in the movie, they were arguing over who gets to go, and decided to draw straws for the honor. the engineer who built the ship rigged it. he was holding 3 equal lengths of wire, and after the first two picked their lengths, he folded the bottom of the wire so it looked shorter. the two scientists see through him immediately, they argue, and he convinces them to let him go get the nuclear material from the engine, as this was his ship.

Yeah, it would be very noticeable right away. If the Earth stopped rotating the geography of the entire planet would change. With it spinning, the centrifugal force creates a slight bulge of water around the equator. If that stops, that bulge flattens, flooding all low laying areas, everywhere. With that though, the higher elevated areas within the ocean will become dry land. The planet will also likely become tidally locked with the Sun, which will mean that the only inhabitable place to live will be in the perpetual twilight zone. Because the dark side will be too cold and dark for anything to live, and the light side will be too hot for anything to live. All of this will mean that oxygen levels will drop as well. Not much complex life would be left, if any.

So scientifically speaking, according to the Newton's First Law of physics if Earth’s core would of stopped spinning or cooled down this would not cause the Earth to stop spinning on its axis because of inertia. However, if Earth’s core were to cool down then the Earth’s magnetic fields would cease to exist.
