Hi, this video shows you how to repair a broken door handle caused by a faulty door latch. The door handle started getting stiff and then stopped working and the door latch was also loose. This video shows the full repair.

Thanks Vince. My bedroom door got stuck after slamming in the wind. After watching the first part of your video I was able to free-up the latch by removing it and tapping it against something solid (presumably shaking out some debris). A few squirts of WD40 and it's now working smoothly again and is re-installed. Great stuff.

So helpful! Thanks. My heavy fire door fell off it’s hinges and i put it back on and now I’m on to the next task, that is fixing a different door’s handle. It’ll be fixed in no time😊

How to replace would have been a more accurate title for this video, although I have to say it was really thorough for the subject

Thanks! We have a door at the shop that continuously sticks so people get stuck in the bathroom. Going to look at the latch and see if it's a bit longer than it should be like yours was...have a feeling that's the issue, but now know how to fix it and how easy it is to fix!

Perfect video!!! Although Aussie door handle mounting hardware is much more complicated that US (we only have two screws instead of four), the diagnosis and treatment (WD40) was right on the money. THANKS!!!

Thanks Vince, just fixed my faulty door latch thanks to your guidance and WD40!

I would try silicone spray rather WD40 as WD40 remains oily and is likely to attract the metal grit that you mention and further seize up the lock.

Thanks Vince. What you suggested did the trick. WD 40 works wonders.

9:20 - I wonder what might have caused that spring to stretch? Would it have been possible to just replace the spring?

Apparently, WD40 is not good for door locks in the long run. The correct product to use is graphite powder. Learned this the other day, as I have similar issues with a sashlock fitting. WD40 will cause dirt/grease to build up. Graphite powder does not.

what if the wood on the inside where the lock is is chipped, can you still fix the handle or do i need to get a new door

If anyone is having the issue where their latch or deadbolt is loose or falling out due to the screws stripping out the inside of the door. I have invented a new door hardware that solves this problem, ReSecure Latch. No more glue, sticks, puddy, or that ugly metal sleeve that ruins the look of your door. Great for DYI people like JPV, property owners/maintenance technicians, and you.

I’ve fitted the new one. It’s not a perfect fit but 99%. But it’s a bit clunky/clicky when opening and seems to need a jiggle. It does open and close. What do you think???

This latch didn't have it but most have two screws that can tighten the latch just behind it when you pull it out. Use a dry Ptfe or graphite powder to lubricate the lock, WD40 will clean it out but it will attract dirt and dust in the long run causing stickiness again.

What about a 30+ year old back door, whose mechanism has stopped working and I can't open it. it is stuck somehow, and think I broke the mechanism in my attempt to dislodge it (the handle now goes around 45 degree more than it should do now, then have to yank it hard back up to get it back to it's normal position and it clunks the mechanism when doing this, whatever that is going on, I don't know?). Meaning I've no access to the other side like you have though. It needs to be opened before I try to fix it, surely. What do I do? Do I have to kill myself? Seems alot easier than attempting to fix this.

I suppose the prices have come down with all the mail order companies like ironmongery direct, or handle king or eBay and they are more affordable even for slim budgets. I got 5 pairs of very modern black matte for under £10 per pair
