I know Myst was criticized for its overacting (it was just the creators, who aren't professional actors, doing the parts), but these 2000s era character renders just dilute all the tension and shock of the original endings. Now I feel like I'm watching a bad simulation of some asshole in a library, rather than I'm trapped in some formless limbo, watching in helpless terror as an egomaniac gleefully rips my only hope for salvation away from me a bit at a time, cutting me off from the strange but safe world I've come to know and understand.

I sincerely hope that they use real people for the remake of Riven (and that they can get good actors to play Gehn and Catherine); between this and Myst V, it's clear that 3-D models of people really aren't Cyan's forte.

The first ending, where you go to D'ni without the white page, despite being a bad end, is my favorite for some reason. Just how disappointed Atrus is when he realizes you don't have it. :-) I kinda like the Riven ending where you do everything but save Catherine for similar reasons.

There's a way to tell who to trust. Both Sirrus and Achenar have said the same thing: one wrongly imprisoned the other. However, there is one small yet critical inconsistency. If their claim were actually so, one of them would be free, but they're both imprisoned. The only way they could make the same statement is if they were *both* lying, thus the real ending is that the one to trust is Atrus instead of his sons.

Unlucky that the good ending is the most boring one.. without an end so far ( i did that the first time). Beside that the others are quite cool, the tension of the decision to make that grows up during the game makes the blue and red book ending very unespected. Nice game

You think the ending where Atrus traps his own sons in permanent solitary confinement (in this version apparently a nightmare vortex) is the most boring? Ik his voice actor is consistently kinda flat but you have to imagine it tore him up (lol) to do that

@@pissfrogSo when you go back to the library after the “good” ending, both the red and the blue book have been burned. Does that indicate that Atrus killed both of his sons? Kind of creepy, even though they were evil.

@@rocky_wang Yes, I gathered that’s why the “winning” move was to free the father and not either of the sons, because the father was the only honest character.

I think it would have been neat to get a glimpse of Haven and Spire here. I think it's a good thing they reworked it in Myst IV so that Atrus didn't leave his sons to die of thirst & hunger in a complete void. That would be too cruel. 😟

I REALLY want this game, for the updated textures and all the goodies. But... I just don't know if I can handle the 3d characters at the end. To me, the FMV added a real sense on being there. And the new models don't even look that good. Meh, I'll pick it up on sale. More MYST is good MYST. edit to ad, I know why they went the way they did, because it's heavily designed for VR, and FMV just wouldn't work.

OMG! If you play it NOT in VR, on a flat screen, you can choose to use the classic FMV video instead of characters. AND the game looks awesome! YAY! lol

I really wish it was possible to have the scene-to-scene navigation in this remake. I would totally buy it again if it had it (I had bought it and returned it after finding out).

Got VR? Get this one. Got a decent PC but no VR? Get 2014's RealMyst Masterpiece Edition. You get a whole extra age after beating the game, as well as those FMVs that age like fine wine, but even those were polished a little. Personally I prefer the original RealMyst released in 2002. Sure it doesn't look quite as good, but it was the first time I experienced a free-roaming Myst game with day/night cycle and the experience was enchanting. I also prefer the overall "vibe" of the ages, but that might just be the nostalgia glasses. I think they might eventually add Rime into the 2021 Myst, but I doubt it'll have the same feel as discovering it over two decades ago. They could remove that annoying repeating Godzilla sound though...

What happened to the Myst sons, why did they turn evil? They had good parents, or so it seems. They had everything they could ever want, and a good education. So what happened???

They turned evil because of money and power to control all ages.

Plus after Atrus’ grandmother died, he buried himself in his work and neglected his sons, which could have a huge negative effect on them.

In the channel wood age book its explaine that the natives treat humans like gods, atrus takes his sons there when they were young and let them live there for quite a while. So with atrus always gone adventuring and the kids getting literally worshipped, they grew up to think they have the right to rule over all of the ages.

@@BustedGiantThat’s my feeling too, he was more absorbed in his studies and writing his books than he was in being a part of his sons lives. Even though he was upset that they grew up to be evil, he didn’t realize that he was partly to blame.

So in the good ending you can't do anything after the audio from entering the numbers of switches? He told me about the tower rotation but i can't find any hints

I do agree that the CG versions of the characters are definitely a downgrade from the original live actors. :-/

Myst was perfect and I absolutely WILL NOT play the remake of Riven, Leave it as is.

i tried the remake. It's actually worth it, the only thing i don't like is they didn't used the actual live actors. But since this is made on unreal it's very possible someone will make a mod correcting this shortcoming other than that. Rivens remastering and environments are drop dead gorgeious and in many ways an actual upgrade from the original all in REAL TIME.
