I wonder what it would be like if CPW was actually on the East Side, and named CPE instead. We already have Lex Ave and 2nd Avenue though, and on the west side, we're fine with 7th Ave and CPW.

Nice vid!! I am searching for photos of the subway entrance from 60s and 70s which is what I remember. It had a giant poster or photo of the big gorilla from the diorama. I used to get soooo thrilled when my mom took me to the museum thru that entrance. I need to do more searching. I'd love to see it again.

Having the B and C trains go to this station makes sense.

This station brings back some... interesting memories for me, to say the least. It was the summer of 02, early July to be exact, and I was on one of the last uptown C trains for the night. Everything was going as normal, until all of a sudden a man comes crashing through the back window. This man, who was wearing a black suit, and bore a striking resemblance to Will Smith, tells us all to move to the front of the train because of a bug in the electrical system. No one listens to him. What exactly was this bug, you ask? Well, it was nothing but a GIANT 600 FOOT WORM. The worm starts eating the train, and now everyone begins to panic, trying to get to the front car as quickly as possible. Eventually, the man in the suit was able to stop the worm, but by this point all that was left of the train was the front half of the first car. The "train" stops right here at 81st St., to drop off the passengers and go out of service for obvious reasons. Before we exit, the man in the suit tells us all to wait for a second, pulls out a pair of sunglasses, puts them on, then pulls out some kind of device which emitted a bright blue light, and then chews us all out for not listening to him sooner. During this rant, he accused all New Yorkers of being ignorant and acting like they've seen everything, then flashes us with his device again, and tells us to enjoy smaller, more energy efficient cars, before then flashing the motorman and leaving. Not exactly sure what that device was supposed to do. If I had to guess, I'd say it was a memory wiping device, and the only reason why it didn't work on me was because I was wearing sunglasses as well. And that's the story of how I almost got eaten by a giant worm on the New York City Subway. Never saw that man again, so if you're watching this video and reading this comment, Mr. Will Smith lookalike, thanks for saving my life that day.

I was at this station about 2 months ago I was heading here as it was a school trip to visit the museum. SMEE speeds are maxed to 40 on Express due to the fleet being 75 feet and about 20-30 on lcl but NTT's (R179 and soon the R211's) can hit about 45-50 MPH on Express while 30 on lcl.
@MysticTransit2 жыл бұрын
The SMEE speeds aren't maxed to 40 on the Exp, and it certainly isn't because of the length of the trains. The R46s can hit upwards of 45-50 on the Exp, and NTT's can hit about 40 on the Local.
@jalenfuller20002 жыл бұрын
Agreed and the R46s in their youth had even higher speeds and are some of the fastest cars depending on the line but when it’s on a line like a you have so many timers slowing them down

This is actually located in the Upper West Side cause the upper east side has 4,5,6 & Q trains 72-96th streets. If you want to go to 77th Street Lenox Hill Hospital 6 train or 1 train 79th Street R179 R211 announcements say connection is available to the m79 Select Bus Service.

This is a good way to get to the Upper East Side from Penn Station. Take the C to this station and get the M79 SBS bus right next to the exit from the station. It is much easier than taking the 1/2/3 to Times Square, Shuttle to Grand Central, and 4/5/6 uptown. I use this sometimes when going to a doctor's office on Third Ave. between 80th and 81st. I also sometimes walk to 34th and 6th and take the Q to 86th and 2nd Ave.
@EpicThe1122 жыл бұрын
@@1575murray there is another way of doing that it's actually 1,2,3 trains Penn Station to Times Square then Q train 42nd to 86th st 2nd ave. Instead of C train M79 sbs 1,2,3 Shuttle/7 train to IRT East Side Line.
@1575murray2 жыл бұрын
@@EpicThe112 I know that but I avoid changing trains at Times Square due to the number of incidents there have been recently at that station. That's why I prefer to walk to 6th Ave. to get the Q. That's actually the easiest way since there are no transfers needed at all plus there is a good bagel place on 2nd Ave. between 80th and 81st.

Thank you for the tour of the 81st Street Museum of natural History station. Also, you make an excellent point about the IND stations being extra long and having far reaching entry points beyond the main street for which the subway is named. One could surmise that it was the effort by the city of New York at the time to allow multiple convenient entry and exits underground to shield passengers from the elements and to enable them to get closer to their above ground destination. That is just a theory and a thought but may prove to be the most logical one. It's an excellent point that is made. The IND was thinking ahead in the sense that those extra entry points and the extra long subway stations would not only accommodate longer trains and larger cars but also provide multiple emergency egress as well as convenient passenger egress. The IND subway stations with their mosaic station signs and other tiles are truly magnificent. They are different style from the BMT and the IRT Mosaic tiles but collectively they represent some great artwork versus some of the newer stations that we see not just in New York but on other Metro lines. these stations were created in an entirely different era when they wanted to provide not just a Transit ride but at least provide passengers with an ambience of appreciation. I'm still pleased to see the artwork at the 81st Street Station commemorating the museum and it's many different sights and exhibits.
@1575murray2 жыл бұрын
I like stations like this that have the original IND style tiles in good condition (with some enhancements which were not there when the line was built). Some IND stations which were rebuilt would have been better off if they had been left alone.

It's surprising they never found a way to remediate that rumbling on CPW when you consider those used to be some of the most expensive apartments in the city. I had occasion to stay in one of them once over spring break and you can hear it more pronouncedly when you're high up in those buildings on the CPW side S. of 81st. It doesn't sound nearly as strange down on the street. I'll bet they've tried to force the MTA to reduce it more than once since the line was built, but the question of 'how would you do that' is probably the operational point. It might be no amount of money could have any effect - but I donno, seems there would be ways to reduce it. It may be they're already done all that's possible. Or the padding got ate by rats?
@sylonisupport682 жыл бұрын
Local service on CPW needs to improve. You think it's bad during the weekdays when the B is running, but during the weekends it's even worst when the B is not running. The B needs to run during the weekends. Notice how crowded the station is, especially going downtown.
