Myriam, first, I must thank you for contributing to my ever expanding craft accoutrements occupying real estate in my craftroom--i now have 16 ranger alcohol inks and the cute little metal box in which to store them... second, my husband asked if I'd pick up drinking alcohol as my extracurricular activity as he believes it would be more budget conscious... happy crafting

Thanks so much, Miriam. This marvelous ruling tool is just what I wanted!!! I had one in college, Lord knows whatever happened to it over the decades, and since I had forgotten about this marvelous tool, I just ordered one from Barb at Joggles. Love watching you play and tutor us in the art of alcohol ink. You are my “go-to” (and I love your giggle.). I’ve learned such valuable information from you. Thanks, again, Miriam.

Very interesting. I love to see new things done in the mixed media world and you do a great job of keeping us up to date with this one. This technique has its advantages over other ways of masking but I find I’m attracted to a thinner white liquid masking line. Don’t even know if this is possible with these pens. All in all every kind of technique has its place in producing artwork. Thanks for showing a tool I had never even heard of!!!
@MyriamsNature3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dottie! I’m sorry that I didn’t get this point across... you can make a masking line that is hair thin with this pen. The reason I didn’t is that such a thin line would have gotten lost in a piece like this. Now about the color of the liquid... given that it will be rubbed off I’d love to hear what makes you prefer a white liquid over other colors (I’ve seen cream, grey, and blue so far.) I had never heard of this tool until last year either. 😁 When I finally but got around to getting one I started to see lots of uses for it. I hope you’ll stay tuned to see. Thank you for your thoughtful comment 😘💕.
@Dotalina333 жыл бұрын
Myriam's Nature you are so kind in responding to my comment. First , yes, I will be watching for further vids on the use of this tool! So fun! I guess I didn’t describe what I meant by “white line “ being wide. It wasn’t the masking fluid being a particular color, it was after the masking was rubbed off the outline was wide. Gees hard to explain. But I think you said the pen could make a finer line if preferred. So we have arrived!! Whew! 😄 Thanks again! See you soon!

Fun video, and a great idea with the masking fluid ! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Those first ruling pens looked like what I was buying but they each came in a little container, I got them from England thinking they were better quality than the ones from China, I paid £26 for them which converted to aussie dollars was $52 but they are so cheap and nasty I could have got exact the same thing from China all cheap and nasty for a few dollars ....I was so annoyed! Just rubbish and the metal is so rough !

I'm curious and a seasoned water colorist. Why didn't the dried second layer of masking fluid take off the ink when you removed it from that plastic paper? Seams like the rubbing alone would do that. Thanks for the video.
@MyriamsNature3 жыл бұрын
Hi Will! These are my educated guesses in answer to your question: Alcohol ink has a resin binder built in making it pretty “grippy”. In certain circumstances (like from glass or glazed ceramic tile maybe) dry masking fluid could theoretically lift alcohol ink if the ink had been thinned so much that its binding was ineffective. - Synthetic paper (like Grafix, Yupo) has just enough tooth, however, to grab on to even very thinned alcohol ink and keep it in place. - Finally, unlike pigment-based watercolor, alcohol ink is dye-based so I’d imagine it’s thinner and can therefore seep into the finest tooth. I hope some of that explains it 😅. Thank you for your kind words.
@will12347143 жыл бұрын
@@MyriamsNature I agree. Also could it be that alcohol ink is ground much finer than pigment in watercolor? Which also could be why alcohol ink is so much more brilliant than watercolor. I know that I am being very technical but I appreciate the way you explain your videos in detail. Thanks
@will12347143 жыл бұрын
Sorry that is along the explication you had.

I tried to use this masking fluid technique. I bought the masking fluid from art store. I got the Windsor Newton brand but it was thicker than what you show in the video and did not go on smoothly and ended up destroying the alcohol ink below when I removed it. I notice you use a small cup. Are you thinning it with water? Is there a better brand? I went to your Amazon page but didn’t see masking fluid.
