I think it's over for sporty coupes. The Mustang and Challenger seem to be the only successful ones today. The Camaro is on the chopping block again. Trucks, SUV's are where it's at. Cars are falling out of popularity. Then there's the gradual move to EV's that's happening.
@jordiemorrison7391
@jordiemorrison7391 3 жыл бұрын
@@MisterMikeTexas I'm not so sure, the BRZ, supra and 400z are quite popular. There's still life in the sport coupe class, but I don't think the V8 is much longer for this world in them. With gas prices always going up, people want performance and fuel economy together

You know what Brad? I agree 1,000,000%! See, I can't help but believe in that old adage, "everything old is new again" that we North Americans seem to cling the hardest to. I believe the future still has musclecars (No, I don't like that P.O.S. Mustang Mach Eww or the GT version) and I think Ford should bring Mercury back and create fun, off the wall vehicles that young people would love, but with a Cougar luxomuscle couple and a Marquis sedan (I.C.E., hybrid and all-electric) for the few of us out here who want nothing to do with a C.U.V., S.U.V. or a truck. If Chrysler can successfully sell a Renault Premier platform that's heavily modified by Mercedes for seventeen consecutive years and with at least 35,000 units sold in fifteen of those years, then Ford shouldn't have any trouble doing the same. So, there! 🐰
@MisterMikeTexas
@MisterMikeTexas 3 жыл бұрын
@@1_Papa Umm, Edsel never had a market to fit in, and Ford and Lincoln overlapping into the center market helped make Mercury irrelevant, with less than 70K units sold in its last year. In spite of Cougar, Mercury was unable to shake the grandpa image. No youth would take the brand seriously, because of the grandpa stigma.

Had a '69 droptop with the then-new 351 V8. My dad bought it in '74. He had gone to buy a new Comet 4-door (yuk!), but he saw the used Cougar and the Comet was instantly forgotten. I had a 74 xr7 back in the early 90,s. It had the 460 engine but strangely enough was a column shift. No center console and floor shifter. They paid the money for the huge motor and the vehicle had a lot of options including the power moonroof, but was the only 74 XR7 that I ever saw without a console. It was a real powerful runner with astounding passing gear performance. I miss it, thanks for the video.

I had it repainted metallic dark blue and replaced the half vinyl roof with a lighter shade of blue. It had the 351 Cleveland engine with a 2 bbl carburetor and made 240hp. I then replaced the single exhaust with a dual exhaust turbo muffler system with a nice deep note. I took it to a local drag strip and it clocked 16.24 in the quarter mile at 88mph. I really miss that car. Thanks, for the video!

I had a 71 XR7 with a 351c 2V/ automatic that rolled off the line with drum brakes all around. It was pretty clapped out when I got it, but I had fun with it, fixed a few things, added some minor performance parts, and drove it hard. It became further clapped out and I sold it for $100 less than I paid for it (original price of a lofty $500). It would run at least 120 mph, though. The 1974 model was the last year that customers could get a 351C 4V in any Ford, and was an option in the Cougar. I think they’re pretty rare and if I could one at a good price that wasn’t a rust bucket, I might try to drag it home. The supercharged Cougar/T-birds I found were actually fast, great handling cars. I ran a T-Bird SSC and really appreciated its performance, handling, and braking. They had four wheel discs when the Mustang 5.0s still had to live with rear drums. Heavier cars then the Stang so straight line wasn’t as quick, but great overall performance for the era. A friend who was pretty destructive to cars had an 89 Cougar XR7 with the supercharged 6, and couldn’t manage to destroy it like he’d done previously to a Camero. Nice overall video covering the Cougar.

My first car was an 84 Tbird and my second was a 99 Cougar. I know that last gen Cougars get a lot of hate, but that car was fun to drive. The 2.5l 24v DOHC engine was a rocket and that car handled like it was on rails. Fun fact: that Cougar (at least the 99 model) was the only car to use that specific tire. I went to buy tires for it once, and when they called their supplier to check on availability, when they told him the size he said "you have a Mercury Cougar dont you".

This guy makes great content, I can't believe he doesn't have 280K subscribers. The channel is a hidden gem for now I guess Edit: And I just realized when he uses metric for the 302, he correctly says it as a 4.9L! I'm a fan for life

My dad bought my mom two of these, a 1986 & 1994. He also worked at the Lorain Ford Assembly Plant these were made in. I have fond memories of this car. It's the car I learned to drive in. I grew up with Ford Rangers and Mercury Cougars in the family!

Great Vid on the Cougar. I had a 67 and a 68 in high school in the early 70's, loved those cars and the beginning of my love for personnel luxury cars. Would love to have a 3rd gen Cougar, it was 1970's cool. How about a segment on the 1984 to 1992 Lincoln Mark VII, the sister car to the Thunderbird and Cougar of this period, and a huge departure from the land yachts we were used to seeing from Lincoln.

I had a 1994 Mazda MX6, pretty much the same car as the 94 Ford Probe, but the Mazda was a more classical look. Love to see a video on the MX6.

My first cars were the one I bought from a family friend, a 1976 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royal, and my dads 1966 Malibu! You should do an episode on both of them. However I think finding anything about the Oldsmobile would be the greater challenge, being that the Malibu was definitely the more popular vehicle.

11:11 a fun fact: Ford Europe sells the Kuga (sounds like cougar right?) as the Escape we have here in the states so I guess the name made its return to Europe but not here
@SaraSpruce

Yep, the Kuga name is indeed inspired by the Cougar. Ford Europe also released a smaller crossover called the Puma, the name previously used on a smaller coupe that sold alongside the last generation Cougar.

When I was a young teenager my dad and I restored a 73 Cougar hardtop together as a father/son project. Ever since then I’ve loved the Cougar. Although my favorite is still the 89-97 model. That was a beautiful car in my opinion. I never liked the final generation Cougar that went front wheel drive with Mazda derived drivetrain. The late 70’s was a rough era too. The big cat kinda lost its way for a few years.
