My dad had a 78 bronko with square head lights and a 79 f150 with square lights. I have a 78 f250 with square head lights and its a lariat. Love the old trucks. But most people dont know much about them.

Where did you get your Info ? Because I read in a Ford manual that the beginning of 1978 they had round headlights and the last half of 1978 they had square headlights and all 1979's had square ! I read that they used up the round headlights they had from the 1977's !

I wonder if that's only partly true. Maybe Ford selected the "Custom" trim to exhaust that inventory. Then marketed them as a feature of a lower trim to set it apart from other trim levels. However, there's only one flaw with either logic. It simply could have been added to seed stock in the warehouse for OEM replacement parts if overabundance was the case. Either suggestion is plausible.

Simply not true. Your manual is either wrong or your reading it wrong because I had a 9/78 F250 Custom with FACTORY round lights I got from an old man with 32k documented miles. The only change in 78.5 was in the security group, they added optional keys that were different for the door locks and the ignition switch.

Another way to tell is the VIN. I've got 2 78s a Ranger Lariat and a Custom.

Wait I’m confused cuz I have a 1979 custom but it was a plow truck and I have square headlights. Does that mean someone swapped them?

The only variance on your video that I hadn’t heard was that certain “fleet vehicles from 79” could be ordered with round headlights. I had always read that the only 78’s with round headlights were Custom trucks. Never knew of any 79’s whatsoever that had them.

Yeah I found that kind of interesting as well, you can find 79’ Uhaul’s with round headlights still. You were correct though!

how to tell a 78 from 79 ? VIN #

78 had round lights. If it's a higher trim, it has chrome bezels and square lights. But the #1 way is through the vin. Specifically the last 6 digits. 78 will say anything from AE0001 to CK9999 and 79 will be anything from DC0001 to FK9000 77 back had 1 letter and 5 numbers in the last 6 digits. 78 and up had 2 letters and 4 numbers.
