All those long stringy branches on a compost heap need to be cut up as small as possible. It's a surface area thing which let's worms and microbes in. Turn the top half into a pile next to it. Take the bottom half to your best new compost bin. Shred cardboard, coffee grounds, veggy waste, old strulch, slugs - all make good compost😂❤

Allotment life is Always full of surprises Emma. With raspberries if they have a brown stem cut them down to the ground, if they have a green stem leave them and tie them in. Summer raspberries grow on this years green stems and autumn raspberries make new green stems in the spring. Simples 😊

Hello Emma. I prune my raspberries in the fall. Cut off at ground level the canes that produced berries this year, the ones that are just foliage this year, will produce berries next year. They have a 2 year cycle. After a cane has berries, it has reached the end of its life. It will not grow next year. Good luck with the film crew. Love your vlogs. xox 🇨🇦

All the stuff from the top of the old compost bin can go into your new bin and then you will be able to access the well rotted material from the bottom to use on your beds.

You may not have time to read your comments before the film crew arrives on Tuesday, but I'm sure it'll be fantastic! Fall gardens always have their own special look, and yours looks great compared to my back garden this fall season! Tell Einstein to bring his mates for the big day!

Hi Emma, your getting the hang of composting. Keep chopping it up as you're adding it. Saves a lot of work in the end, because it speeds the process up and makes it easier to turn. Keeping it covered stops the rain from turning it into a mushy mess, it also helps to keep some of the heat in. Lining the inside with cardboard also gives it extra insulation for retaining the heat. Every now and again, give the top of the pile a fork over to prevent anything from setting root, it also helps speed it up. Keep up with the good work and good luck with the filming.

Oh Emma. You made me laugh out loud with putting that compost in the bin. I've become almost obsessed with making compost once I got a good start like you. All goes in now, kitchen scraps, grass, leaves, you name it. Love your blog.

A good way would be to get a grate on top of your wheelbarrow, and then the fine compost will fall through it. The bind weed will stay on top. A spade is flat perfect to cut straight edges into a hole or edge of a bed. A shovel is scooped like a spoon perfect for loading compost or sand or woodchips.

TO MAKE COMPOST YOU NEED YOUR GREEN (vegetable waste and manure), BROWNS (leaves, fine wood chip and cardboard), WATER AND AIR, so don’t forget to water your compost heap. Don’t be scared of pruning raspberries, they’re pretty hardy and difficult to kill.

Don't put invasive weeds like bindweed in your compost bin. Bag them up separately & dispose of. Also, a compost pile needs to be turned with a pitchfork periodically. Don't forget to add vegetable & fruit waste scraps. Prune all raspberry canes that have produced berries this year to the ground.

If you're worried about putting bind weed in your compost or any thing which has the potential to root. I have some of the black compost bins, which I put stinging nettles bind weed seed head's, etc. I call this my dirty compost. So I add everything, and every 6 months, take the bin off from the top. It's a bit tricky the first few times, but once u have done it a few times, it's easy to do. Then, just turn it all back into the compost bin. I also add to this within the 6 months. If you do this, you can still get a good compost it's just a little slower. This way, you still get to compost everything. I even pur bramles chopped up small into my dirty compost. Literally, anything I don't want in my main compost in for whatever reason, goes into my dirty compost.

I don't want to sound like a safety sally but if you turn your wheelbarrow around to the direction you will be pushing it, it will stop you causing you back pain or worse... fair enough the stuff you were wheeling wasn't very heavy but the habit of doing it properly ready for when the stuff you are wheeling is heavy
@46FreddieMercury91
@46FreddieMercury91 2 күн бұрын
When it comes to the heavy stuff, you want to get the heaviest load at the front on the wheelbarrow, so the weight is directly above the wheel. Makes quite a difference.

Einstein comes and perches near you because he wants to get at the lovely juicy worms you've dug up! He probably gets enough food without the mealworms; birds don't go hungry on an allotment! Hope the tv filming went well.

I always thought you should cover the compost to keep the heat in
@dereknash3638
@dereknash3638 Күн бұрын
Wish you luck with the TV show. You should be getting emotional over compost, making your own saves you a fortune and is great for your beds. In my small home garden I use 3 x 120 litre Heavy Duty Garden Waste Bags to make compost and rotate them, making holes in bottom for drainage and to let worms in. Cut all my garden waste up into small portions and place in the first bag in alternative layers of browns & greens using cardboard broken up into small pieces to help with the browns keeping the contents moist. Approx 4 months I turn the compost over, moving contents from first bag to the second, then at 8 months turn it again into 3rd bag after a year I have a 120 litre sack full of compost, to place on garden which I have just done to place over my dahlia bed to protect them from frost. So now my first bag is empty ready tto receive contents of 2 bag. Yes it’s a pain to keep turning compost but end product is worth it. A shovel is what it says for shovelling sand, cement etc and has curved sides, a spade is for digging hence the sharp front edge.and straight sides.
