When I was a small child in elementary school, while learning about the first Thanksgiving, the teacher brought in some colored corn like you have. She explained that the corn originated from the American Indians who had saved seeds from one year to the next and they used the corn in ceremonies and parts of their dress and as jewelry. Our Mother got some every year and made door decorations every Fall and Thanksgiving. We peeled the husks back, but left them attached, tied them in sprays and handed them out to neighbors as a sign of friendship as well. It was fun to see it again as I do not see them in the stores anymore. October 14th is Indigenous Peoples Day. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Ahhh… memories as a farm kid this time of year! We had acres and acres of feed corn for the animals and to sell to the co-op, but also corn for us in the garden. Dad would pull up the truck full or corn in the back yard under the trees and a pile of galvanized tubs, we’d all sit in lawn chairs or on the tailgate shucking corn and detasseling, taking breaks with iced tea and watermelon. Then I’d ‘help’ mom process the corn for the freezer, mostly off the cob, saving a big batch for fried corn the next day with fresh green beans, new potatoes, fresh tomatoes, prob pork chops and cornbread. ❤ Sure, all your gardens are absolutely amazing, but the family memories you’re all making for yourself and your kids are deep and lasting.
@leapintothewildАй бұрын
PS Could you plant your corn between two rows of ranch panels so they’re sandwiched in between? 🤔 They could literally fill the space sandwiched between, then just harvest from each end toward the middle, and they’d have nowhere to fall when it’s windy. Hmmm…

The corn is ah maizing 😉 such pretty colors! Benjamin, my favorite was that red - orange with the sunbursts and splashes of dark color!! I also enjoyed that silly corkscrew one with the lavender and white✨ It was kind of a series of "Kodak moments" during your harvest - it is just fantastic to have watched Benjamin grow, blossom and mature. I can envision him squaring off his own plot for pumpkins, watermelon, carrots, flowers, lol, all the things😊 with his own camera - a channel? 😳 Ok... I'll rein it in, but that young man is doin' things and goin' places...one can tell he has a loving, intelligent, sensitive, inquisitive circle around him. Looking forward to Samantha Grace's antics and proclivities!

The first time I grew ornamental corn was 21 years ago and it was so much fun "unwrapping" each one. The ears look gorgeous spilling out of a cornucopoia basket I have.
