At about 17 minutes in, narration mentions a star of 1.1 solar masses will go supernova? Wont it just expand into a planetary nebula leaving behind a white dwarf? Earlier it was said that a blue star almost 2x our star's mass will supernova and leave behind a white dwarf. Won't a supernova leave behind a neutron star?
@Soulzzzzz

if its the mass of our sun white dwarf, if its the mass of 100~ suns neutron star, if its the mass of 1000+ suns black hole
@debrakleid5752
@debrakleid5752 2 жыл бұрын
He was incorrect in the video. A star needs to be 8-12 times the mass of the sun to go supernova. Arcturus isn’t big enough at only 10% more mass than the sun. And when a star does go supernova they either turn into neutron stars or black holes. Not a white dwarf.
@bammerson
@bammerson Жыл бұрын
yeah don’t forget that the narrator is just some dude who reads someone’s else’s script (most likely). so yeah that whole thing about our sun being able to go “supernova” kinda confirmed to me that this dude has no idea what he’s talking about and just reads from a script lolz
@hughstan1
@hughstan1 Жыл бұрын
The Chandra limit is 4x the solar mass to super nova- anything less will just shed into planetary nebula leaving a white dwarf unless it has a companion to siphon material from onto the White dwarf then it will type 2 into a planetary mist. Brightest one

Just a quick correction at 16:45. You say Arcturis will go supernova relatively soon in astronomical terms, yet, at 90% the mass of the sun, Arcturis will not go Supernova. You seem to be aware of this as you mention it simply shedding its outer layers to become a planetary nebula, yet the worst supernova was nonetheless mentioned in such a way as to expect a singular massive explosive event. Just wanted to point that out so your information is as accurate as possible. Everything else is fantastic.

33:35 - Kepler 70b - "The celestial object's orbital period is 345 minutes. In other words a day here is less than six hours long." I believe you meant to say "a YEAR here is less than six hours long", otherwise you would be talking about rotational period, but this object probably doesn't have days since it would almost certainly be tidally locked with one side being forever in daylight and the other in perpetual night.

I noticed other things that were in accurate as well. Arcturus Star won’t go supernova into a white dwarf. It’s not massive enough. It only has 10% more mass than the sun. To go supernova it needs to be 8-12 times the mass of the sun and when a star does go supernova it turns into a neutron star or black hole. Not a white dwarf like the video said. He also mentioned the Alrair star. It’s Altair not Alrair.

Very informative. However, a point of criticism, if I may: The commentary is peculiar: whilst he annunciates well, the pronunciation is sometimes odd with unusual emphasis on unexpected syllables, e.g. "parSECS"; "kiloparSECS" and running words together with highly defined, hard consonants, e.g. "…sen Tout of shape"; "…jet Slike tha Twant Steeper study", "…compac Tobject", "…gradually suck Tin", etc, requiring the occasional replay of phrases. Apart from this, the video is outstanding! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
