Now that we know that it is real, can the home made CB from 1960 come back to life? Did Heathkit lift this Idea from Don Stoner's Article to create the famous Lunchbox series in 1961? Oh I love Supperregens!

The TX Section came up pretty cleanly. 4 Caps had to be changed out including the big electrolytic. I improved grounding and added 2 bypass caps around the circuit - one was missing. The receiver was tricky. It did not want to tune below 27 MHz and kept stopping due to suck out. The fix was making my own Choke for the cathode that did not self resonate in band. And the Trimmer was frozen and shorted. I had to replace the volume pot. For the TX I added a microphone connector, coupling cap and RF bypass cap and a Mike Gain Trimmer. So now it is ready for on air action.

👍 Nice work and thanks for video. Yes, HF condx horrible recently after geomagnetic storm. On the upside, the aurora borealis display that we saw in the UK was amazing.

Great job Mike! Nice to see an old piece of handbuilt gear brought-up, and not just scrapped for the components. 73...

I dreamed of making a CB back in the mid 70's when I was in 8th grade. I made as far as forming the metal chassis in shop class. I also had the Heathkit Jr. DELUXE ELECTRONIC WORKSHOP 35 that started my electronics career.

Thanks for the CB history. First I heard of that there were more CB'ers than Hams at a point in history. If the FCC put more regulations on CB'ers in the the '60s, why in the '70's most CB'ers were not paying much attention to the rules. I guess that's why today the FCC dropped the license requirements.

I loved seeing this Mike and thanks so much for doing it. This project filled in a gap in my CB history knowledge. I guess most people were not aware of the very early days of CB. Certainly in the UK, CB wasn't a generally known subject till all transistor and 40 channels in the 70's, when sunspot cycle 21 took off and we Brits broke the law with our American CBs. I got caught and had my rig confiscated... but that's another story.

I seem to recall that CB started with 20 channels and was later bumped up to 40. My only exposure to CB was in the early 70s working for a crop dusting outfit. Those consumer grade radios lasted about a year before breaking and eventually we gave up and went back to hand signals like God intended.

Great Video and Information. The Transceiver is still based in fundamental RF principles. I'll give you extra credit for investing the the time to research the origin of the design. Your explanation of the circuit is helping me learn about Tube technology. Keep Teaching !!!! Thank You.

always nice to see what you are doing there! To be honest, I thought you would go further and make a QSO with this device? also, I hope you once want to do something with the pirate band on SW, around 6300KHz in AM modes (in smaller sizes, but they are still there!) healthy and friendly greetings from the Netherlands! I remember 27055 kHz was the truckies channel here in Australia and 27085 was the call channel on AM. I always remember hearing the Americans all the way over here and geez some of em speak pretty funny. When I first saw stoners radio I thought of something else.

Mike: Thanks for dispelling my doubts about CB homebrewers (at least in the early days). And for pointing out why the tubes won't fall out of the upside down transceiver. But how do you think the builder/driver powered this thing? 73 Bill N2CQR

My guess is a clone of the Heath vibrator supply used with the lunchboxes. Most tube CBs of that era used vibrator choppers.

I generally can throw them back, since I was fly fishing, but early season, kept 1. It's a sport to me. Very simple, butter or bacon fat, salt pepper, wrap in foil, right on grill.
