This video brings back so many memories like my very first car I bought in 1981 at age 16 for $320 it was a blue 70 Barracuda Gran Coupe with a white vinyl top. It had a 383 with the slap stik automatic console with the overhead console and leather bucket seats. It was in really nice shape except for maybe a few dings and chips. After that I would have 2 more 70 Barracudas and 1 70 Cuda which was the last one I owned. I bought the Cuda in my early 20's for $900. The Cuda was in good original condition still wearing it's factory orange paint with the black hockey stick stripes that read 383, it had a slap/stik automatic and was a super fun car with it's stock snorkel hood and a 3;55 to 1 rear gear. But when I got married I sold the car, I now regret both decisions.

The 70 Cuda is a beautiful car, I bought one years later and still own it, but I remember it was the 340 Duster that was getting all the attention, they were everywhere. My Mom bought a new 70 340, and she loved all the attention she got driving it.

You know I feel so sorry for Mopar. They released several of their greatest cars for the 1970 model year and by no fault of their own between the car insurance crisis, the first gas crisis and the EPA and NHTSA muscle car sales hit the brakes in 1970 and even harder by 1971. I read an article that Dodge was planning on selling 400k Challengers in 1970. They sold 72k. But poplar cars like the GTO, 442 and Mustang all lost 1/3 of their sales or more for 1970. If they had been ready and released the new E body platform for the '69 model year who knows? These cars might be as common as '69 Camaros or '66 Mustangs.

The insurance companies were behind the "Emissions" . I don't buy the Shortage either. There was obviously no shortage of fuel. I worked with insurance a whole lot at my shop. And they control a lot more than you realize, like the government. They wanted the Muscle cars stopped. It cost them too much. They raised prices, but that didn't help much. But the emissions sure did. That was a push from insurance. After that, they got the government to make insurance Mandatory. They lied like Crazy. And people are not very bright, so they believed the lies. "Why should your insurance pay for an uninsured motorist!". But we were forced to keep Uninsured Motorists, and still do today "Insurance Wil be cheaper if everyone had to buy it". Insurance tripled a year later. If you had full coverage before, you'd pay the same price just basic, no full coverage. People we're better off before. They only had Comprehensive and UNINSURED motorist. People jumped on that bandwagon and regretted it after.

Bought a Barracuda in the early eighties as a winter beater had a 318 and slapstick automatic paid 450 bucks for it after winter duties were over I kept it at my Omas house planned to fix it up (it was pretty rough) even then parts were hard to find was broke anyway so I sold it telling myself that someday I would find another one moved to Florida shortly after that it's been 35 years and I've only seen one other on a used car lot the sad thing is most of the pedestrian slant 6 and 318 cars have been turned into Cuda clones man what I wouldn't give to have that car back today and no I would not clone it! My ultimate dream car would be a 70 340 4 speed Cuda in a color I could live with no vinyl top stripes or high impact colors except red black interior a must see them for sale from time to time but cannot pull the trigger on 60,70 grand!
@Tropia5 жыл бұрын
Maybe you sold it to me? The one I bought some idiot cut out the back seat rest and put a huge speaker box in there. I kept that car for another 20 years.

Similar to my story. My first car was a 69 Charger. I bought it for $1500. It had the 383, which blew, and I replaced it with a 440 from a cop car like the original Blues Brothers movie. In 3 years I had to replace nearly every moving part on that car. Engine, transmission, rear end, etc. It was in worse shape when I got rid of it than when I bought it. I had no money, and what little money I had all went into that car. Sure was fun to drive though.

A built in roll bar?
@1967davethewave5 жыл бұрын
The E body cars (Challenger and Barracuda) had a heavy box section that ran through the quarter panels and then curved through the back of the roof above the rear window, and above the headliner. It wasn't actually a "Roll Bar" but was very good rollover protection for standards of the day. The '68 and up Corvette coupes had a similar system.
@montinaladine32645 жыл бұрын
I'm a Mopar guy through and through but at 2:38 I have to admit that they are wrong here. Yes the concealed wipers are a big cosmetic and engineering plus, but compare the plain flat hood of the Plymouth and fenders to those of the Mustang, which has more interesting sculptured hood lines and those raised edges on the tops of the fenders along with a more forward thrusting frontal treatment compared to the non-Rallye Barracuda, which is plainer or straighter in these areas.

Speaking as a disappointed (former) ford owner, these older Mopar promotional films make ford look less than innovative, even 50 years ago...... And the gas tank filler neck almost seems like a crystal ball prediction of the ford pinto
@1967davethewave5 жыл бұрын
True, but the funny thing is that Dodge was building the Charger and the Challenger with filler necks in the trunk and if memory serves correct so was the filler neck on the Plymouth Duster. I own a '68 Charger and a '70 Challenger so I'm not knocking them, it just seems funny to pick on that is being unsafe while you are selling cars with the exact same feature. As well as the Challenger's hood is just like the Mustangs!!!
