Thank you for the great video. I lived in a small provincial city in Japan in the 1960s and 1970s. I wanted to build my own radio back then, but the electronic parts store in my town only had those slow germanium transistors. I have memories of wanting those high performance 2SC372 and 2SC373 used in magazine articles.

The 88mH chokes were inserted into each wire of the underground telephone line at 2000 yard intervals. This was done to counteract the capacitance between the wires and obtain the 3kHz or so bandwidth required for telephone speech. The bandwidth could be improved by inserting 44mH chokes at 1000yard intervals. This "loading" as it was called was used in multi-pair telephone cables. Overhead telephone wires on poles with arms and insulators had a very wide bandwidth and comparatively low losses as long as the insulation resistance could be maintained at a high value. Something very similar was used as antenna feeders at short-wave transmitting stations.

Thank you so much for taking the time to tell the story of the Unelco I got my first receiver on Christmas at 8-9, an SR-22R and an isolation transformer. I can't remember anything about the Unelco very interesting and your review of the circuit peaked my interest. WW-II Military surplus was my godsend in those days.

This reminds me of the transistor BC, SW tuner board assembly, I bought back in the later '60s from Lafayette. All it needed was to hook up a 9v battery and an audio amplifier to have a 2 band AM radio.

Phenolic PCB's, with either tubes or transistors, my teenage years. I remember when transistor radios would be sold with a couple of dead transistors soldered to the bd so they could call a 7 transistor radio a "9 transistor" radio.

I got one of these for Christmas as a kid. I added an power supply (filter caps stuffed into the battery compartment), signal-strength meter (poked around with my Olsson's VOM until I found the AGC signal), and a trimmer with a Radioshack vernier dial for the oscillator. It was a good learning experience, although I was still envious of my best friend whose family had an SB-310.

Excellent, Mike! I'm glad I caught this series. Very similar to my Kenwood TS-830S. I am psyching myself up to do an alignment and put it on the air after not doing anything with it for 5 years while I pursued other interests. Probably won't need much work other than replacing the caps as it is in almost pristine condition. I would really like to see you do an alignment on an 830S as I don't want to do it "alone", given all the high voltages present. Your help and knowledge would be greatly appreciated!

Did something similar with my 10 ft pelican .i put a standard rod mount in just behind my left shoulder turned in such away the rod hangs out bound and forward .just so i can see the tip by looking to my left and in easy reach if i have to grab it .good for trolling an doesn’t interfere with paddling ,and is much cheaper than a fishing kayak.caught a large mouth bass july 4th weekend @grand lake stream ME works well.

I bought one of those Archer Space Patrol base stations in the early 70's. I remember it was almost $30. The Radio Shack was just a block from my house. I had to call my dad at work to get his OK to buy it as it was from my earnings. My friend carried the batteries and I carried the radio home. Finally got my ham ticket in 1984. I also got a 100 in one Science Fair kit for Christmas one year. I had the one tube AM P-Box kit also.

My Dad and I built a Radio Shack P-box code oscillator together in the early 1970's. He gave me a clapped out Halacrafters S-40 and check book register to use as a log. My grandparents bought me a transistor radio for Christmas 1970; I spent many nights listening to Mystery Theater with the radio under my pillow. And, I was into crystal radios, fortunately we lived across the mississippi river from WCCO's 50K watt transmitter. My wife and kids got me the radio shack crystal radio Christmas 1993. It still sits on my radio shack desk running 24/7/365! and, I sent signal reports to San Francisco and Wainwright, Alberta with that set -ha. Thanks for the great video! AA0QZ

I've only come in contact with radios with a transformer. Sometimes there are either capacitors or resistors or both on the AC line to ground. They are simply not needed, and I remove them. I then replace the 2-prong line cord with a 3-prong line cord and ground the chassis. No tickle, no surprises, no issues.
@MIKROWAVE1
@MIKROWAVE1 10 күн бұрын
That removes the cap breakdown issue, but this receiver is known to have real issues with line noise pickup, so the caps are required.
