Antique Swiss Blowtorch Restoration - with testing! Oerlikon Record
In this video i'm restoring an antique swiss blowtorch.

I found this old blowtorch, which was perfect for a nice restoration video. Before i started to disassemble i wanted to know if it still works and it did. The flame was quiet inconsistant and fire leaked everywhere. By the first look i saw that the front piece was damaged very hard, the bolt on top had a lot of slack, the handle of the pump was broken and it didn't lock.
After this first look i started to disassemble. All the parts were really easy to remove and it went very well and fast.
To remove the soot and patina i used a mixture of flour, salz and vinegar. This is a very effective and cheap method, it takes a bit of time but it's worth to wait. I left the parts for 7 days. I made a new bolt on the lathe and recut the thread. To make the bolt black i heated it up to around 300-400°C and layed it in olive oil after it, that makes it also rust proofing. Because i couldn't fix the front piece, i decided to make a new one and it worked very well. I made the gasket for it out of an exhaust gasket, because it had one layer aluminium in it i first made a hole on the mill, then cut it roughly out and finished it with the belt grinder. Next up i removed all the scratches from the tank with sandpaper. As i can't engrave i decided to scratch the letters deeper with a needle and then i polished it. I did the same with the same with the filler cap and made a new gasket out of cork for it. The shaft from the pump was bent very hard, so i did straighten it with a hammer and polished it. As the handle from the pump was broken and it didn't lock, i decided to make a new one. I designed the handle and i was inspired by pictures of simular blowtorches on the internet, i was quiet happy with the endresult. To make a new leather for the pump, i soacked a piece of leather in pure gasoline. I made a die and stamp to bring the leather in shape. To dry it faster i set it on fire and waited until the flames stoped, held it quick under water and left it for 24 hours to dry. I took it out of the die, cut it in shape with scissors and puched a hole in it. I grinded the black handle clean with sandpaper on the lathe and made a new profile on the mill, after that i polished it to make it black and shiny. I made a new wick with a cotton cord.
Then i put it all back together. I used just a little bit grease on all the threads and also on the pump leather. The pump had a very good compression after assembling and i was very happy about the overall looking at the end.

Another cappuccino break very well spent. One of the many reasons your video is so appealing, aside from the many skills demonstrated, is that this takes me back to my own childhood when I would follow my grandfather around while he tinkered at his workbench, fixing everything from clocks to violins and hand making lost parts. AND much like my grandfather, you go about your tasks without speaking and yet the lessons are well learned and the methods passed down. You must be an old soul, as today, we live in a disposable society, where the old is cast away and there is the perception that newer is better. Some of you guys were asking the same questions in the comments, so i'm gonna answer them right here. Why didn't i polish the main part? I wanted to keep that parts original cast structure. That's why i didn't sandblast, grind, wire brush or polish it. I also think it gives a nice contrast to the rest. Thank you guys for all your support lately, i really do appreciate it.

I’m not saying the pieces don’t look good when he’s done - far from it - just that nothing done in these videos is particularly difficult. I tried to restore an old Coleman lantern many years ago and the “Wet Leather & Rocketfuel” fabrication trick was beyond my skillset in regards to the worn out hand pump seal, so my restore failed. Nice to finally know how that’s done! May have to dig up another old lantern one day and try again. I admire your workmanship and machine fabrication skills!

The truth about these (i knew someone who owned and used one in good condition) is that they worked really well as portable tools, but maintenance was a PITA. And i'm referring to all of them. Thank the machine gods for making the modern variants much simpler to use and keep running.

There is a missing cap for the lower burner so the flames aren’t surrounding the handle piece. There was then a wick in it to pull the fuel through the front hole

This channel is an example of why I don’t watch the myriad of ‘documentaries’ on television about restoration and why KZbin can be great. No unnecessary ‘narrative’ wasting 15 mins on, “How and where I found this item and it’s interesting (not) back story”, coupled with an annoying ‘star narrator’, over hyped music and 20 mins of exposition. This is beautifully shot, allows space to wonder and marvel at the skill and craftsmanship, the soundtrack of lathe and sanding/filing is perfect (and Zen-like) and the sheer wonder at the finished article never fails to excite and delight. Its (Your), “I make a new one”’ catchphrase always makes me smile and half the time I ponder, “How is he going do do that!”. All in 15 mins or so. Perfect.

I think the lower reservoir (for lighting the main torch) is meant to have a wick, that way you can get a small flame off of the wick rather than a large flame that just sort of goes everywhere.

If you use what we in the UK call methylated spirits in the priming cup, you won't get all that black smoke. Superb restoration job!

You appear to be missing a piece...the short bit of wick that goes in the tray below the head. It fits in the round bit pointing to the head , directing the flame to where it needs to be to ignite it. It's not meant for the entire try to catch fire, just that forward portion. Also, kind of curious as to why you didn't polish up the entire torch body, to match the new head and the prettily polished tank.

I imagine if he ever truly gets stumped on a piece he can go back to the disassembly footage and see where he took it out from. Ever notice how much attention so many parts get as he takes them off? No doubt it's as much for our benefit as it is his.

I had one like that too. Got it from my grandfather. He was a plumber and worked with her for years. Have also worked with it. Then replace with a gas burner.

What I like about MM is that he does not use gloves, for the most part, unlike other so called "restorers" that are content with doing a half-assed job. MM does not subscribe to the "no glove, no love" BULLSHIT. He is the real deal.

Wow! You Love these machines, my Father Loved T. V. s when they could still be fixed, I fixed TVs when they were built to be replaced frequently then finally altogether. Great Work.

I don't know about everyone else, but there is always one moment in each video which makes me break out in a huge smile, such is the care and attention fostered on one small part to bring it back to life. It happened at 8.46. These restorations are good for the soul.
