I finally get my allotment this October, I’ve been watching you for ages. So more than anything I’ve seen or read on allotment gardening ( a ridiculous amount considering I had nowhere to garden and live in a flat ), watching you has inspired and helped me think I can do this. You don’t always follow all the rules, and yet have created such a wonderful space by learning as you go. I know that’s the only way I’ll be able to do it too, so it’s wonderful to watch you successfully ( and sometimes unsuccessfully) enjoying your space your way. I’m beyond excited to finally get my plot ( counting the days now ), so this series has literally come just when I need it. Thank you SO much !!

We get a lot of brown paper bags from grocery delivery. Have been running them through the house shredder and adding to compost to balance out grass clippings. Has really helped to bulk our production of compost.

hello Emma, great video about composting totally agree, also you could leave some veg roots into the ground as they are full of nutrients that will go back into the soil for your next bed planting, just cut off the stems and leave in the roots. and put the rest of the plant into compost or lay down on the bed to decompose into the bed.

Thanks for the info Emma. I found it really useful as this will be the first year I'll be preparing beds for next year. I'd heard the thing about cutting peas off at the roots before but didn't know why or if it applied to other veg so thanks for that 😊 it'll certainly help next year.

Follow peas/beans with brassicas- they really benefit from the nitrogen left in the soil by the nodules on the roots.

You are great Emma but why don’t you make your own compost. Add your cardboard and horse manure to that. You need two compost bins. Fill one and leave it for 5 months whilst you fill the other. Don’t waste money buying compost.

Any alternatives to manure? We don't like using any animal products

You can get 'green manure' which are plants that do things like store nitrogen in their roots (which your future plants can then access) or suppress weeds over winter months. There's also mushroom compost
