I suspect that in trying to overtake her friends, she suffered a medical emergency, and the impairment and embarrassment from such caused her to leave the trail at a point where her friends couldn’t find her.

I enjoy these stories but sometimes the language is too flowery and overwhelming. I would suggest not being so over the top in description just get to it. I always think certain people are summoned telepathically by something in the woods - where people urgently need to get to whatever is calling them in their mind.
