Have to agree with this. But on one hand, it IS his opinion and thus he can do the video how he pleases - on the other hand, it really invalidates a general sense of discussion and evaluation skewed when you have certain designs focused upon more so (Cough, Cough, May, Dawn, Serena, Cough Cough) through the use of promotion via the anime. Granted, his videos are pretty dang shallow. Apparently opinion pieces from one guy is popular enough to create merchandise as opposed to actually making legit content like Truegreen7 who visually conceptualizes what if scenarios like missing links between Pokemon families.

Hilbert means "magnificent in battle" or "battle bright." Hilda means "Battle Maiden." Tōya and Tōko come from "fight" (which makes their English names fitting), "transparent" or "untainted" which establishes their role as the middle and leader of the group. Their names make sense

I can't see Red as a protagonist. I started with soul silver and played every protagonist besides Red, I remember how hard he was to beat and the few time I saw him in other games and to me he's more of the ultimate rival, the ultimate duel to become the very best than a protagonist. Rip... Red will always be a protagonist in my eyes. Blue version was the very first game I ever owned, so seeing him atop mt silver was one of the most mind blowing moments ever. The fact that you are facing yourself is one of the most epic experiences I've ever had. I guess if you played the Johto games before the Kanto ones you wouldnt get the same experience, but lemme tell you, it was amazing. Also yes, Gold/Ethan is a very good boi. Brendan's my fav though!

Some of the protagonists do make appearances outside of being controlled by the player, even in the games. There’s games like the hoenn games where the protagonist of the opposite gender to the player character is your rival, and there’s Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon and the lets go games where Red makes an appearance, as well as Green/Leaf and Red in the lets go games

Sometimes it gets really confusing with the names as I play the games and read the manga in Japanese language, but Ruby (Brendon?) is especially charismatic in the manga series. His care for Sapphire and his Milotic was so compelling, it brought tears to my eyes. Not to mention he's so insanely talented at battles, he can almost rival the Battlemaster Red himself. Shit I don't even like gen3 and he's my favorite protagonist. It's a shame Mystic didn't take the manga into consideration, it's the only place that does the male protagonists justice.

Design-wise, i prefer female protagonists, because they tend to be more original. I mean, not trying to be an hater, but most male protagonists are basically just a cap and either a red and/or blue jacket. I like Brendon and Ethan mostly because of their more original look. However, i didn't like the designs for either the male and female protagonists in sun and moon. I found them a little too childish. Brendon and May from oras are a little more childish too, but at least they have nostalgia on their side XD

I think Kris just got scammed with that artwork. Gold's GSC artwork sucks too, but he got a redesign later, so no one really remembers anymore... IDK why, but my favourite protagonist is Kris, I loved her ever since I broke my first ever Crystal save, and I even played a SoulSilver romhack where she was the protag instead of Lyra, and I really loved it. Her vs. sprite was honestly one of the coolest things I've ever seen. And her hair directly mocks physics just by existing, I think that's super awesome too.

Master NER D eh, oak would be praised just for how often the games use him so you see so much of him, the jhoto guy has pretty much no personality, professor birch doesnt do anything except get attack by a poocheyena, professor rowan is just kinda stern and bland, prof juniper doesnt really do anything in the games, prof sycamore is kinda interesting but still doesnt do much, and kukui is frickin awesome, he has a lot of personality, is the only prof who actually has a team, creates the elite 4 and league in the region, and depending on which game youre playing is the champion

My thoughts: Red- He's pretty cool and badass, my favourite male protagonist Chase- He's like a really watered down version of Red Leaf- She's like a kanto lass trainer but wears a white top hat, and i like it lol Elaine- She looks like a fusion between Leaf and Hilda Ethan- I like his GSC design better,I prefer his short being yellow and just prefer his old aesthetic overall. His HG/SS design is okay. He is also my second favourie male protagonist. Crystal- I like her blue hair and her hairstyle. She stands out. Lyra- She's pretty cute i guess Brendan- I REALLY like his hat. May- Her design makes her look like some kind of pirate, and I found that really cool when I first saw her. Lucas- Pretty forgettable. Though I do kinda like his outfit in Platinum. Dawn- Pretty memorable , mainly because of her design and the anime. Probably my favourite female protagonist Hilbert- He's okay. Hilda- I like her design, she seems pretty spunky by looking at her. Nate- A much better version of Hilbert. I like that hat and hair and those shorts look so comfy that it give Youngster Joey a run for his money. Rosa- She looks pretty girly and adorable design wise. In the Pokemon Black and White 2 Trailer she seems pretty spunky and like that. Calem- Is basically like Lucas but more plain Serena- Pretty much what this video says about her. Elio- The best name for a protagonist. His design is okay, though I prefer his appearance in the original Sun and Moon. Selene- I prefer her appearance in the original Sun and Moon games because of THAT hat. Despite her design being simpler compared to the other protagonists I still like it.

