This is a view of the HPE Proliant DL380 Gen7. It uses the Intel Xeon 5500 and 5600 series and can handle up to 384 GB of DDR 3 ram.
This server is available in a rather good configuration for just around $200

My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

Love the HPE DL380 series. One of the best designed and reliable series HPE has. We use G6 through Gen9 without to much failures in the past. The newest Gen10 models look very nice too, I’ll have a hands-on training this week. But I know, you like Lenovo more, but the world would be boring if all people were perfect ;-) Thank you for making these video’s!

Good review! There is another very nice feature : You can remove the media bay with the DVD drive and replace it with another 8x SFF harddisk cage ! Of course you need a second controller then, or you can use a SAS Expander that lets you use all 16 disks in a single RAID array. Nowadays you don't use "battery" backup. The "new" FBWC is a flash / RAM memory with a capacitor (I never had to replace one of these).

this server review is amazing for noobs like me that work alone and dont have some senior to tell us the nasty stuff - like the button to help find a server in the front of the back of the server - certaintly it's on the books, but i most of the time will learn things need, unless it's really core to what i have to do, which in my case it isn't infrastructure

Yay.... Another socket 1366 Server. I just love this. 1366 CPUs are dirt cheap, as well as ECC registered RAM. Also they overclock very well (of course that only works on consumer level X58 Boards). But even on those servers you can play games very well with a good GPU and if the noise isn't a problem. Great Video as always :) greetings from Dresden, Germany

I was given a DL380 G7 with one CPU and 48Gb RAM today. I already have four Dell PowerEdge servers (R620, T410, R310 and R210 II that was given to me as well). Not really sure what to do with one that's why I'm watching videos like this. I was thinking putting a four x 3.5" storage but not sure if the spare Dell H200 controller I have would work. I can always stick it in and see if the BIOS will recognise I suppose.

I don't see the point in buying a DL380 G7. I have 20 G6. They offer the same Performance. The only difference is ILO3 and more RAM support.
@computerboy9766
@computerboy9766 7 жыл бұрын
And those differences are what made me get a Gen7. iLO2 used a old version of java and was a pain in the ass to deal with. More RAM support is *exactly* what I needed for Hyper-V. From my experence, the G7 servers had smoother fan control than G6 and earlier.

I have a rack full of HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen6 in my house, when loaded up and with very little air flow there noisy as heck. Keep cool air blowing at them from the front dead quite. The main difference from Gen6 to Gen 7 was the air baffle the cpu support amount of ram and the riser card, also don't forget ilo3 vs ilo2 on Gen6. BTW you can run these servers with 1 PSU on dual cpu. Question for the crowd has anyone gotten Esxi 6.5 U1 working on a Gen6? I'm still running 6.0 U3 on mine.
@computerboy9766
@computerboy9766 7 жыл бұрын
Never had that problem, have 3 120v fans in the front of my rack controlled by a temperature controller. If the heat in the back exceeds 78*F then the fans all kick on and draw cool air into the rack. Only cost me about $65 to do aswell.

@pietrocavicchioli6128
@pietrocavicchioli6128 3 жыл бұрын
Oh boy, I was thinking about that too, so i did something researches. First of all, I discovered that hp proliant dl380 g7 and dl380p g8 have a huge problem, the support only 1 slot cards, so you will run into some issues trying to fit in them some powerful gpus, but if you are ok with putting a single slot gpu then it's ok, and in this case I would suggest you to buy a g8 (because cpus are more powerful and the upgrade path is a lot better). Otherwise you can buy a dl380 g6, which has the same socket of the g7 but can actually support 2 slot graphics card (even though you have to remove the IO), so you could potentially use it as a powerful gaming rig, or a cheap workstation, since quadro are a bit expensive.
@pietrocavicchioli6128
@pietrocavicchioli6128 3 жыл бұрын
Despite everything man you have to consider one last thing, these machines are noisy as hell, so you may run into some issues using one of those, because if you use intensive applications such as gaming or rendering it'll be like running a vacuum cleaner more or less.

Hi! I have the same server and I have a few questions about it, if you don't mind... First; I have installed Windows 10 on it and when I put it into sleep mode, I can't wake it up, using keyboard or mouse. Usually you just need to check the "allow this device to wake up the computer" in the "power management" tab for the mouse/keyboard but in my case, that "power management" tab is missing. So, is there any option that you know of, that I should enable in BIOS to allow the mouse to wake up the server? And second: when I wake up the server by pressing the power button, it always goes through post screen (power and thermal calibration, etc.) as if it was completely off and not just in sleep mode. That post screen takes up a lot of time, so I'm trying to avoid it by using sleep mode but it still goes through the post screen part. Any ideas about that? Oh and btw, I love your videos, keep up a good work and thanks for your help!

What happens when you plug something that's not the ilo into the ilo port?
@logikgr
@logikgr 7 жыл бұрын
Koltin Nilam Usually, server management traffic is put on VLAN 1, and user traffic, VOIP phones, etc., are on different VLANs. If you plug a cable into the iLO port that is not tied to VLAN1 it will not be accessible to the server administrator, but it will be available to whatever VLANs of the network that that port is part of, such as regular users or other persons (hackers, disgruntled employees, etc) would be able to (possibly) be able to access the server and gain "virtual" physical access to it. They would be able to execute actions as if they had physical access to the server. So, it is a big security risk in a data center/server farm setting.
