The fact that 6 teenage children could go missing all at once and it's somehow not a big story is in itself a very bizarre and suspicious thing.

Hi! My dad worked in the regional police force during this disappearance. It was one of those cases he argued about with his superiors because he didn’t like how they had handled it. Truthfully.. they were more worried with abusing a pregnant woman on the force (and covering it up) and cheating on exams to get high paying government officials jobs to really do a proper investigation. That’s all I can say!

I don’t think they planned to leave even though Michael gave his mom the necklace. I’ve read a lot of stories of people saying goodbye right before they died unexpectedly. My husband died with no sign of it coming on the night. Our last conversation was the two of us goofing on each other before I went to bed. He stopped me though and said “just in case one of us dies In our sleep, I love you.” I told him I loved him too. He had no way of knowing those would be our last words but sometimes I think our inner self have an inkling of what’s to come.

6:13 It’s hard for me to fathom why a case with 6 missing teenage boys did *not* become hugely publicized. It’s the kind of story the media usually loves and it could have been highly beneficial in this case, had these young mens’ story made it past their local news.

Remember that case of the two teen boys in the 80s who were left on train tracks and the death was claimed to be suicide? And it's suspected that local law enforcement was in cahoots with drug rings and the boys saw a drug deal and that's the most likely reason they were killed? This case reminds me of it. Could be these young men witnessed something they shouldn't have, got killed, and law enforcement wants it to stay buried.

I was born in Ajax and lived in Pickering my entire childhood, these boys went missing shortly before my second birthday yet growing up I knew of the story, what confuses me is how I’ve yet to meet anyone outside of the city who has heard of the case. I now live on the other side of Toronto but not far, and nobody has heard of it. It’s saddening. Chad Smith’s mother still posts about the case on Facebook looking for answers, she is still desperately broken by not knowing what happened to her child or his friends. I truly hope closure is coming sooner rather than later, the poor families. I was around the age of Jay’s baby when he went missing so to know his child is still out there without any explanation as to where his father went breaks my heart. The whole story deserves so much more attention, I really appreciate you doing so.

If he turns up missing I’m going to potentially have to convince law that he is, then await search warrants to access his records ect. Nooooo, not gonna. When I heard that the boat was considered unsinkable my first thought was: there’s a challenge for 6 drunk kids. Maybe they were more successful than anticipated? I don’t know about Lake Ontario but I seem to remember that some of the Great Lakes don’t “give their bodies back” aka they’re too cold for bodies to decompose and float.
@nerdisaur

Seldarius I’m not sure how likely that is for Lake Ontario, a lot of drowning victims and bodies dumped in the lake turn up downriver in Ottawa where they wash up in the shallows

Lake Ontario is fairly warm by comparison to Huron and Superior. We’re a lot more southern, but there’s a good chance that they could have fallen victim to lake life (there’s some nasty creatures in the Great Lakes), or trapped within the wreck of a boat. It would be cold though, but not the same sort of cold that Huron and Superior has. This is something I don’t think we’ll ever know the answer too, I’m afraid.
@allisonwilliams4536

Torontonian here (Pickering is part of the Greater Toronto Area). The water in Lake Ontario is pretty cold (even in summer, the water is FREEZING) mostly because a) Lake Ontario is very deep, average depth is about 86 m and I believe the deepest part is somewhere around 240 m. And the west side of the lake (where Toronto and Pickering are) is much deeper than the east side. So basically all those extra cubic metres of depth make it very hard for sunlight to warm the water. and b) Lake Ontario is rarely calm. So the top of layer of water (which is usually the warmest) is constantly being disturbed by wind. Think of it as someone constantly shaking a bottle of vinaigrette. Past 20 m of depth, the water is always cold (about 0-5 C, possibly below freezing). Those first 20 m of warm water are like the oil on top of vinegar. When you give it a shake (in the case of Lake Ontario, this would be the near constant winds), the two mix. So the normally separated cold water mixes with the warm water. If the winds are strong enough, then the top layer of warm water can disappear completely and leave the water constantly cold. That being said, we do occasionally get bodies that wash up on the shores of Lake Ontario in the Greater Toronto Area. Could maybe be something to do with the currents and the wind??? (I'm not a climate scientist, I actually kinda suck at science but my father explained this to me when I was a kid and I asked why I couldn't swim by our house in Toronto but I could swim by my aunt's place in Kingston). Thank you for attending my TED Talk.

@@keljells one of the nastiest things we have in Lake Ontario is lampreys. They're an invasive species of eel. Rings of teeth, really gross looking. The American eel also lives in the lake. Some fish (trout, some species of salmon have been introduced). The usual water birds. It is the most polluted of the lakes though. I remember growing up that we'd joke about mutated fish living in the lake.