I put a lot of effort into crafting my own version of the protagonists in the Pokemon games, and of them, my favorites so far have been the ones I've made in Ruby, Pearl, and Black versions. My Black protagonist (male) was actually the first time I really played a Pokemon game with this mentality of fashioning my own unique character out of them, the others came about in later replays of the games. I chose to name Yang after my sister named her White protagonist Yin, and the more plot-driven story of Black really helped bring out my inner Roleplayer, and Yang turned into a very calm and intense character. I ended up referring to him as the 'Pragmatic Hero' because he could actually see where Team Plasma was coming from with their mentality about setting Pokemon free, and his motivation for getting in their way was all about believing they were doing more harm than good with their methods, and represented the unbiased viewpoint of someone working towards a compromise. My Ruby protagonist (female) I named Verna and ended up with I believe the most interesting character type I've made so far with my Pokemon Characters. She ended up being an extremely reluctant participant in the game's story, constantly just ending up in the wrong place at the wrong time and having to fight Team Magma out of self-defense, which put her on their radar completely against her own desires. Eventually, though, she had to accept that she was in too deep. She knew too much about Team Magma's plans and if she didn't at least TRY to stop them, she would be just as much to blame for what they would do to the world. In spite of being terrified, she fought back and managed to save the world anyways. That said, my Pearl protagonist (female) Is easily the favorite character I've made for a Pokemon game. Her name is Lin, and unlike most of the other games protagonists, she wound up hating Team Galactic with a *passion* through her game. There were no accidents where Lin was concerned, after a while, she loathed them so completely for the way they worked that she actively decided to hunt them down. Dealing with Team Galactic became more important to her than the Gyms or even the Pokedex, which makes it a darn shame that Pearl railroaded me into completing the gyms before I even could progress the story. I would have left them behind after Gym 4 if I had the option to like you do in the Kanto games.

The people you play as never have personalities or dialogue. If you play as Brendan in Ruby and Sapphire, then May is the rival. When you choose May, she's not the rival anymore and thus, a completely different person with a different personality. If we're going by your logic, then May and Brendan have the absolute exact same personalities in the original Ruby and Sapphire games. Red is supposed to be just that. The fact that he can't talk doesn't necessarily mean it's self-insert and can be interpreted in many ways. One of them, of course, is to say it's a self-insert, but that's still not a fact. He actually does show a bit of personality through-out the game if you read what the trainers who pick battles with you say. His silence is just a running gag at this point. If anyone is a self-insert character, it's Hilbert and Hilda. Red at least has a consistant name in all of the games. Hilbert and Hilda are referred to as "a trainer", "my child", or "...", and they also don't really say all that much or appear literally anywhere else but their own games as protagonists, not even as a rival or another helping character.

Imo Lucas is the best one, probably because Platinum was my first impression of the Pokemon games (I had watched the show before that). The Let's Go characters just look really off to me, because it's like Nintendo tried to make them as cute and as marketable for kids as possible. And Nate has in my opinion the strangest outfit anyone could ever wear. He's got this visor with some of his hair going over it, freaking leggings with some real baggy swimming shorts, a T-shirt, and a turtleneck vest jacket thingy with shorter sleeves than his T-shirt.

It has a habbit of throwing the lore out the window with how it has pokemon killing each other except that pokemon don't really ever kill each other in battle, only for food. And it can't seem to get the legendarys right. You expect me to believe that team rocket managed to trap and fuse the titans of fire, ice, and lightning into that abomination? Yeah, no. The pokemon world is insanely advanced in both technology and magic, and their sealing capabilities are second to none in all of media, but we are also talking about actual deities here, no way is that going to happen with that set up. Retconning the origin of Deoxys (even though it was nonsensical and that genetics don't work that way) is definitely not okay and owning Regigigas is certainly a very big deal.

If you are referring to Red's Eevee, then no, there are no "titans of fire, ice, and lightning", nor is he "fused" from anything. Also, legendaries are hard to catch and use, not impossible by all means by any and every pokemon medium there is. It has been clear Regigigas joined Dia's team willingly and only comes out when it needs. I'm not really going to argue for the "retconning lore" since it wasn't supposed to follow any lore (what is the canon? The games? The anime? The movies?) to begin with. Deoxys is stated by the dex of an "alien virus that mutated" nothing more. It could be as easily disputed that the anime/movie Team Rocket created Mewtwo, but them something similar to Deoxys makes them retconning because? I'm not planning to start a whole debate here but I think there are some misunderstandings in your knowledge that left an ill taste of the manga.

Personal pet peeve of mine, I hate that people don’t call “Leaf” Green. I get that Blue/Gary is called that in Japan, and everywhere else we know him as Blue. But the manga adapted it made it so in Japan Gary=Green, and Leaf=Blue, and Vice-versa in America. It’s not like we go around calling the male protag in FireRed “Fire,” so why do the opposite for her? For awhile now I’ve felt like the manga is at least more decisive what it wants the characters to be by name AND/or personality. Shame not everyone reads it, it’s really good!

When people say "Blue" or "Green", I automatically think of the rival, and then I remember that the girl is intended to be called "Blue" or "Green" too and then I get confused who the person actually meant because some people refer to the guy as "Green" in America too. That's why I think it's a lot easier to just call her "Leaf".
