spirit that saved her from his river as a small child.

I think there is significance in Haku putting the spell on the food. It gives her back the strength to be able to progress forward, but it also means that she really is truly alone. She has to rely on herself now. The tears are the last of her childhood slipping away. It's the bittersweet transition from childhood to growing up.

I don't think Haku's practical support is necessarily a bad thing or a character flaw. In tense situations, it's better not to be overwhelmed by emotion. And especially in Asian culture, it's not uncommon to place a lot of respect on personal space. I think what the crying scene was supposed to show is that you can't force a breakthrough. the best thing you can do is be there when it happens.
@scarlettt.s9822
@scarlettt.s9822 3 жыл бұрын
It's not a character flaw however it's generally good to give a mixture of both practical and emotional support when helping someone and Sen helps him become more emotional (or get back his more emotional side after the bathhouse numbs him) while he helps Sen become more brave and independent. They both need each other which is why their relationship is so powerful.

This is in no way supposed to be a critique but I do have something to add to the "he's a dragon" scene. I've recently rewatched Spirited Away (in japanese with subtitles) and when you mentioned that Sen said "he's a dragon" I was confused because I didn't recall anything of the sort. I went back to check and indeed: no "he's a dragon"... I think it's fun to compare different translations and dubs to find stuff like this. When I first saw the movie (also in japanese with subtitles), I didn't realize that Haku was the dragon until Sen subconsciously (at least that's what I took from it) recognizes him while he is chased. So stuff like this can totally change how you experience a movie, and that super cool!

I immediately came to the comments. I’m honestly surprised that the English dubs are so acclaimed, when if every instance I’ve found major tonal differences between the sub and the dub. I was astounded at how much more I loved the film after rewatching the sub. And I think not having added lines of silent moments (bc there’s more than just this instance) really helped.

It's a line I'm not surprised isn't in the original, it sounds like it was put in out of fear the western audience might not understand Having said that, I nevermind differences in dubs to the original. I think any translation, even just subtitles, are always a bit different and there's then an artistry to what a translator may convey to the audience. Sometimes it's not as good, sometimes it adds an interesting layer. The main problem I suppose is you only get the one translation, whereas translated books, you can buy multiple different translations and compare them, and always find something really interesting as a result. I really do think there's an art to a translator that people often overlook

So as someone intimately familiar with Shinto, I'll take up your offer to go more in detail on the importance of the bathhouse and water. The concept of pollution or _kegare_ is central to Shinto belief (in this case literal pollusion, but usually used more symbolically to represent our souls becoming polluted). This can affect the kami/spirits as well as humans, so Shinto combats this with cleansing rituals called _harae_ that often involve water washing the pollution away; one of the most significant rituals, _misogi_, is performed by standing beneath a (often freezing) waterfall. Before entering any Shinto shrine, worshippers must cleanse their hands and mouths with water from the purification font near the entrance. Additionally, onsen/bathhouse culture is hugely important to Japan, both because natural hot springs are purported to have healing qualities and because communal bathing is historically an important bonding experience for Japanese communities. Thus, it makes sense that No Face, a lonely spirit seeking connection and friendship, would end up coming to the bathhouse as you aptly pointed out.

@@mylittlethoughttree Just to add into Tristan's explanation: In Shinto belief running water is a hugely important metaphor. In the same way standing water starts to grow algae and accumulate, so do stagnant souls of humans and spirits become polluted. It's a very literal version of spiritual purification for the river spirit we see in the scene to allow it run freely again.

I think the river spirits response was perfect. It as if an elderly person was congratulating the youngsters for succeeding. I never thought about this scene in as a n action piece, bit it absolutely fits. I think the river spirit knew that this healing ball would help such a kind and gentle person. As opposed to money, he gave her a token of its appreciation that Sen herself would need.

Noface is a Spirit of wanting and desire - he gets power from people around him wanting things, especially form him, wenn he manages to meet their expectations. Their desires give him his form, and he grows in power each time he delivers. The hopeful resolve of Chihiro allows him to cross the bridge; the Greed of the workers transforms him into a greedy Being him self.