This case REEKS of a coverup. The investigator being bumped around and -- in my opinion -- being lied to throughout the entirety of the investigation makes my skin crawl. They're definitely covering up something that happened. Either some of the local police or the OPP were involved and decided to brush everything under the rug. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll ever know what truly happened due to all of the secrecy and redacted information. A police force would only go this far to protect their own. A little theory I have and that a lot of other people in the comments seem to as well, is that the boys came across something that they shouldn't have. Something like the local police helping to smuggle drugs or help out known criminals in the area, as it was late at night and in an area with easy access to water (a known way to smuggle drugs is through late night boat trips) and there weren't going to be many people around. Then the police -- and whoever else were involved -- decided that it would be best to get rid of the boys so they wouldn't get caught by the OPP. They might have known the boys from around town and thought that they were going to be easy to get rid of. The police could have also taken the imitation Boston whaler and the water bike from the marina so they would have an explanation for the disappearances. I don't really have any other explanation for all of the redacted information, secrecy, and the PI getting the runaround. I really hope that it isn't true but it's one of the few theories that I find myself leaning towards.

@@spideysense1847 Agreed, but the fact that no bodies or parts of "unsinkable" craft appeared is strange (apart from the suspicious fuel tank). The "pedalo" is incongruous... until now, I thought it was a conventional pedal-boat, but the one pictured is only something one would use in warm summer weather, not when it's freezing cold. A powered Boston Whaler type of boat and a Pedalo make a strange combination, unless the Pedalo was used to tow the "whaler" outside the bay entrance lights so as to not make noise (presumably oars were not in the "Whaler"). I did see, some weeks or months later, police divers working in the vicinity of the channel entrance as I sailed my own boat there. Also, whatever happened at the marina didn't unduly wake up anybody (myself included, a couple of wharves over). Now, I should note that even if somebody woke up, they probably would not see anything unless they got dressed and went outside, because most boats were covered for the winter in translucent, not clearly transparent, plastic. Few boats in those days had topside ports (windows), and the superstructure windows would be behind the plastic covers.

I live in North Bay, ON. We def have a serial killer that targets young men. Because we are so northern, a lot of the mysterious deaths are attributed to exposure, but my gut and living here for 36 years, says it is a pattern that follows that of a serial killer.

I lived right there,, grew up with all 6 of those boys.. The ball was dropped by the DRPS no question at all.. Maybe if they didn't wait 72 hrs before looking for them, this would have ended a little differently.. I find it hard to belive they can find 1 man, hiding in a crack in the wall, burried deep in the side of a mountain. BUT can't find 6 boys, a boat, water trike on a single body of water?.. I hate this case, It haunts me every year. I 🙏 pray, 1 day the families can finally find some closer.

So Canadian here that has lived in both pickering and Niagara Falls. The rumour that I heard was that one of the guards at the nuclear power plant shot them as they were trying to climb over a fence and it was being hidden by the police. The nuclear power plant is less than a 10 minute walk Al on the secluded walkway from the marina. This pathway is a paved nature walk that connects all of the major cities in Durham region that border Lake Ontario. Walking along it brings you very close and at times within feet of the fence lining the perimeter of the nuclear power plant. On this fence they have sigs that cautioned that any trespassers will be shot on sight.

Also, anyone who is working with childern, seniors or those with disabilities have to go through vulnerable sector screening ( vss) which is like a criminal record check but is way more in depth. It includes all convictions, arrests, allegations or suspicions that have been levied against you. In order to pass it you cannot have violent crimes on your record or have, convictions or allegations of crimes against a vulnerable populations. You can pass a VSS with a criminal record but it also allows your employer to see your entire criminal record.

Stephanie Harlowe My family lives in this area and I’ve visited many times in 27 years. I’ve grown up hearing stories about police misconduct, brutality and corruption within the force regarding the Durham regional PD. There’s a place on Lake Ontario about 45 or so minutes drive away from Frenchman’s Bay marina called Cherry beach Express/Clarke Beach Park that was largely believed to be a place for police to brutally beat suspected perps. Some people have written it off as an urban legend, but my Uncle, God parents and even my 70 year old Toronto-born Mother have shared stories with me many of which happened in the late 70’s- mid 80’s. “There is at least one famous case. A homeless man named Thomas Kerr accused several police officers of taking him to Cherry Beach and beating him, in 1996. In 2003, he settled with Toronto Police for a reported $750,000.” Source: torontoist.com/2012/10/toronto-urban-legends-cherry-beach-express/ I’m not saying that this is related, or has anything to do with the missing boys but I just want to highlight the potential corruption and secrecy that the PD’s in Toronto regions seem to hold. I believe the Police has either completely failed to conduct a proper investigation, that they know more than they’re saying or that they’re involved in some way and have facilitated a coverup. Whatever happened, it’s time for some answers. Thank you again for another great video. 💛

