This is very simple and quick way to make wooden dowel rods using a simple method of making dowel cutter. This dowel cutter is made by using a 3/4" hex socket and it can make wooden dowels of diameter 12 mm.

@@domderaimo based on life experience I have come to the conclusion that 10mm socket bits either A: do not exist and are simply a short lived shared hallucination of us all, or B: are made out of a radioactive isotope with an extremely short half life such that they immediately decay into energy invisible to the naked eye. This is the most reasonable explanation for the fact that they instantly disappear.

@@JoeyRam. of course, to make this tool required a socket, a drill press, a drill bit, a Forstner bit, a piece of wood, and a grinder. If you can afford all that, I don't think you need to skimp on dowel cutters. Personally, I prefer to keep my sockets as sockets because I might need that particular size one day. I would hate to be having trouble removing a bolt one day only to discover that some genius has turned my socket into a dowel cutter. Perhaps at that point I could find another genius video about how to grind your hammer into a socket. Wouldn't want to waste time waiting on Amazon, or run over to Harbor Freight or Home Depot if I'm in a hurry. Nah! Because I have no idea that I might be needing a dowel cutter on my next project. Absolutely no idea. And it would probably be so much more intelligent to waste even more time hacking up my other tools rather than just buying what I need before I need it.

This makes a lot of sense though, as those tools can be acquired over time, and most serious builders have all the above. Things like dowels though, are much more expensive in the long run to buy premade. While a beginner will find buying a single dowel for a task much cheaper, when you do it over and over those cumulative costs really add up. By using tools you already have to make a new tool, someone who goes through a lot can make recurrent stock from scraps.

Nice work. I've made many dowels, and there are several ways to do it. This cutter is great, good job. If large dowels are needed, say 1-1/8", cut material 1-1/2" square on table saw, then rip 1/8" off corners, creating a 1-1/8 octagonal profile. Then shape one end to fit drill, the other to fit a hole in a wood block. Clamp block in vice, spin workpiece with the drill, and use 36-grit paper, in the other hand, rhythmically up, and down the shaft until smooth. Works for any size dowel when larger ones are needed.

On one hand I totally agree w you, sometimes I skip to see what method someone has "invented". On the other hand, I sort of understand this, when I lived in relatively rural S. America, the local hdware store had sockets and cheap drills but did not have any dimensioned lumber or dowels etc. They were available in the city a few bus rides and hours away. To make a project - especially something repeatable to sell - it would be convenient to use what you have to make what you want. From the logo, and skin color of the hands, I'm guessing this fellow is from India, maybe, and in a similar situation. That having been said, though, overall, you're right, a lot of youtube videos make me scratch my head.

@@sour_grapes4280 well. It comes in a 12’ length. And the average size you actually use is only a couple inches so I think you can make 10 outve one stick. I don’t know about you but my sockets are expensive and time is money and that’s too much time

Apparently, in third-world countries, the angle grinder is the ubiquitous "machine shop in your hand." I don't think they'd have The Wheel without it. It's plain to see they wouldn't have The Axle.

Hate to burst your bubble, but I can make a dowel with about 99% fewer steps. Place your square dowel into a grove and plane one corner. Rotate, plane the next corner. Repeat process until smooth. Takes about a minute per rod, none of this machining required.

The simplest way? I don't think so. Lots of simpler ways on KZbin. And why sacrifice a socket doing it this way? Start with a plug cutter and cut the bottom off if you must. Angle grinders have s lot to answer for.

In the corporate of Australia how long do you think you'd last with the saftey laws, also I'm surprised you publish such dangerous methods & how many people have been harmed by your influence. I could not employ someone who will eventually have an accident & be a liability. Also the best way to destroy your tooling is insecured work no coolant or cutting compounds. We have trades & certificates of competency here to ensure regulated saftey & efficient use of tooling, materials & machine operation.

Obviously dowels can be purchased at a store, this is how things are produced when no source is available. You would exchange time and effort for the ability to get something done. In less developed parts of the world hand cutting and files are used. Afghanistan craftsmen replicated British repeating rifles with hand tools in the 19th and 20th centuries.

To all that say repeatable action blah blah blah , mother of invention blah blah , the big box stores are to hard to get to blah blah, you just witnessed a giant step backward. Yeah it's real difficult to run pine "whitewood" through it. When do you use a pine dowel? Let's run a chunk of hickory or maple or oak through it .Who hasn't had a brilliant idea then spent a entire day on it just to realize it was pointless, because there is a better way. For a guy in a third world country making sht from scrap from a dump, yes this would be helpful. But wasting your allotted 2 hours of electricity to make dowels is not spent wisely.

This is great if you live in small town in middle America where getting access to a hardware store can be hassle. However, for everyone else living in metropolitans or more densely populated areas where you have access to supply stores this is way too much work. For what you just lost in the cost of wood (especially these days) plus time and the cost of the wasted socket, you could have easily purchased a new dowel maybe even two at your local Lowes/ Home Depot.

Great idea. And, it is the perfect use for cheap-assed sockets that are manufactured in China also. You could modify the sockets right there at the child-labor sweat shop, BEFORE someone skins their knuckles due to socket failure. 😆

Why not go one step further and create a sled on tracks for your hand-drill that maintains perfect perpendicular shaft alignment with the cutting tool? If you're going to go through all this trouble for a dowel, it might as well be perfectly straight.
