“I’d like to look this girl up and see what kind of tiny little sociopath she’s turned into…” I was thinking the same thing. I was born in ‘79 and remember obscene phone calls were rampant during the 80s, scaring the crap out of me as a child. What kind of person terrorizes innocent children and parents? I’m so grateful that crimes are much harder to get away with these days now that I’m a mother. I still carry the trauma around with me as an adult.

Reminds me of that movie where the mom was a serial killer who would torment the neighborhood with prank calls. It was funny AF, but so dark. The fact they had Julie call her mom to make sure it was okay for her to go with them but the police weren't concerned that they didn't bring her back... If they were responsible enough to have her call her mom they would've returned her when they said they, especially sense one had to be back by 4.... Why weren't really anyone concerned that not only did the two teenagers disappear but they also disappeared with a 9 year old.
@wordsleuth992

it is very odd and difficult to understand. clearly these were responsible girls - who respected parents and weren’t willing to even take her to the mall without express consent from her mom. How can they even think they would be runaway’s? it defy’s logic. If you haven’t seen a 9 year old by day’s end i think it is safe to say foul play MUST BE INVOLVED. it’s not like a 9 year old can take care of herself. And the timing - right before Christmas??? There is NO WAY a child is going to willingly skip the fanfare of Christmas Eve and getting ready for Santa coming!?!! What 9 year old isn’t going to be home Christmas morning to see Santa’s gifts?? Was it just laziness?? or was something more at play here??🤨

It would be a concern no matter the year if your 9 year old was never returned home and the 2 teenagers she was with were no where to be found.

That was is though and I think it was pretty basic for the time. Along with pay attention to cars when crossing roads. It was a different time. I know these things still happened but not as often and the news may have only covered many incidents locally. I miss that time! Maybe im just looking at the information we know (as of part 1) too suspiciously... But these are the things that stand out in my mind as I listen to this... 1. Rachel has been married for six months when she goes missing. 2. Rachel's husband inherited a business when he married Rachel. 3. If Tommy and Rachel divorced, Tommy would lose that business, or at least have to buy out Rachel's half. 4. Tommy was recently engaged to Rachel's sister. 5. Rachel's sister lived with Rachel and Tommy. 6. The only letter received by anyone after they went missing was to Tommy (the very next day). I guess just from all the true crime cases ive watched/heard about, these things seem to be too much of a coincidence.

Jr high, I still got picked up by one of my parents despite living less than 1/3 mile from school… my mom was paranoid af and dad wouldn’t go against anything she said, ever. I adopted her paranoia and understood when my kids came into the world. My daughter and I even shopped for my wedding dress at La Gran Plaza (which is current name of the mall) a few yrs back with her being 16 @ the time and I made sure she was at my side the entire time. Malls are horrible places for human trafficking now, according to both my kids. So parents-please don’t turn your children loose at the mall, alone, and never ever without means of getting help should the need arise! Free range kids are the ones weirdos look for, and it only takes a second for their lives to change forever for the worst. Be safe all

@crystalh450
@crystalh450 Жыл бұрын
@@atomtension5645 I get that it would be confusing to someone now, but keep in mind that in the 1970s and on into the early 1980s, people didn't have a lot of things like video games and social media to keep them inside. It just didn't exist and people are social creatures. Kids would be more inclined to be social outside, and that meant spending time with neighbors. It isn't like social media where you have a lot of people to choose from, so you would be limited to being stuck with choosing to hang out with people in your neighborhood that you didn't have to travel far to see. That often meant that you would hang out with someone a couple of years older or younger if they are the closest in age to you. God help you if you grew up in a bad neighborhood and you may end up hanging out with people you wouldn't have if you had been given better options because that is how you made friends- with your neighbors and school friends. It does make sense that the married chick might be friends with the 14 year old girl from her neighborhood that was a couple of years younger. It sounds like maybe the 9 year old was the little sister of the younger girl's boyfriend and she just wanted to go to the mall. I could totally see it happening, though. People were a lot more trusting with their kids then and it was before the Adam Walsh case when people weren't really as concerned that people would be disappearing with their kids. Demographics were more homogenous (i.e. people had more similar values) and it just wasn't something that happened on the regular like it does now. I mean, people would also hitchhike and they just weren't as worried about that sort of thing.

