Old 1930 Electric Motor (OLD TOOLS RESTORATION)

In this video you will see the restoration of a very old electric motor, from what I could find out it is from the year 1930 approximately, below I will leave you a little history about the company that manufactured this emblematic motor.
EMF Dordt is the name by which Willem Smit & Co.'s Electromotorenfabriek Dordrecht became known. This company existed from 1910 to 1977 in Dordrecht, in the Dutch province of South Holland, and the company manufactured electric motors.
History
EMF Dordt originated from the Smit Slikkerveer company and was founded by Willem Benjamin Smit. As the demand for electric motors increased, Smit Slikkerveer began to focus on large, specialty motors and generators. Series production of the most common engines would have to take place in a separate factory and a site for this was found in Dordrecht. Therefore, the company used the name: Smit Dordt as its logo. It was agreed that the engines manufactured in Dordrecht should not exceed 15 hp (11 kW). The largest engines would be manufactured at Slikkerveer.
In 1914 the limit was increased to 18 CV and in 1915 to 30 CV. In 1918, however, the demand for engines over 30 hp was also met and now EMF Dordt became a competitor to Smit Slikkerveer. The company name has now been changed to EMF Dordt. The company grew well. The registered capital (NLG 200,000) already doubled after two years (in 1913) and even increased to NLG 1 million in 1918. At that time it employed 160 people, in 1920 to 180. In addition to the factory (three floors) at Korten Parallelweg, the company also owned a factory building in 's-Gravendeelsedijk (including dyers). The 1920s were reasonably prosperous and the company was not even relatively affected by the economic crisis of the 1930s. In 1933, the Vereenigde IJzerfabrieken electric motor construction department became De Vijf in Doetinchem taken. In mid-1932, the NV Electric Machine Company, abbreviated EMO, was founded as a subsidiary, into which the manufacture of household items such as vacuum cleaners was incorporated. After initial success, it was liquidated again in 1940.

*manually* rewinding a stator isn‘t only labor work, it‘s an art! my deepest respect for this, including professionally folding the isolation paper. of course, the filling factor in the slots isn‘t professional anymore, and continuous perfomance will have go down without a resin impregnation. but the simple fact that someone manages to rewind a stator is really impressive.

Restored more than a few industrial motors. Had a dip tank for degreasing, (#1 cause of motor failure) and an oven for baking the varnish. I let the motor shop do the rewinding....

No trades like that are becoming extinct, I was a tool grinder for years resharpening metal cutting tool for machining. Now most tools are throw away or replaceable inserts

Your refurbishing skill is amazing, respect your patience to bring a dead 90 yo motor to new life👍. But just wonder if the centrifugal switch worked properly? As the test speed looked much slower than 1,4xx rpm due to the switch did not cut the starting winding off to attain the running speed.🙂

Would I be right in guessing its an induction motor, never seen an armature/brushes like that, I thought I had patience. Man your in a different league. Patience of a saint springs to mind.

You are correct however this doesn't have an armature (windings on rotor) or brushes, it has stator instead (outside winding). the part that looks like brushes is a switch that turns off the capacitor (used to kind of kick start the motor) once its up to speed (weights go flying out at set speed, disconnecting from the rings and cutting the circuit).. hope that was the information you was looking for :)

Not sure you will receive this, but... I believe the maker would wheep tears of joy, seeing how his motor was restored. But, for the stator [or any windings] heat the whole thing up in an oven to ~120° - dip in varnish & leave in for around 20-30sec - take out and place back in oven as the whole thing cools down. Alternate - place in vacuum flask with varnish - take out and bake in oven at ~120° You need the varnish to penetrate and hold the wires firmly in place as the motor starting torque is applied to them. Otherwise, as the wires move, they will rub off their own [intrinsic] varnish and short out. Awsome video. Thank you.

Aquí en Argentina se re bobinan motores tambien. No son grandes lugares tampoco por lo menos los que estan en mi ciudad pero si tienen un intermediario. Algunos reparan electrodomesticos tambien.

@@ezequielaugustodelcastillo6467 el detalle con los motores actuales es que algunos son muy comerciales Y en ocasiones sale casi al mismo precio uno nuevo que reembobinar. Normalmente se reembobinan motores un poco antigüos o del cual ya no hay refacciones como para una bomba de agua. O aquellos que por la calidad del material con el que fabrican las piezas del motor lo permiten (en algunos casos sufren mucho desgaste) En este caso, el motor es una maravilla, sin duda los fabricaban para poderse conservar, dar mantenimiento.

You lost me on the windings. It takes a lot of knowledge of electric motors to do that. But I might try sometime. I completely disassembled a semi-automatic rifle recently to restore it and I’m pretty confident I can re-blue all the metal, refinish the wood and re-assemble it.

He trabajado en un taller de reparación y mantenimiento de motores eléctricos y lo que sólo te ha faltado ha sido equilibrar el rotor 😂, es coña; cuando he visto cortocircuito no me esperaba que lo fueses a rebobinar! Muy buena restauración, ha quedado de 10 y además va muy fino. PD. Los motores de hoy en día no son como los que se fabricaban antiguamente, esos eran casi a prueba de bombas y con un buen mantenimiento lo que llegan a durar...

Please note the front and the back cover of the Motor are fitted upside down ( you may not know that because the motor you got was assembled like that) . Quedó ruidoso porque el centrífugo de partida está desregulado. No es solo cambiar resortes de tensión. Los resortes nuevos deben tener las características de los que ha cambiado. Se notó que al quitar la energía eléctrica cesó el ruido y nada rozaba aún cuando giraba el inducido antes de detenerse.

Fantástica restauración, menudo desafío 👍🏼💪🏼. Especialmente el rebobinado del motor, que locura. Como te organizas para volver a montar las piezas? Las numeras o vuelves a ver el vídeo? Cuando yo hago algo (remotamente) parecido siempre me sobran media decena de tornillos que no se dónde poner...😁

jaja que bárbaro; la carcasa del motor es ¡una placa" de 1/2" de grosor aproximadamente;nada que ver con la simple lámina de 3/16" de las carcasas de la actualidad. Conocimiento y capacidad del experto para reparar un "dinosaurio" de los motores eléctricos;construyendo un nuevo devanado; lo increíble que pudo encontrar los rodamientos ¡91 años despues!;no cabe duda que antes las cosas se fabricaban para durar. Felicitaciones al experto,es un maestro de maestros. Saludos.

I didn't rewind too many single phase motors in my days with the NAVY, as we tended to deal primarily with 3 phase motors. Never the less, I considered the tools I had to work with was quite primitive compared to a shop that was dedicated to motor rewinding but the method used in the video were even more primitive than what I experienced. Well done considering the (rewinding) tools you worked with to restore the motor.

sí, muy bien, sin embargo, no empacaste esos rodamientos correctamente, por lo tanto, se quemarán rápidamente. debe desarmar y empacar la grasa correctamente. yes, very nice, however, you did not pack those bearings properly, therefore, they will burn up quickly. you need to take back apart and pack the grease properly.
