CBTC is the key to better service in the NYC Subway System. Flawless service, without delays can only be achieved if the new CBTC Signaling System is more widely installed across the network.

As a Bronx resident, I think the Concourse, Jerome, Broadway, White Plains, Dyre Branch, and Pelham Lines should get CBTC because: 1: The 4 needs to fix its overnight timing and same being said for all the other lines except for the 6 And 2: Not knowing what time those trains might come, you know it will be a 15-20 min gap. Sometimes you might get lucky and catch a 5 minute train.

Another thing is definitely gonna happen is the Thrid Avenue Elevated line. Maybe they will bring the R62AS on the 8 Thrid Avenue Elevated line. IRT will still be messed up until Rogers Junction gets uncluttered. CBTC doesn’t look like it will fix the mess down there. And I think any CBTC on the main line IRT (1,2,3,4,5,6) will require a full wholesale change to R262 for the three borough lines and the 1 and 6 getting the R142 fitted with CBTC, unless it’s too far down the line then it might be more beneficial to retire the R142’s as well with R262’s replacing the entire old fleet.

Then, what MTA decided to do was have D Trains switch local to make a stop at 161. Then another upward grade from 161st to 167th. Then there’s the switch after 167th, proceeding express to Tremont, which is a slow ride for an “express” service. After tremont is another upward grade from Tremont to 182-183 Sts. Fordham Road to Kingsbridge Road is another upward grade which is pretty steep so it’s pretty slow. @@captainkeyboard1007 by the time cbtc is done on Lexington, the R142s would be at the age of replacement. Why spend money converting a (by that time) 28-30 year old subway car that has a fleet of 1,000+ cars when you can just replace them with new subway cars. The R142A's would be much cheaper to convert since there are 200+ cars that are left that were not converted into R188s and it's much easier since Kawasaki is still around. Bombardier is now a part of Alstom and I doubt they would want to deal with the R142s. The R142s would have to be rebuilt from the ground up since they are their own problem (they are reliable) but it took them almost a decade to get them to work right. A conversion like the R188 would be like putting lipstick on a pig esp if someone like CRRC does the R142 conversion.

How about BMT Broadway 4th ave IND 6th and 8th lines IRT West and Eastside lines. One thing that the MTA can explore is putting CBTC overlaid on ETCS Level 1 this is what Manila LRT Line 1 is using with CAF Elmira Mexico trains. That way there's increased frequency. Here's another thing to consider during the late evening D trains are still running express on 6th ave together with F train with a D train being 15-20 min behind the first one. If CBTC Current Thales/Siemens or the CBTC overlaid on ETCS Level 1 that will actually speed up the D train in the late night service pattern Making the gap being 3-5 minutes from the first train to the 2nd train. Those require a new high-capacity train 5 doors 75ft like a Alstom Metro Cammell Hong Kong MTR EMU or CRRC Sifang Chicago Springfield Illinois MTR Hong Kong EMU derivative to fit B division loading gauge.

They gotta fix those timers at 96 Street and between 50 St and 42 St. Lexington Avenue really needs CBTC on the express tracks first. Tbh CBTC should be installed on the express first except for 6th Av imo😂

All the rapid transit lines will have electronic signaling Communication Based Train Control by a slow and itchy process. Since the New York City Subway has various kinds of rolling stock, this thing will make the CBTC an itchy conversion. It takes lots of money and time to fully complete.

CBTC should be installed on the whole network. But that means an entire new signaling system (save for the little bit already installed) and renewing half of your fleet. That costs BIG BUCKS. You can’t raise the price of a token another quarter and solve your money problems with this one. So the project gets spread out over a number of years. If you want to accelerate CBTC installation, you CANNOT even bring up any expansions, because there isn’t money to pay for both at the same time.

I am in favor of the Brighton and sixth Avenue lines here in sheepshead bay getting cbtc, same with the west end and sea beach lines. I’m very annoyed with these fixed block signals and slow service on these lines. We had r160s on the Brighton line a decade ago, now we have down graded to r46s and r68s. Same with the sea beach lines. The r160s are more modern and safer in my eyes in the event of an emergency. With the recent shooting on the n train at 36th street station, both of these cars no longer have a place in service. Am I the only one who’s acknowledging the problems of the Brighton and sea beach lines? The r211s can’t come soon enough.

Installation of Communication Based Train Control system on the whole rapid transit network is an itchy and a slow process. It will take comprehensive organization in order to put it forth to full speed. The electronic parts to be installed along the [rail]road calls for lots of time to be accomplished successfully. I do not believe that the SMEE railcars will be equipped with Communication Based Train Control. They were made for manual operation without electronic controls, like those to the destination side signs on the R44 and R46 cars. There may not be enough room underneath the chassis (car body) to add any new and electronic equipment.

The 4 and 5 still have NTTs. The R142A trains from the 6 were converted to R188 cars and are used on the 7, so the 7 could use CBTC. The R62A trains from the 7 were therefore pushed to the 6. There is not enough R142/As to run on the 4, 5, 6, considering the 2 and 5 share trains, so what runs on the 2 also runs on the 5.

I agree with the lines that should get the CBTC equipment next, but what I disagree with is the time it takes to install the system. Literally only working nights and weekends prolongs the work to upgrade, and time is of the essence. If anything, what they should do to minimize construction times and headaches is to close some lines for three months at a time. This gives crews room to rip out the old system, install the new CBTC system, and also do other work to keep the stations and tunnels in shape as well. You could probably shave months off the schedule. Yeah its going to be a full closure, but the system is upgraded sooner and less intensive work will happen in the future.
@MysticTransit
@MysticTransit 2 жыл бұрын
I think we can only do a full closure on certain lines. Lines like the Crosstown, Fulton, and 63rd St Line can have a full closure, because there are alternatives for travel, and they aren't extremely crowded lines. Lines like Lex, QBL, and 6th though, should stay open, as closing them would only cause more crowding on the other paralleling lines, and the bus lines that run on those streets.
@TheRailLeaguer
@TheRailLeaguer 2 жыл бұрын
@@MysticTransit You do have a point on that, as full closure on busier lines can result in crowding as you mention. I have been thinking of alternatives for these lines, including local only service or express only service. Either way, I’m just hoping for a faster timeline for CBTC installation. I’m honestly tired of waiting for more reliable subway service.
@MysticTransit
@MysticTransit 2 жыл бұрын

How much less expensive is it to renovate the R142 and R142A fleets as opposed to just ordering more R188s?
@TheRailLeaguer
@TheRailLeaguer 2 жыл бұрын
They are not ordering more R188s. 126 new cars and 380 R142A conversions are more than enough for the Flushing Line. In addition, not ordering new cars is NOT an option, especially as the older legacy fleet does not have any provisions for CBTC unlike the NTT train cars. To maintain current service levels, provide fleet expansion, and ensure a CBTC-compatible fleet, idler trains cars must be replaced. It is cheaper to order new NTT cars than to refit the existing legacy fleet.