Same. My father got married his senior year when he was 17 and his wife, my "half" sister and brother's mother, Lucy, was 16 and they had my oldest sister immediately. They divorced when she was 12, my dad said because Lucy would start many MANY physical fights and my father didn't want to defend himself and end up in prison and he grew out of working 12 hours a day just to come home and walking in the door and get his ass kicked before he could get out of his work clothes, so they had to divorce and my dad married my mother when he was 32 in '88. They did excellent financially, even as high school dropout teen parents. They were buying a home in their 20s. Successfully. I asked my dad why he did that, expecting him to say because he accidentally knocked Lucy up and so he did the right thing by marrying her and supporting her and the baby imagine my surprise when he said, because we were ready to get married we were in love. And they did get married before Lucy became pregnant when I asked the dates! So getting married young, in the south, was a lot more common than Stephanie realizes. It WAS young but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. I had sex for the first time when I was a freshman with an 18 year old senior and could've gotten pregnant. That's young, 14, but it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. And Stephanie is a teen mom her own self so of all people she should know that teenagers make adult decisions all the time and they made them even more frequently in years past the average age of a first time mother NOW is around 28, but back then it was far younger. And like I said, especially in poor areas, and in the south. Ft Worth wasn't a poor area at all, but I'm sure they had a hood somewhere in the city with 17 year olds getting married. But imagine how strange it was to me to imagine getting married at 17 simply because I was ready to have kids and all the responsibilities that come with marriage that my dad WANTED. The only people I knew who got married at 17 were kids that accidentally got knocked up. I think I know one couple that got married at 19 because they wanted to.

@@atomtension5645 the 14 year old and the 4 year old was her husband's family weren't they? It seemed to me she was more like babysitting and less hanging out. Anyway, I don't think it's unusual for a 17 year old, a junior in high school, to hang out with a 14 year old, a freshman. NOT at all. I did that all the time in school and I graduated in 2006. Like I said, I was a freshman and my bf was a senior. And the 4 year old is just tagging along with her obviously to visit the mall not hang out with a 17 year old. I've heard this story a dozen times and it never ceases to break my heart... Three innocent young girls that just wanted to go to the mall to buy Christmas presents.

I grew up going to that mall but it’s a “Mexican mall” called La Gran Plaza. They sell everything from jewelry to Quinceañera dresses/Mexican cowboy style outfits and amazing Mexican food. There’s always live mexican music on the weekends and traditional Folklorico dances to accompany it. It’s a beautiful place that reminds me so much of my culture and family. It’s so tragic that this happened there. Thanks for being so respectful when covering such a tragic topic. Fort Worth is still such a dangerous city

There was a really high profile case in our town that just happened. The trial just finished and the guy was found guilty of killing his girlfriend’s three-year-old. There’s a lot to it it’s James Staley III and he’s from Wichita Falls Texas. Nothing happened for the longest because our town is corrupt and his father owns a big part of our town. If our community did not demand Justice it would have been ruled an accident. The entire town bonded together and there were Justice for Wilder signs everywhere. All over front lawns, in windows, and on cars. The little boy’s name was Wilder McDaniel. His father is Bubba McDaniel, an MMA fighter. The mom is Amber McDaniel and she just confessed that she had something to do with her sons murder. But you can tell from the text messages they are so sad. He talks about abusing him and she literally responds lol 🤬 This is a really sad case it was actually heard in Dallas. There is a lot to this case. That poor baby suffered for months and the mom knew about it the whole time it’s disgusting

