We used wood chip on our allotment for the first couple of years but the weeds kept growing through despite putting a barrier underneath. Now have replaced the woodchip with stones from the allotment beds.❤

It always surprises me that out of 6,116 views, there are only 742 (so far) likes. If people would just press the 'like' button, that would be a great help to Emma, who, lets face it, works hard to entertain us with her fabulous, funny Vlogs. Thankyou Emma 🙂

I'm with you on the excitement for woodchip. We had a huge delivery on Monday aswell & I was so excited to see it. 4 hours back & forth with a total of 15 wheelbarrow loads & my pathways are now all topped up again. It really makes such a difference to your plot.

U need to check out a "hot bed" or "compost plantbed"! It is a tall plantbed that is full of not-completly-broken-down-compost, witch, makes it hot, to keep on growing in the winter when it gets really cold

You need at least 2 large compost bins. Fill one and leave it for 6 months while you fill the other one. Have bins which let in air. Keep them moist but not saturated. Bury your kitchen scraps in them but not meat. If possible add some cow horse or chicken manure. Turn your piles occasionally to make sure the microbes in them get air. If it smells it is too wet,

@TheMegaross9111 сағат бұрын
My plot always gets massive piles of woodchip. Bags of spent hops. Food compost from the military academy. And loads of pallets/ shipping crates from the double glazing supplier opposite. It's allotment nirvana. My first plot had nothing of the sort 😂 I always use scrap chippings from roadworks for my paths (as I don't like replacing) but I use woodchip for levelling, mulching and balancing my compost bins. It's so useful!

Love Einstein. I have robins turn up when I’m having a morning coffee outside reminding me to fill the trays with meal worms & fill the water trough. They come so close to me throughout the day sometimes to remind me to check the mesh trays & the water. I have peanuts & 2 great suet pellet feeders in the shape of a red cap mushroom (only small birds can feed) so there’s always food but dried worms are a preferred option for my robins. Such a wonderful site ❤

Pro-tip for next time. Tip the barrow into the side of the pile at 45 degrees or so and just shovel push to fill it. Takes seconds. (learned whilst doing 100s barrow fulls while volunteering for a woodland trust)

Yyaayyy the only thing more exciting that a steaming pile of wood chip is a steaming pile of 💩💩💩especially when you’re the only one there. You snooze you loose! I would have got more though if it were me but hey ho. Also just realised that you never seem to label your sowings do you? Probably the fox has pinched the squeaky toy hand brought it for you to scare the crows away from you plot lol x Emma the plot looks fab. PS I think rocky wants some food lol also if he turns his back on you and bumps you with his head he trusts you. I’d take a box of cat biscuit to Lottie with you next time. Give him a scratch on the head and shoulders he’ll love it and you. Emma I look forward to joining you on your composting journey. You can make compost bays out of pallets if you can get your hubby to drop you7 pallets off you can make 3 compost bays in an nnn shape 4 sides and 3 backs all fastened together with zip ties. Simples. You need hubby to help you with this one though Emma. You can turn the pile of weeds you have into them leaving a space to turn into next year when it’s rotted down and it will do.

I'm jealous over your steaming pile of woodchip, gardening in Michigan I have the garden right in my yard however I am lucky enough to have neighbors that own horses, cows and chickens so I get the compost from them, all of my pathways are that black plastic.. Actually my entire garden is that plastic it does help with weeds! I call myself a lazy gardner 😅

Emma you can take that home and put it out for collection as it has bind weed in it. Bind weed should not be put on the compost as it will not get hot enough to kill it.

If a cat shows you its butt it means it trusts you. If it headbuts you it likes you. It took me years to get my bindweed out - kept having to dig at it, however if you leave even a tiny bit of root it will regrow. Tried the trick of the soapy water spray with garlic and I hoped it would get rid of my cabbage aphids. No such luck though.

Stop using a shovel to dig the woodchip pile… take a biggish plant pot and scrape it off the top of the pile fill that then put it in the barrow… it’s faster and better than hitting a rock hard pile with a fork or spade
