There's no contradiction here. She isn't saying that the fire can't be named after her. She's saying that you can't name the fire by her OFFICIAL name that her superiors know about, that is in the public eye (apparently, there is some law that the story doesn't specify). And her second name, it turns out, she hasn't informed anyone, so the law isn't broken in this case, with Henry being satisfied.

I actually really liked the ending. I got that sinking feeling of disappointment too, but not because the ending is cheap/bad. Alone in the wilderness we fell for Ned's rather ridiculous plot, the paranoia of solitude making us jump to unlikely conclusions. We also built up an expectation to meet Delilah, and after all that time and the bond we built, she just left. The game started with a tragic human story, then we let our imagination run wild, and at the end it brought us back down to earth. I think it was brilliantly done.

Okay, so here is the ending basically explained. Ned's son died in a climbing accident. Him feeling that he would be accused of murdering his son, he stole the keys to the cave and began a survellience operation to make sure nobody found out. However, when he though Henry was spying on him, he did his best to cover it up, using a research station in Wapiti and making it appear like it was a government conspiracy against them. However, when he set fire to the station, the fire burnt out of control, so he decided to make the two leave, by framing them for starting the fire. When Henry began investigating, Ned basically cracked and told him the whole story, before moving. The reason we never got to see Delilah was because the developers were trying to save a message. Life is often not what you expected; we expected a big government conspiracy, and we expected to see Delilah.

That's why the ending of Firewatch is amazing in my opinion. People were expecting some grand finale, and that everything was going to be revealed. But in the end, it was just nothing, something really boring. But people forget why Henry and Delilah are here. To run away from there problems, and this job, to them, was a temporary solution to there problems. This game is really beautiful and amazing and that's why people come here to escape there problems, and the game introduces all these crazy theorys and ideas to allow the player's imagination to run wild, but then reality and real life just hits you like a truck, and that's how real life is. TL:DR: The game was trying to simulate all these amazing adventures and mysteries, and Henry's fun journey, but the ending was just the opposite. Reality. Real Life. All the problems Henry was trying to escape from, came back like a truck in the form of reality.

@@braydengirard5315 Delilah didn't play any audio. It was Ned listening in who (presumably) accidentally pressed the "talk" button while coughing, and as he was on the same chanel as them, it broadcast to Henry and Delilah, freaking them out and confirming that someone else was listening in.

Jack, the reason why Ned was following Henry is because Henry discovered the cave very early and tried to break in to it. He probably didn't want Henry to discover what's inside that's why he was listening to Delilah and Henry talk all the time because if they do discover what's inside he'll have a backup plan and pack things up, just like in the ending. It was disappointing, but it does make sense.

im like super late to this, but just wanted to throw in my 2 cents anyway about this game, i can see why it is so popular, and the story it told is one of the more thought-provoking and enlightening i've seen in a video game. this is a story about running away from your problems, and why we cant do that forever and must learn that life goes on, and we must face our issues to strive for better days. this whole thing was simply just a little story in Henry's life on a summer when he took a job as a firewatcher, in an attempt to escape from his life. his wife was struct with a terrible illness, but they were already beginning to grow distance before that, his dog passed away, and since he is looking at job offers, he's probably been struggling to stay employed and face financial issues too. people around him also start losing respect for him, thinking he is an asshole for putting his wife in a home, he no longer talk to his friends, he was lonely, stressed, and wanted to just... call it in. and so he took the job as a firewatcher, even though he's really shouldnt be and spend more time with his wife. when he start to encounter some strange things, plus the paranoia of being alone in the wilderness, he started conducting this whole idea of a conspiracy theory of the government spying on him, or maybe some spooky ghost stuffs going on in the forest, or maybe aliens. he convinced himself that is true and sub-consciously that is also what he wanted to be true, he wanted his life to be something different than what it is, something more thrilling and exciting, so he can forget about all the other things that keep him awake at night. he wanted to escape, he wanted to just stand far away, observing the fire, but not actually do anything about it. a Firewatcher's job is simply to look out for potential fire hazard and put a stop to it, but when a fire already broke out, their job is to call the authorities to handle it, not actually doing anything to put it out. thats what Henry wanted, to just look at the fire that is his life from afar, and let it burn. but thats not how life works, in the end, the mysteries that he conducted in his mind were merely that, his imagination. there were times in this game when i felt genuinely spooked out while Henry is hiking, even though this is not a horror game and nothing horrific ever happened either, cause i bought into the little imaginary tale Henry made up, while the truth is actually a lot simpler. its the same reason why there are a lot of empty spaces on a frame in horror movies, those spaces are there to let our brain do the spooking for the movie, whatever it is our brain imagine could be happening is a lot scarier than what the movie can actually do. the fear of the unknown. and in a strange way it is similar to the source of our social anxiety and the problems we face in our lives. a lot of time, we stress ourselves out imagining what could be, rather than what actually is. my wife dont love me, my friends hate me, im a failure, etc... and the solution that we cant help but to come to is to run away, like Henry did. but no matter how much you try, life wont move on without you, you have to face it, be brave and stay positive. Henry is not alone, everyone is struggling in some form and is looking for a way out for themselves. the teens he encountered that have gone missing, they werent kidnapped by aliens or killed by a mass murderer, they're just angsty teenager running away from THEIR lives. Delilah have issues in her relationship and want to run away, she also have problem with alcohol, always try to drink her problems away. the dad who was so distraught by the accident that happened to his son, he took the extreme route and decide to run away from the whole world, never to return. we all want to run away sometimes, but its never going to last forever, reality will come back for us eventually, and its best that we face it head on. this game spoke to me on a very deep spiritual level, maybe because i have also been trying to run away from something in my life that i relate and understood it so much. like i said from the start, Firewatch was an enlightening experience.