Thank you for your analysis of No Face. He's been my favourite character for as long as I can remember (I had never quite understood why) and I don't see him as the representation of greed either; I think he has much more to do with the question of identity and belonging (and also possibly corruptibility). To some of the questions you posed in the video: - I think the reason No Face could only cross the bridge after his interation(s) with Chihiro is that she is literally the first person who acknowledges him and shows him respect and kindness. Nobody else pays him any attention, as if he was invisible or wasn't even there. But Chihiro essentially affirms his existence, acknowledges the space he takes up in the world and thus validates his identity. I largely agree with the reasons you mentioned as to why he keeps following her (about latching on to her as to define his own identity and to fill that void as well as to return her kindness - on that note, I feel like No Face has never really been shown kindness and therefore completely misunderstands how it works; he wants to please Chihiro and becomes increasingly frustrated when it doesn't seem to be working - he's doing everything just the way he learned from the bathhouse workers, so what is he doing wrong?? Also, another aspect of his character that will come up later is the fact that he's terminally lonely; he has no one and belongs nowhere, so he becomes quite understandably obsessed with the only person who acknowledged him and showed him kindness.) - As for the stink/river spirit - the part about the bad smell may have a comical dimension to it, but there is also another layer that comes from Japanese culture and mythology. In Shinto, there is the term "kegare" which means something like "uncleanness" or "(ritual) impurity." It's basically the opposite of "kami" - the Shinto koncept of gods/spirits, that which is "clean" and beautiful. Kegare is everything that repells kami. It's all things connected to death, illness and injury, any bodily fluids or waste, and also for example any foul-smelling things. It's also contagious, meaning that if you touch/come into contact with something that "has" kegare, you also become "unclean." Before entering any sacred ("clean") place, like a shrine or any other place where kami (the spirits) could potentially be present, you must first cleanse yourself. Running water is the most obvious and important means here, it gets rid of kegare. So yes, the significance of water (and running water specifically) is quite obvious here. I don't expect you actually read this far, but in case you did - I can't even express how much I love these videos of yours. Just when I thought it wasn't possible to fall in love with this movie any more... You're making me consider all sorts of new angles and notice new nuances... Thank you and keep up the awsome work!

Looks like it's pretty much consensus that No Face is empty in some way. I'm thinking it's a lack of inner true "face" (honne). It has a mask and it clumsily copies and tries out various actions it sees around itself. Those aspects would be its "public face" (tatemae). It gorges itself, even consuming living people, not due to greed but in a vain attempt to satisfy a deep emptiness. It craves connection, but true connection can never be made if you only have the superficial parts of personhood. It instinctively seeks the place with the most bustling and hustling, but turns out a stay at a secluded quiet little cottage with just a couple people paying it genuine attention was what it actually needed to develop a fledgling inner self.

I always saw no-face as someone who terribly suffers from solitude. Sen is the first and only one who acknowledges and is kind to him. That's why he is obsessed with having a relationship with her, but he doesn't even know what having a relationship means, so he just tries to find ways to keep her close. They don't work with her, but they do work with other characters. Only when he gives up on his idea that the only way to keep people close is to own them, is when he is finally able to have a friendship with chihiro, zeniba, boh and the mosquito

