That’s what I like about sprites, everyone can draw the characters how they interpret them because they’re so... blocky.
@millakatariina644 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, though it's also kind of a nightmare as an artist sometimes. Like every time I draw a Mother character I spend like 15+ minutes just going to spriter's resource to look up sprite sheets and examining them for multiple minutes wondering like "What the absolute heck does the Masked Man's clothes and arm cannon even look like? Or his hair? How am I supposed to convert those stubby legs with jodhpurs and boots into my borderline anime style with way longer legs?" Every time. It's still fun always though drawing the Mother kids, giving them traits you think would fit, purely based on how you know and feel them to be like. Some things are just a lot harder to infer, imagine, decide and design from a few funny pixels you can barely make out.
@not71704 жыл бұрын
Pixel art is really fun lol
@millakatariina644 жыл бұрын
@Majin Melon You would be surprised. One pretty concrete example of different interpetations is Ness' weight. There is a police officer in Onett that calls him "fat boy", but does that mean anything? Because of that line I've seen some artists interpret him as being chubby, while some just don't care about that line and draw him normal weight. (Lotsa text underneath, if you wanna read it) Some other examples include eye colors. Only Ana has confirmed blue eyes, for the rest of the characters the artist has to come up with what their eye color is. (For example, _my_ Ness eye color is brown, Lucas has blue with some green, Claus has green with some blue, Porky has teal or red when under Giygas's influence, Paula has purple and Ninten has black eyes. I'm sure you've stumbled across someone who has given them a different eye color from those) Also clothes. Sure there are the clay figures and everyone can make out that they have T-shirts and shorts and whatever else they wear, but it's the details that are the real problem. Like I mentioned the Masked Man. He's like the most notorious one. Is his jacket made of leather or what? Does it have a zipper or some other thingy in the middle? Is the collar fluffy and if so how fluffy? Does his uniform have pockets? What should his boots look like given the context of him being the commander of the pigmask army? (they are not rain boots, that's for sure). Are they tall or kind of short? Do they have some sort of heels? And also for characters like Porky, yeah he has overalls, but should I make them look more like what overalls usually look like in real life or leave them as is? Do I give him pockets? Also can I show Porky's eyes or does he keep them hidden? And Ana has a hat for most of the game, but she doesn't wear it in her clay figure. So do I give her a hat or not? Also character heights. Like my Ness is a little short while my Porky is pretty tall. Most others though draw Porky short. And Lucas and Claus are a little above average in my drawings. The Masked Man though has enough heel in his boots to make him about at least almost as tall as Porky.
@millakatariina644 жыл бұрын
@Majin Melon Well, yeah. Of course we use the figures and Smash as references as much as possible. Everyone with a figure or a smash render tends to not change much, besides examples I noted in my previous post. Everybody sees the characters about the same way at first, but when converting them into a different art style, that's where some of the strangest problems just arise and the artist has to make decicions. It should be noted however that none of the Mother 3 characters have official figures made out of them (except Lucas, Kumatora and Boney are in Smash now). So for them artists only have their sprites for reference.
@mr.vidjagamez98964 жыл бұрын
I get what you're saying, but for me personally, I kind of always cringe a bit on the inside when people draw Mother content in say like an anime style. I could be misremembering this, but pretty certain an old interview with Itoi stated that the character designs in-game were inspired by the Peanuts comics, so that style kind of just permeated my view on what the world and characters are "suppose" to look like (plus of course the obvious official art clay models and Smash)