I think the game is less about a story in itself, and more about life. Like saying that there will always be coincidences, always be mysteries, and that explanations are often simple and disappointing. Sometimes, things are not as exciting as you wish. Sometimes, there's no conspiracy, only a dead kid in a cave and a firewatch that will forever feel guilty for not reporting a father who brought his kid with him to the lookout. And remember that this is not the story of you looking out for fires, this is the story of Henry escaping from his wife's dementia. If you think about it, Ned did exactly what Henry is doing. Instead of confronting his son's death, he ran away, hiding it in a cave.

I disagree. I feel as though the devs should've made all of what you said much clearer as the point of the game, if it was the point. To have an intention is one thing, but perhaps if the majority of players didn't understand what the message of the ending was, that's a problem. SPOILERS: I didn't dislike the ending out of its simplicity, or merely because it was based out of a series of coincidences. If anyone found a tent ransacked, phone line cut, their cabin broken into and that someone was listening in on their calls, of course they would freak out. Who wouldn't? The explanation wasn't 'innocent' or 'simple'; there was foul play at work, Ned was deliberately trying to scare you off. I feel I didn't like the ending for a couple of reasons: 1. The explanation revolves around Ned and Brian, two people whom I had little interest in beforehand. 2. The revelation is handed to you on a silver platter, literally explained for you, and you can't do anything to change the future. You can't catch Ned; in fact, nothing has really changed, except that now you know what happened. If the explanation had been, for instance, that a serial killer had been lurking in the forest, at least there may be further stakes (after the explanation) of you having to still escape the killer, possibly. I'm not saying that a serial killer explanation would've necessarily been better, but there would be potential for being able to change things and have an impact after the revelation. I didn't mind not seeing Delilah, but regarding your suggestion on the meaning of the ending being that there will always be mysteries and disappointing explanations, I also disagree personally. I don't think that this idea of mysteries always having disappointing endings is linked much to the actual characters, or their backstories. For instance, how is Julia's story relevant to 'mysteries are often disappointing'? I see the connection between Henry and Ned both fleeing from things, but I don't think that Julia's story is a 'mystery' with a 'disappointing explanation' in the same way that Ned's is. Explanations of the ending have often tried to say that the game isn't really about the mystery, which I also disagree with. It makes up just about all of what you do in the forest, and the majority of what you talk about with D is the mystery. More personal small talk often felt sidelined to me.
@NeroCM
@NeroCM 5 жыл бұрын
@@kerryperichicken6244 I think you're still just trying to find more in it than there actually is. You still feel cheated. you still have this opinion of "Why didn't what I did matter more?" You're confronted with your own insignificance relatively to the events and are disappointed. Again, this is life. Sometimes a dead kid in a cave is just a dead kid in a cave. There is no serial killer, there is no real mystery, there's no true reason. It just happened, and you can't do anything about it and it sucks and you're sad and frustrated because then what was the point? Why did Henry's wife get dementia? In most games and movies, this would become the reason for everything. henry would go on some huge journey and find some deep realization or accomplish some huge accomplishment. But this is not most games and movies. This is a game about life. And in real life there is no reason for her condition. it just happened and Henry has to deal with it. How did Brian die? Why did Ned hide it? There are actual movies with something similar for a setting. But the truth is that there's no deeper meaning. Brian is dead, probably because his father pushed too hard. Ned hid the fact, maybe out of shame. The game isn't about the mystery. it never has been. It's you (you as in player, not you you) that wants for it to be about the mystery. Because you need a meaning behind it were in truth there is none. And to be honest, the fact that after all this time people still cannot accept it is proof of how well the game was made.
@sarahshea1337

