Hi, this 'trying to fix' video shows me attempting to repair a Joblot of 15 broken Casio AQ-230 purchased from eBay for £30 ($39). The watches are quartz with an analog and digital display.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

An enjoyable video, even though I never wear a watch or would want to try and fix one. I'm sure if you put them on as a single listing for multiple items (gold or silver) as refurbished at £7 each + postage, you could probably get your money back, make a profit and even cover your labour.

The LCD screens typically use a segmented silicone rubber bar, alternates between conductive, then non-conductive sections, like a sandwich to make connection between the PCB and display. Cleaning the rubber and contacts usually fixes things.

With Casios , I like to short the AC 6 times in a row . Then if it still has jumbled LCD segments I do it 6 more times . Sometimes when you change the battery the LCD will be totally dead or missing or jumbled segments and the AC jump is all they need .

I'm watching this old video for the first time, Vince, and congratulate you on your success. I don't know if you have subsequently learnt this, or considered doing it, but you could have put all the spring-bars in a little bottle on their own, complete with the same detergent you used for the straps, filled the bottle to full, screwed on the cap, and dropped the bottle into the fluid already in the cleaner. The ultrasound would have saved you a lot of elbow grease cleaning them up, and they would not have got lost in the nethers of the ultrasonic cleaner. Bathing them in a small amount of IPA afterwards and drying them in a warmish thermofan oven would protect the springs and metalwork from later rust. Just a thought. Sorry if this is already in your knowledge database!

Every 3 to 6 months we would bin all the broken watches that couldn't be repaired when I worked at Argos. I should of taken them home and sold them like this, to me they were just junk but, you know that saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure"

And yet again, another stellar fix (or rather 14 stellar fixes). And you know what Meatloaf said: 14 Out Of 15 Ain’t Bad (well, not _exactly_ what he said, but close). Also, the crystal is for the chip, which does everything (including I believe the fast spin). Remember that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-game that wasn’t working properly? Yep, that was the crystal.

The LCD Screen does looked damaged, Vince please turn your temp down on thin and single sided boards, The lead-free solders melts at higher temperatures of about 217°C/422°F compared to 183°C/361°F for the lead-based option. They don't have a ground plane to worry about sucking up the heat. Good job less stuff for the land fill.

I love joblots of watches, one this week had a very old Rukla automatic in with a couple nice 'uns but I never know what to do with the ones I fix and now have stacks of working watches hehe I have a "happy face" Sekonda not dissimilar to the Casio's where the digital display is curved in a happy smile at bottom of dial, works superbly. I tried out one of them Indian watches yesterday it turns up, £13 delivered for a 1975 Citizen automatic with a dayglo orange dial, 1970's sized dial tho but absolutely pleased as heck with my first real "quality" piece, so bought a couple Seiko's from the chap...

Good opportunity to drop the bezel from the non-fixer into the ultrasound. As far as I know it should not lift or remove the plating. The plating is in fact metallic so it should be fine in the cleaner. Nice job on the fixes.

Fantastic =D Love watching job lot videos like this! You did incredibly well in that one! Regards when you were thinking about the crystal and thought the analog part should still work regardless, on a watch like this that's incorrect! The Crystal provides the pulses to push not only the digital time keeping along, but also its what provides the pulses to "time keep" on the analog side too on a watch like this (ie. where there's no spring to wind up etc).
@Mymatevince
@Mymatevince 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Chris, it was a very lucky job lot:-) My thoughts at the time were that maybe the quick advance of the hands was powered straight from the motor but I was wrong. Do you happen to know if there is a way to test a crystal in circuit without using an oscillator?
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 4 жыл бұрын
@@Mymatevince The only way you can test the crystal really is with an oscilloscope - any will work, even a super cheap one from China! We need to get you one!!! They output such low voltage levels if you tried to measure voltage across it on a multimeter it probably won't show anything (whilst powered), and by virtue of connecting up the probes, the impedance often stops it from oscillatting properly. When ever you see a totally dead system and its portable (subject to drops), always worth checking the crystal!
@Mymatevince
@Mymatevince 4 жыл бұрын
@@GadgetUK164 Thanks Chris, I was given one over a year or maybe nearly 2 years ago but it is one that plugs into a PC and the software is read on the PC. I did spend a few hours getting the correct software and looking at the different settings back then but it is very hard to understand when you lack the knowledge. If you did a video for beginners on how to use an oscilloscope (really really basic for completely beginners) then you could be the new proud owner of a nice Casio Digi/Analog watch in your choice of Gold or Silver :-)