They went to the marina to get the hell out of dodge and sank in the boat the cops wouldn’t look at. And why is this covered up? The creepy thing about the Great lakes is that their temperature is perfect for preserving bodies. They don't really decompose because the water is so cold. I believe, and this is just my opinion, that they may have been taken by either pirates or sex traffickers or something like that. Pirates on the waters is a real problem and they rob vessels then kill the witnesses. This is more so on ocean waters but it does happen on other bodies of water.The sex trafficking I thought was more likely but after hearing of the police finding a body, I figured they either fought back or it was pirates. The fact that the body was found where it was makes me lean more towards sex traffickers since not all bodies were found. I also believe the police were aware of something because they wouldn't investigate certain things, like the pants that were found. There was just too many mistakes and negligence and cover ups. Again, this is just my opinion. I am a survivor of sex trafficking so I know a lot on this subject. I still pray for these angels and their families and so happy that they have never given up. Omg, I had forgotten about this until now! My husband and I had taken our kids to Niagara Falls a month after this happened. We are from Ohio but have always stayed on the Canadian side while vacationing there. (It's honestly much nicer and cleaner. 🤷) We went further into Toronto and Ontario to show the kids around. I was pregnant with our third child at the time and wasn't feeling well. I ended up staying behind at the hotel while my husband took our two kids out sightseeing. I vividly remember going out to the pool to relax and a lady struck up a conversation with me. She mentioned the missing teens and was related to one of them by marriage. (I believe she said it was her husband's nephew that was one of the boys missing. I don't remember which one, though.) There were several of us at the hotel talking about it and I remember how sad and baffling it was. At the time everyone was dumbfounded because it just seemed as if the boys vanished into thin air. Wow, 26 years ago and still nothing.😔I hate to say it but it honestly sounds like a nefarious cover-up.

I know I heard of a situation where a guy went missing and he was searched for and not found and it was 30-40 years later that a young guy was at a boat ramp and happened to see a car submerged quite close to the boat ramp and they found the guys remains in it, he’d swerved and run into the water that night he went missing. So it’s amazing how people can go missing for so long even being searched for when they end up being mere meters from where people are all the time.

That sounds similar to one I seen recently. It was someone on google maps that seen what looked like a car in a man made lake behind a subdivision. It turned out to be a missing man from 20 plus years earlier. Before all the construction is was a back road and they think due to bad weather he swerved and ended up in the lake. He was only about 10ft below the surface all this time. Also recently a scuba diver I follow named Jared (Adventures with purpose) pulled a car from his local river and it turned to out to have the remains from a 12yr old unsolved missing person. The family assumed he left the country and started over in Amsterdam (he had mental issues). Its been so scary to see just how many cars/trucks are dumped in rivers etc. Apparently alot are from insurance scams but there is the few that get there for other reasons.

Great job on this case Stephanie! I’m surprised that I’d never heard of it before. I'm American but I've lived in South Korea for two years and this case reminds me of one of Korea's most famous unsolved cases. It's called the 개구리소년(Frog Boys) case. I'm not 100 percent on all the details but the basics of the case are that in 1991 in a small-ish village in Daegu, South Korea, a group of 5 young boys went out to a nearby mountain to catch frogs. The boys never came home. There were many searches done for them but they never found them. About 10 years later someone found their bodies buried in a mass grave and called police. The police first told the parents that the kids died of natural causes but obviously no one was buying that so the parents and the public demanded a full investigation. Eventually the police admitted that the kids died from blunt force trauma. A lot of people believe that this is a cover up and the military had something to do with the boys’ murders. When you started mentioning the specifics of the Lost Boys case my immediate reaction was that this was a case of the boys being in the wrong place at the wrong time and maybe witnessing some drug running or something like that. It’s possible that the police were involved in the drug running and there is some sort of cover up but it’s also possible that they were just painfully incompetent. Either way I think that media attention and public pressure might be the only way to get answers here. In Korea the Frog Boys case is super famous, there have even been movies and songs about it, and public pressure forced at least somewhat of a reinvestigation so I hope that this case can gain some attention to force the Canadian police to reinvestigate as well. It seems like the perfect case for one of those ID Discovery limited series or a podcast like Serial.

