Enjoyed that. Even if you could retune the radio controlled clock from DCF77 (77.5kHz) to MSF (60kHz) it wouldn't work, as the protocol is different. They both send the time by encoding it and transmitting as one binary bit every second over a minute, but the order in which those bits are sent are unfortunately quite different.

Let me differ from the conclusion of the fan solution. In my opinion, the plastic holding the blades may not have been sufficiently attached to the mast (grip), which caused that when turning (whatever the speed) it reached a kinetic equilibrium between the rotating metal and the plastic of the blades, that is why both felt the same; however, when placing the heat-insulating plastic that disappeared, and the plastic blade could be attached to the metal mast and reach the same turning speed.

I bought thru Aliexpresses "Choice" a 100 connector bag full of single line Wago's, they can be chained together or clamped to a surface using a zip tie, I would rather trust a Wago than a wire nut all year long (did you know the Chinese call them "nipple nuts"? O.o) The other really useful thing from Ali that cost like 45p is a 3-48v voltage tester, has a very long spring cord fitted with a robust croc clip and a thick clear handle of the probe which has a 3 digit voltmeter embedded in the solid plastic with a very long sharp probe, I was using it today on neighbours car as they said their oil light kept staying on when they had max oil, so I hooked the probe to the oil sender and the sender was working fine turning off when got oil pressure so I set it up to test the line between sender and ECU and that was a dead duck, I quickly knocked up a patch wire and grafted it on and the oil light now goes off properly thanks to a 45p tool :D

For the fan: You noticed that the 2 wires are shorted. My thinking is, there are different 2 resistances on each wire to provide different speeds, but if they are shorted, that the 2 resistances are added together providing an even slower 3rd speed, regardless of which button is pressed. How exactly it got fixed? You'd have to ask Vince.

Hey Nandi, I don't think it was a short, more like 30-40 Ohms. I think the fault was friction against the casing stopping it from going full speed or maybe the fan blades were so loose it was slipping, again not going full speed. Maybe the heat shrink stopped the slipping allowing me to actually notice the top speed. We'll soon find out from the comments section, I'm probably completely wrong!!!!
@DobuDobuDobuDot5 сағат бұрын
@@Mymatevince I think you're right about the slipping of the blades. You had a moment where the casing was not touching the blades and they still weren't spinning any slower or faster. Also, the Amazon-reviews about the "farts being stronger than the fan" would indicate the same problem.

The only things I can think of for the clock are any settings to set the time to the central Europe time signal minus 1 hour, or an ability to replace any firmware with UK version and hope it works. If there's nothing like that as an option then I'd say try and sell it to someone in Europe as it's clearly going to be a pain in UK.

Vince, If the fan oscillation system is purely mechanical you should be able to see the speed difference by timing the full travel, left to right and back, of say 20 cycles in each speed setting. if this had been a live stream I or somebody else would have suggested a circlet for installing the fan blades. That is the purpose of that coil that you found. At the initial testing the blades were probably slipping.
@syntheticcheetah35 минут бұрын
Vince, with the tire pump, most modern car DC power jacks are only rated for a few amps. Basically that is all that is needed to plug in a standard cellphone charger. The no power situation was likely the original customer burning out the fuse with to much amperage draw, and thinking the product was faulty. Whoever processed the return likely didn't even test it.
@TerryLawrence0013 сағат бұрын
I would have loved to see the clock's insides! I believe that the radio setting of the clock is done by a separate module that has the receiver and a micro controller for each protocol. Amazon default is to sell the clock that works where you live, but you can order the other ones as well if you request it. Did someone order the wrong one because it was cheaper, not knowing that it won't work there? There might be a time zone setting jumper inside. More advanced clocks do have a zone option for countries with multiple zones. Here in North America ours is BC!)W-BC for Boulder Colorado (WWVB) There are ~6 zones in the continental US/Canada and WWVB is available to most of these zones.

So many things to comment on! First, the safe. I'd say it's more to use at home to deter kids or maybe in the car when someone is going for a quick smash and grab. Second, the clock! There is no way to adjust the time zone? Here in the US we have 4 time zones and most radio clocks let you choose between them. I'm surprised you can't just tell it to subtract or add hours to whatever signal it's picking up since it looks like the DCF signal would cover a large part of England.

@cedley19695 сағат бұрын
I think the issue with the fan running at the same speed without the blade fitted is that it reaches the maximum speed that 50hz will allow. With the blade fitted the air resistance slows it down and the two different speeds are due to the resistance in the windings generating different amounts of torque.

for the fan: I wonder if the speed might be a factor of torque.. meaning the speed might be the same if there isn't a fan being pushed around, but if there is a fan on it, then one winding will spin it faster because there's more torque being provided. mind, I know nothing of how these things work, just applying some general concepts. ;-)

Mainflingen, Germany DCF 77 is broadcasting on LW 77 MHz. Anthorn, Cumbria is on LW 60 MHz. The receivers are usually pre-tuned to 77 MHz or 60 MHz and can't be altered. Have a look at the internet and you'll find how to wire a 77 MHz receiver to an ESP processor card (or any other computer) and decode the radio signal.

I'm confused 1:19:50 If the kettle is off the base, what does it matter if the switch can click and stay down? It's off the base so there is no power, so it's not going to burn your house down. Is this (no offence meant, really) just another example of British safety laws going overboard? Why does it matter what the switch is doing if the kettle has no power ? I'm American so i don't understand. Thanks in advance.

Sorry to disappoint you, but he fault about the fan, I don't think its the shaft slip. I think the tinned wire is too long, and when they push it in it shorted out the brass bar inside the switch then bypass the two speeds. I think you can notice the hum is more pronounced while its faulty, because one extra coil for lower speed is shunted. If not solved, i think it will also heat up fast. And its normal for speed not to change unloaded in this simple motor, because weaker (slower/longer) coil can push it to max synchronous speed anyway without blade

I guess not having the spring tensioner on inside the fan to clamp it onto the spindle, would cause the fan to slip, once secured tightly on the shaft would allow the full rotation energy to be applied and the low speed is what you initial had with no slip, i wonder if all those negative reviews is because of poor assembly of the fan!
