I guess you already met him on patreon, so about Gildarts - in the anime they never mentioned him and kept saying that Laxus and Mystogan are the strongest in the guild, but in manga it was clearly established from earlier chapters that there is another member in FT that is above those two. So when he came back, it wasn't that random. Also, Laxus is stronger than Makarov right now (he is not in his prime), but in FT the fights are usually decided by friendship and moral than actual strength, so who knows.

Arguable if Laxus is stronger than Makarov here. Like right now - yeah, Makarov is literally on his death bed. However, magic-wise Makarov is definitely stronger, especially as he has the heart for it - he would sacrifice anything, including his own life to win and save Fairy Tail, making him have an extra level over Laxus, who at this point is selfish and wouldn't want to die.