Honestly, I really liked the ending because it reminds you that the game is meant to reflect real life. It's not some fantasy game with outrageous findings and plot points, it's just real from start to finish. Your relationship with Julia isn't perfect, her spiral into dementia, and the choices Henry has to make about his wife's care are all incredibly realistic and dug up a lot of memories I have with handling family members who went through that same process. They ground you in that reality at the very start, and then start gently pulling you away from that and allowing your imagination to start to wander with the incredible dream-like visuals and copious amounts of open space to explore however you please. Then they start to present you with little storylines to run with as your imagination starts to run. What happened to the girls at the lake? Where did Ned and Brian go? Who was up on the cliff? Where happened at the campsite? What is the story of the two rangers writing each other and leaving behind letters for one another? Who is watching you, and why? The list of unanswered questions grows longer and longer, and as you become more and more immersed in this game you start trying to piece together your own answers in lieu of the story's purposeful lack of them, just as Henry would be while alone in the wilderness with only a faceless woman on a radio to talk to. The game plays on it's peaceful, understated soundtrack so that you wait for those little bits of dialogue with Delilah to fill the quiet. We're so used to games filling every last second with engaging soundscapes that when we're only left with the sound of our footsteps and nature we start to yearn for something, anything to audibly interact with, especially as the list of question grows and tensions rise. Hence, why we as the audience grow so attached to Delilah. We're lonely, just as lonely as Henry is, and we end up rapidly developing a connection to her witty demeanor and her uniquely human character because of how desperate we become to interact with someone (whether we know it or not!). It's why we're so let down when we cant see her at the end. We feel as if we've really made a friend by the end so when we don't get the payoff of seeing her like we feel we deserve, it's disappointing: and that's the point. There was no big government conspiracy, nothing outrageously bad happened to the girls, we aren't being dragged away in handcuffs; all we have is a boy who died years ago, whom we hardly knew, and his dad who had been creating this whole ruse to try and scare us off his path. It brings us back to that reality from the beginning of the game. Nothing that our imaginations came up with during the course of the game would have actually happened in real life, and we're lucky (in a sense) that we even got as much as we did with Ned Goodwin's ploy to stop us. It was made to disappoint us at the very end to remind us that the game was, as much as it could be, real life. We have to return to our wife at the end of the summer, Delilah has to deal with the consequences of her actions for not reporting Brian's presence in the Two Forks tower, and there's nothing we can do to change that. Life goes on, things are rarely as exciting as they seem, and we don't always get what we believe we deserve. I loved the ending because it grounded this game in reality, it's a realistic depiction of life. I can understand why some people wouldn't like that if they wandered into the game for a beautiful wilderness escape, or for a thrilling mystery in the forest, but if you can stand back and appreciate the story for what it was meant to be, the ending feels a lot more fulfilling.

I'm not reading all that shit, but my ass is chapped from all these excuses about how it's "realistic" to have a lame disappointing ending.
@promontorium

Also this game wasn't remotely realistic. The idea that Ned would just decide to live in the forest for 2 years is not realistic. The part where he can scrounge up hundreds of thousands of dollars in high tech equipment to pull of a completely pointless ruse to hide his son's dead body is fucking nutty nonsense absurdity.

@@promontorium Are you stupid or something? It's very obvious that the equipment was for watching animals and checking the conditions, and it was partially funded by a university and partially funded by the military. This is completely realistic, as the military and universities really had facilities like that, during this period of time. Ned had notes about how he was living in the facility while no one was there and had been borrowing equipment. Also, it's completely realistic. Special Forces can live in forests for whole decades, easily.

I know it’s been so long since this upload but I love coming back to it lol, I love the ending of this series because it’s just the way things are sometimes- they thought there was something bigger going on when in reality it was a lot less of a big deal than they thought, and it turned out to just be the way that Ned was coping with the loss of his son Honestly the way this whole game plays out was beautiful and I will always enjoy watching play-throughs of it ^__^

I like how jack made a joke about the song hey Delilah in the first episode. But in the ending of this video he says Delilah should make crossword puzzles in New York City. Thus staying true to the song “hey there Delilah, what’s it like in New York city”

I feel like the "let down" (for lack of a better word) of the ending is kind of purposeful and those who get it, get it, and those that don't, don't. There's something about this kind of ending that is very...sobering? It doesn't give you what you want in the end. You want the big monsters and the conspiracy theories. You want Hank to end up with Delilah in some capacity. And it doesn't give you that and I think that was very intentional. It wasn't about monsters or conspiracies. It was about "real" people. And in real life you don't always get the happy ending or the one with the most drama/shock.
