Those of you who are having problem with method 2, use "mysqladmin -u [YOUR_USER] password" to create new password for user and that may work.

Thanks Suman: will just add that if you run into 'ERROR 1819 (HY000): Your password... current policy standards', as I did, thats probably due to mysql_secureinstallation thing. You can use SET GLOBAL validate_password_policy=LOW, and type in a simple one. Note, still doesn't accept empty string.

Thanks for the video. If doing option 2 you can avoid doing option 1 later by changing the Step: mysql:~ UPDATE user SET plugin='auth_socket' WHERE User='YOUR_SYSTEM_USER'; to mysql:~ UPDATE user SET plugin='mysql_native_password' WHERE User='YOUR_SYSTEM_USER';

try using root or password as the password for default. or you change the password aswell if you know the username. service mysql stop mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables & mysql -u root mysql> use mysql; mysql> update user set authentication_string=PASSWORD("YOUR-NEW-ROOT-PASSWORD") where User='root'; mysql> flush privileges; mysql> quit # service mysql stop # service mysql start $ mysql -u root -p
