Free HP DL380 G6 Overview, cleanup and Upgrades

I have several HP and Dell servers. What I don't like about HP is that once out of contract you can't get bios updates. Dell continues to provide those for older servers along with drivers. For home lab users who are just leaning to use them for IT study are left out in the cold.

I just obtained a refurbed one (I have 2 DELL 2950s from work recycle program years ago). HP also requires a license key to use the built-in ILO2 :( My DELLs both have iDRAC which are free to use.

You could try Snappy Driver Installer to see if it can find a compatible driver for the ATi video adapter

I think you are missing the fan shroud if you hadn’t already noticed. I think I remember these making a bit of difference to the cooling performance

It's ABSOLUTE PAIN to don't have cheap places to buy servers or old hw in 🇨🇱. People put awful prices for junk and obsolete hardware. They sell them at refurbished prices but the products have a lot of details or broken pieces. It's inssuferable

PSU is OEM from Lite-on（光宝），the brand name is printed in Chinese language😂

the g7 is not much different to the g6 as there was only small improvements made, but the riser card slots for the gpu is actually 2 4x and one 8x slot and is not a true x16 slot which is very annoying.

G6 and G7 are basically the same, the only difference is that G7 has ILO3 and G6 has ILO2. I had both versions at home and they had the same performance.

Someone local is selling one for the equivalent of 75$. It would be great for use as a NAS. Unfortunately I don't have enough space in my apartment for it.

I know it´s a bit late but where is your fan shroud that ensures the cpu cooling, or is that only on the G7?

If you can get them cheap they work well, but they aren't energy efficient at all. I've owned a Gen 2, Gen 5, Gen 7 and a Gen 8. The Gen 8 are the start of when they begin using 80+ efficient PSUs and have smarter energy management. I believe they also made 80+ for the late Gen 7 models, but the Gen 8 PSUs are backwards compatible with the Gen 7 and Gen 6. I took a 1200w out of my Gen 8 and put into the Gen 7 and it works fine. If you get something older than a Gen 8, make sure the power supplies are 80+ certified. Prior to the Gen 6, all models had unique power supplies which was a real pain. The DL380/DL360s share the same power supplies it seems beyond Generation 6. The DL360s are also really quiet unless there is other hardware added. The DL380, DL580, and the like are usually pretty loud regardless. The only real down side is everything prior to Generation 10, firmware and system rom updates require a service contract which is insanely expensive.

i have a HP DL580 G7 but won't fire up? i have a amber power light and on the little panel there is a red light flashing after i have pressed the power on but no life coming from it whatsoever, could you shed any light on it, i have changed to psu's but still same. thanks

Red usually indicates a board failure but can be anything from a faulty PSU to no memory to bad PCIe card etc. If you have iLO access, you should still be able to login and see what the error is there. Alternatively, see if any specific things light up on the panel. What red flashing light on the panel is it?

@@CobsTech hi. Thanks for getting back. It didn’t think it would be possible to get the ip address with it not actually powering up but I will try it although never done it in my life ever. The red light is just flashing it has like a heart monitor symbol next to it but that’s all it does flash. I have changed all the psu’s but they give no green light at the back either. I have reseated the ram cartridges thinking maybe that but to no avail. I bought it from eBay only 4 days ago and it arrived this morning the guys described it as fully working etc but actually lied it seems. So because he is now ignoring me on the request of my money back I thought maybe it could be a easy fix. On the motherboard there a a small display that displays the numbers 5.2 them changes to 8.0 or vice versa cause I’m not sure the way of facing for it tbh but the number 8 flashes

What Maximum HDD Storage i can install in this server

I think it's more about how much do you want to spend on storage. It can take 8 x 2.5" drives.For 2.4TB drives will be around $100 used and more than $300 brand new. So that's $800+ for 19.2TB storage. The alternative is get a used Dell Powervault with 12 x 3.5 drive bays, and put 6TB drives for around similar price and get 72TB of storage
