Mamlambo Fossils

Жыл бұрын

This is a combination of two days of fossil hunting where I went to go check out a Miocene / Pliocene area here in New Zealand. I found a good variety of fossils including some whale / cetacean fossils, crabs, bryozoan, shells and a heap more!
I also received the most amazing artwork from one of the schools I visited recently and I share that later in the video.

Fantastic that you are introducing fossils to the school kids they were obviously impressed looking at the lovely notes that they sent you. I'm 65 and was interested in dinosaurs and fossils from a very early age in primary school, I would have been over the moon if someone like yourself had visited our school. Keep up the brilliant work and I can't wait to see what bones are in that latest find

At 4:35 just after you said "There's another one", I was congratulating myself on having spotted it too - but then you picked up a different stone ! Mine is at about 3:00 o'clock 2/3 of the way out from the centre of the screen. A browner rock surrounded on left and top sides by white pebbles. I think we are looking at the top/back of the carapace and you can see the rings of two of the back legs eroding out of the rock on the right hand side ! You will have to go back for it !

Another wonderful video can’t wait to see the scan images. It’s great that you are teaching children about fossils. Where I lived in Alberta, Canada the oils companies found so many dinosaurs fossils in the oil sands but unfortunately during junior and high school none of these finds were really mentioned unless in the news. I would have loved it if an Palaeontologist would have visited the schools I went to.

It's so great to see all these fossils of crabs! I live near a mountain that has sea fossils in places. When I was a child I was fascinated that fossils of the sea would be up on a mountain. But of course this whole area was under the sea before it was pushed up into a mountain. My father found a fossilized clam there and cut it open, and there were crystals inside. He said they were salt or something else water-soluble, because they melted soon after he opened it. Have you ever seen crystals inside a fossil? I just found your channel so maybe you'v'e already answered that. I'll check out your other videos and subscribe!

@@MamlamboFossils actually, that's really unhelpful. It's just a few interesting rocks from the ground, not Insitu from a bed, I've found and want to practice on. If I find anything of note, after checking the fossil database, I'll go back n do it properly. Are YOU a geologist? Or an avid fossil hunter. I did most of my degree 20yrs ago, before life got in the way. The guy in Palmy who discovered the giant penguin is an unqualified expert. I was hoping for an answer to what is B72... If u won't be helpful I'll track him down.

Anyone else notice that all these fossils from the beach in his videos are in very similar SEDMENTARY rock and range, in kinds, from penguins to reptiles to large extinct amphibians??? Could they have all been made into fossils VERY close to in time?

@MamlamboFossils 9 ай бұрын
No, there are millions of years between these rocks, they have just eroded out of the cliff and accumulated in some areas
