Restoration of Old Blacksmith Anvil

In this video you will see the restoration of an old blacksmith anvil quite damaged. I ran into some complications especially the tempering one , I hope you enjoy this video or at least it entertains you !
HISTORY :
The anvil traces its origins to the fifth millennium BC. of C. It is known that in 4200 a. from C. Flat stone blocks were used as an anvil on which soft metals such as copper were forged. Iron was later used to work harder metals.

Im always screaming and raving when i see people take so much of the surface of an anvil when they restore it, and simply replace the face with high carbon steel. Seeing you harden the face brought me joy! Good job! I think that you would have had an even better result if you would have moved it around in the watertank more during cuenching, adding new cold water does a lot, but steam jacket is a real thing! Well done sir! That is a well restored anvil!

Marvilloso trabajo, tú si entiendes lo que es un yunque y como debe ser tratado. Justo cayó en mis manos un (creo) Peter Wrigth de 113 kg con la mesa destruida, alguien lo modificó haciendo una escala de medición (supongo) de surcos de amoladora rellenos de estaño cada pulgada, justo esto es lo que pienso hacerle. That anvil was an extremely poorly cast one from the factory. Nice restoration job. I was quite worried it might crack where the lead was poured in when you re-tempered it. All of the re-facing jobs I have seen were where the anvil was put into a large forge and the new face forge welded on. I treated my wooden base block bottom and sides with a copper base paint to kill any bugs trying to get into the wood. My friend and I both painted the sides and bottoms of our anvils with Atco Carbon Elastic paint. Horrible smell and takes a couple of weeks to dry, but in the last 50+ years since we treated them, no rust through the paint. I did like the routing of the anvil block for a good fit. Kudos on that idea. All in all, a very nice restoration job.

Great anvil restoration accomplished with fairly basic tools. However, aesthetic speaking, the brightly coated / modern manufactured chain and lag screws are dissonant chords that detract from the rest of the project. JS Some hand crafted chain as well as hand formed square head screws in the stump band, with some flat strap anvil tie downs would push this beauty over the top. 💪

The plate is not forge welded to the top like it was traditionally done. Only the edges are welded so there's an air gap along the entire center. It looks good and will be a good working anvil, it isn't done properly and the face is prone to cracking in half now.

sorry but strongmaster is correct - if your content with light forging it’ll be fine but if you start to put some force into your forging there’s a good chance that top will part ways with the body of the anvil

What a huge undertaking! And your results were quite Good! As per the anvil itself, I would venture to say it's a Vulcan. Or one other the variants produce by Vulcan. Arm n hammer was one such and there were others produce for outlet store which carried little or no markings, and usually of lesser quality. IMHO you "had" one of the lower quality ones. "Had" because your transformation has raised to from the dead and made a higher quality end product. Can you share the grade if steel you added to make the top plate? Appears to be 20mm to 25 mm thickness? End result appears to be in the 80 to 90 kilo range? Nicely done Sir Blessings aboundant Crawford out 🙏🏻🔥⚒️🧙🏼‍♂️

Impressive amount of work for that anvil ! A simple block of iron would work well enough, especially with a hardened surface. For your anvil however, i had a few concerns : First, the fact that the face was only welded on the sides meant it wasn't all a single solid block, and i'm wondering if you're not losing energy trough vibration and the gap between the face and the body of the anvil. Then of course, it seems you had some problems with the hardening. You said OK on the video, but the anvil was still clearly soft (the file was biting in the face, even a medium carbon steel like C40 would mostly skid a file after a quench). Are you sure you used hardenable steel for the face ? Because in that case, don't bother hardening it. Then, for hardening, you need to heat up everything evenly at a cherry red. No less, no more. For that, i think it would have worked better with a slightly bigger pit, AND way more charcoal all around. The key is really to make a large fireball insulated by a thick layer of charcoal all around. When you quenched, the anvil didn't look hot at all. A magnet shouldn't stick when you quench.

Muchas gracias !!! Use acero C45/F114 que dio unos 55 HRC después del temple ,podrías usar 5160 pero tendrías que templarlo con aceite con lo que conlleva preparar mas de 100 l de aceite para el temple y no te aseguro que no quede demasiado duro y se te rompa el yunque con el uso , saludos !!