My mom knew and went to school with Carla. I grew up hearing her story. I grew up going to the bowling alley she was taken from. I went to the same high school too and often drove by Carla's house because it was near mine. It was always this scary every feeling because I knew the killer was never caught despite the killers suspecting the actual killer shortly after and just blowing off the direct evidence they had against him. My mom had told me her parents kept her room how it was that night of the dance. So so sad but incredible all the kids that went to school with her got to see justice for Carla once the bastard was finally arrested. Too bad her parents had already passed I think that was the hardest part but her brother got to see it so small miracles and blessings.Oh the Cullen Davis murders EVERYBODY KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED WITH THAT crazy stuff. I lost three loved ones in one day.💔 they were sailing in Antarctica, and they were at a safe port. But suddenly they left, sailing straight into a huge storm, and the boat sank. They were experienced sailors, and they would never do such a thing unless someone was forcing them to leave. The families are fighting to get the records of the different parties involved, but so far they have only met resistance. I know they died, and 12 years later, I still struggle with the fact that we couldn't find them, not one sign from the boat, and that we don't have a grave to go to is the worst. Not knowing where they are is horrible. And we know to a degree what happened to them. Can't imagine what the families of the missing girls are going through. So so sad💔

I always love how in-depth your coverage is! That said, I'm not sure the 14 year old who made the prank calls necessarily grew up to be a crappy person. I operated in a VERY different energy at 14 than I do at 33. I was an angry kid and I did some things I am not proud of, but now very proud of how I conduct myself. So, the path she was on may have changed and it really might have been stupid kid stuff. But something very weird happened in this case for sure.

I definitely was different too, but I’m pretty sure tormenting the family of a missing child isn’t typical “oops I’m 14 and I don’t fully know what’s right in life yet” that’s like… kind of sick

@veronicaellen4634 Жыл бұрын
@heather_doestruecrime oh absolutely, 100%. But kids can do some pretty sick, vicious things- even knowing what it is they are doing because they WANT to cause pain. Usually because they're in it. Sometimes they grow up to do things even worse, and sometimes they grow up and turn things around. I'm in Canada and minors here are charged under a whole different act than adults are, because it's understood these might not be true colours showing at this age. Check out the Jasmine Richardson case- the outcome on that one really challenges the concept of justice when kids do something evil.

Good points about the letter. Also, I would guess it was a envelope that had already been received by Thomas that was being re-used to make it look like it came from Rachel. Easier to re-use an envelope and alter the postmark slightly -like change a digit on the date or blur the zip code - than completely forge a postmark, I would think.

Relying on the work of others--to the point of reciting paragraphs of their writing without properly giving them credit--is very dodgy, especially when you are making money from this by ads and by sponsorships

Where's the link to the story you're reading verbatim? Maybe a twitter link for the author as well? Seems worthwhile since it's your only source and you're making money repeating someone else's words?

The last thing two teenagers would want to do is run away to live the good life with a little kid in tow.... That theory is so absurd that it blows my mind.

Stephanie you are amazing and so thoughtful. I do want to see more about Gannon but I completely understand that you want to give his case and life the love he deserved. Oh and have a wonderful Mother’s Day. 🥰

I remember this sad case. I was 9 at the time and went to school with Julie, though we weren't in the same class and weren't friends. About a month or so after the girls' disappearance, I remember a friend of Julie's telling our PE teacher that Julie's mom still had the Christmas tree up with her presents under it. That hit me hard then and it hits me hard now. I can't begin to imagine the agony of being the parents of a missing child. I couldn't live with it.

Stephanie, you‘ve made an excellent point when talking about the letter Tommy had received. The fact that the handwriting was similar to Rachels but it still seemed out of place points to somebody else writing it with things actually written by Rachel right next to them. This is just my opinion but Tommy and Rachel‘s sister are my prime suspects here - at least when it comes to the letter.