This issue is Lake Ontario can bring you to US or CA. So these boys may of very been well been killed by drug dealers….or they couldve simply died due to an accident, ran into a serial killer, got taken by sex traffickers or literally ANYTHING. Back to my original point about Lake Ontario being a body of water between northern US and CA; there are a bunch of different police departments and LE agencies that have jurisdictions in certain areas around the lake as well as a couple who patrol the lake itself. It’s very hard to keep a case from going cold when they aren’t sure what crime happened, if any, or where the crime/accident happened. It’s not only between different jurisdictions in once country but two, adding to the difficulty of coordinating an effort via a task force with a federal agency and a bunch of surrounding cities/towns/states (provinces in Canada) departments.

Sometimes I get the feeling that it isn't necessarily that the police are involved in the cover-up because they were involved in the crime or protecting someone who committed the crime but rather it is a cover up of the total lack of professionalism put forth by the police because they were lazy and negligent. It strikes me that something horrible happened to these boys and the police botched the investigation so badly they don't want to admit their failure. They will continue to deny, redact, and alter evidence or facts to confuse the case even more. @@holmesla0319 That's sad stuff. I'm convinced that both sets of remains found in that dam belonged to two of the boys. It gets into tricky territory, because at the time, the dam was owned by the Provincial government; Ontario Hydro to be precise, and it uses the energy of the Niagara River on its way over the falls to supply power to a large part of the province that isn't supplied by the power plants in Pickering. I have no idea if all this is somehow related to the government itself, but it's an interesting coincidence, and it may have something to do with why all the documentation was such a mess. Around that time, Ontario Premier Mike Harris was attempting to privatise our electricity, and bureaucratic snafus and red tape were plentiful. If information and documents have gone astray then it could be standard issue government ineptitude, as exists everywhere, or it could be something else. Who knows?

I remember going canoeing in 40 degree weather with some friends. I was drinking super heavily when I tipped my canoe. sobered me up real fast but my body completely seized up. Fortunately my friends were there for me. I'm not familiar with lake Ontario but I know Lake Michigan and Superior show no mercy year round.

After hearing this case, I strongly feel the met with foul play! The odds of 6 friends going missing with no trace are very slim. The did not just drown, sounds like they were murdered.

Hmmm, would it be possible that some sort of accident happened to some of the boys, the others freaked out thinking they would get in trouble, covered it up and then disappeared? Although that may be way to hard to pull off for a group of teenagers. 🤔

not as hard as you may think unfortunately. Considering where they were there could've been an accident on the lake several of the boys died, the rest panicked hid there bodies in the lake, and undercover of the rest if the early morning went across to new York and started new lives, under new names and identities. Back then I'm sure not many businesses always asked lot of questions or actually looked up there employees so they could've got jobs and who knows what from there.

Thank you so much for covering this. I live near Pickering and the boys were just a little younger than me. This case has stuck with for a very long time. I’ve always assumed it was a water accident and the bodies have just never been found (public surprise at ‘no body cases’ always surprises me - the world is a still vast place that holds onto its secrets) but truthfully, anything could’ve happened including abduction. I feel for these boys & their families.

People tend to underestimate how dangerous a lake like Ontario can be. They say "Oh its just a lake, its not like its the ocean", as if its a safe, calm little recreational area, barely bigger than a pond, but this is not the case. True, Ontario is the smallest of the great lakes by surface area and second smallest by volume, but it is still a massive body of water. It is the 13th largest lake in the world and to give some perspective on how big it actually is, it is larger than the entire state of New Jersey. Its can also be quite cold and can have some crazy weather. It might not have the legendary size or power of Lake Superior, but it is still not to be trifled with. Also, while true Boston Whalers are extremely tough, maybe nearly impossible to sink, the boat the boys took was an *imitation* Boston Whaler, not a real one. There are quite a few knock off Boston Whalers and they vary in quality. It's possible that this boat did not have the quality or structural integrity of an actual Boston Whaler and therefore might have been more prone to sinking. . Im not saying the boys definitely went down in that lake, but I think a lot of people are too quick to dismiss the possibility. The one thing I know is that its extremely difficult to make six nearly grown men disappear without a trace, but one agent capable of doing so would be a huge, deep, cold body of water like Lake Ontario.

@@Amsayy it's true, out country was founded on some of the most disgusting hate crimes and murders, especially against children (think residential schools) and continues to have some absolutely horrible crimes. While most Canadians are kind enough, the bad people know how to hide their crimes well which isn't hard in a vastly empty land with lack luster police enforcement. I wish people would see that better, so many people get hurt here expecting a safer country then the come into unfortunately.