I really love this series, it's super relaxing to listen to and there are so many good theories and notes about color and symbolism. I just can't get enough of this kind of thing lol. Although I will say that I strongly suggest analyzing the Japanese dub rather than the English dub. Or at least do a short separate video on it. It may not look it, but there are tons of differences between the two. Disney changed major plot points, personality traits, and even added uneccesary dialogue! Here are some examples where they changed the dialogue and how it changed the movie. When Haku and Chihiro crash into the boiler room, Chihiro rushes over to Haku. In the English dub she says; "What's wrong with you?" In the Japanese dub she says; "Does it hurt?" In the jdub she already knows what's wrong with him and now she's concerned for him, further strengthening their spiritual connection. In the edub however, the insight the line gives us is that Chihiro just doesn't understand what's happening. And not much else. Here's another difference regarding Haku. When Chihiro runs across the bridge back to the bathhouse, in the edub she turns around and says this; "Haku... he's a dragon?" In the jdub however, I don't think she says anything, or at the very least she says "A dragon." She doesn't recognize Haku as a dragon. Going to the paper bird action scene she's says this in the edub, "It's Haku! He's coming this way!" "Haku don't give up! Over here!" In the moment she looks surprised or has realized something, she gasps realizing he's hurt. This is what is said in the jdub; "It's that dragon I saw. It's coming this way!" Then there is an echo effect over her voice- "Haku! Don't give up! Over here!" At the same realization point right after she says the previous line she says "Haku?...Haku!" The big difference is that her spiritual connection with Haku is what made her call out his name, she didn't just recognize him rght away. And even after that she still doesn't fully know it's him until he transforms back to his "human" form but still im really looking forward to the next part, these are amazing!

Did you guys notice how when Sen first crosses the bridge No face recognizes her presence even though she is holding her breath. The way he notice her kind of tells us that's like the first time he saw someone actually cross the bridge and be able to pass the phase he is in, sort of like an idol or an inspiration that's why he kind of followed her through out the film, for him to find his purpose of existing. The way the film also tells us his journey. From someone who is more like a people pleaser in order to gain peoples likeness and attention (the gold scene) to more like the realization part where he travels (train part) and was able to find peace and find his purpose, or more like find himself and his identity.

46:30 interesting thought! for me this scene demonstrates one side of eastern mentality: we are not friendly to a stranger or even to each other, but when some sh*t is happening right now they unite and move to the purpose with determination

18:45 Also Chihiro never says that line in the original Japanese. Haku being a dragon is supposed to be a mystery until after she feeds him the medicine. Another example of the English dub taking liberties and accidentally breaking the plot.

at 18:50 talking about how ghibli is able to fit in dialogue that can seem more exposition-y in a way that seems natural but for this specific scene i feel there’s more value in there being no dialogue. in the original japanese dub sen doesn’t actually say anything in that moment, so we’re not immediately aware that haku is actually a dragon. later in the film when the river spirit comes to the bathhouse it’s made clear that it was a river spirit that was polluted and as it leaves and flies off into the distance sen is watching it with a similar look that she had when she saw haku earlier(even if she didn’t know it was him) in this moment i think she starts to put the two moments together and realizes that the first one was a river spirit as well. then even later when sen wakes up to the empty room and steps outside she sees the first spirit she saw and calls out to it with hakus name but then is immediately surprised by herself because she said haku purely as a reaction. so it’s not until that moment that it’s made clear that haku IS the dragon. i think that the way the dialogue was added in the english version takes a bit away from those moments where we watch sen put it together for herself.

No face is the spirt of loneliness which is symbolic for sen having to accept her loneliness. Loneliness grows stronger from greed and it’s in denying greed that she doesn’t get consumed by loneliness.

I've really been looking forward to this, and it was well worth the wait. Really sad to see that this doesn't seem to be getting much attention yet, but it's lovely, and I'm nearly certain that there will come a day where the algorithm works it's way. This movie came out exactly a year before I was born, coincidentally, on the day of my birthday. It has been one of my favorite movies since before starting kindergarten, and, maybe because of that, I've never really thought about it as a piece of art, a carefully constructed story, because watching it has always felt more like a memory, or something. Something like a childhood experience, a memorable camping trip, more just strong feelings and concepts, than something you could analyze piece by piece. So this kind of gentle exploration of it's themes, deep dive into how it all works, with a strong focus on emotions and experiences, acknowledging that it's a movie, but taking it exactly for what it is, not as something to be changed or improved, is something I didn't know I needed. So, thank you.
