Just too bad that MySwim Pro cannot count my OpenWater strokes on my iWatch. I am manually counting them as a reliable measure on the ocean. I find that I can trust the distance measured on my watch which is really cool. Sometimes I have 1,000 or 2,000 strokes all counted manually but crucial for my orientation.

Even with access allowed where I am, I will not stop my weekly trips to the local beach that began earlier this year. The best thing that's happened to me since I quit 🚬 :) One of the few unlikely benefits of COVID I guess...

This video is great. The bonus tips are the best part. I tried open water a month into quarantine and I was really discouraged. I was winded quickly, pool technique and timing wasn't working, the wetsuit felt funny. In short I just didn't enjoy it. Since watching this video I have swum twice using the suggestions in your bonus tips. I find the more relaxed "learning a new sport" attitude and not comparing myself to times and distances in the pool makes it a lot more enjoyable. I may not go back to the pool until winter. Thanks.

Learn to relax is important! I pick a song that I sing in my head over and over. I calmed myself swimming through ferocious seaweed during one triathlon, singing Cake By the Ocean on a loop in my head!

Hey! I just came back home from vacation in the 🏔mountains🏔hiking up in the clouds for the FIRST TIME!! And NOW I’m finally going back to swimming but, I’m also starting “OPEN-WATER swimming” in the Mid- Atlantic ocean this Thursday for the FIRST TIME after lockdown at (12:30pm EST) It will be colder water because I’m more North now where I live, than what I’ve visited this summer in OBX, NC in the South! As the waters their was in the 80s!! Here it’s in 75°F - 77°F Which is “PERFECT” temperature for swimming!!😁😁❤️🏖🏊‍♀️🌊 Any tips!? By the way, my swimming coach/FRIEND who’s also a lifeguard will be swimming with me!☺️ I can’t wait!

I love the feel of the ocean water. I love how the ocean currents feel against my body. I am fortunate that for 6 months out of the year I get to swim in the open water. I am not crazy about swimming in a pool. I swim by time and swim 4-6 times a week for between 30 minutes and 120 minutes. I have a wrist stop watch. I wear a UV shirt. I am uncomfortable with goggles, so I don't swim with one (it does hurt my eyes). I use a safety buoy...all of the time (I share the ocean with sightseeing boats). I am not a great swimmer. I am strong and change my stroke often (none of which I am great at). How can I improve my freestyle stokes in the ocean water?

3 days a week, I swim in the warm Pacific in Playa Herradura, Costa Rica. A BIG consideration is the high or low tide determining what kind of landing I will have on the other side of the harbor. You don’t always land on easy sand. You can be exhausted 5 meters from shore unable to know how to make land with hidden rocks and active waves, all of it changing with tides.
 Need to be aware of slack tide, the one hour before and after high tide or low tide when waves are more calm but not guaranteed. Forget your pride and learn ahead of time how to strap yourself to your swim buoy in case you get stung, fatigued, or injured. Get to know the unique water personality of your route: waves, currents, boats, landmarks, fish, debris, and previous storms. For swells, I just time myself to look when the swell lifts me up then I get plenty of visibility, albeit I may lose stroke continuity but who cares. My swells are tiny not too risky. My currents are pretty tame. Also, be able to swim 50% more than your plan. I was trying for a lifetime record of two miles when misorientation made that swim three miles! Very good advice to make a plan including your landing if it is not out and back. Yes have a buddy and make friends with the water taxi that crosses your path. Remember to throw away your pool goals and mindset. You are no longer in a liquid hamster wheel so you can just freaking swim.

I went for a swim in the lake today. I don’t like not seeing (murky), so I stuck with backstroke, kickboard and treading water.

Hi! I am preparing for a 3k openwater friendly race with Fins here in my home town. I was looking for a wetsuit and found one that is 3 mm on the chest and front thigh, the rest of the body is 2 mm. My question is, will this suit be good for water temperatures of 17-19 C°??? Thank you for you awesome tips, your channel has helped me a lot!!!

Thanks for the video! Any tips on rough seas ocean swimming? The last two times I swam in the Jacksonville, Florida area the sea swells have been 3-5 feet. Not sure if this is normal and how to still swim in these swells that made sighting hard with freestyle. I had to take a few breaststroke strokes. I hear that late summer the seas are calmer. Thanks! ~Ron

Hi! I've been an open water swimmer for 5 years, and generally I avoid big swells, it depends on how strong a swimmer you are, but big swells can be very dangerous so, if you are swimming have someone on the shore who can keep an eye on you and be highly visible. Breaststroke is advised so you can watch the waves, never turn your back to the waves!

In the scale of 1 to 10 how much harder is open water swimming? I'm asking for a HUGE river specifically. I would like to swim acros Danube river next year from Bulgaria to Romania. It's about 2k in distance
@FaresKsebati
@FaresKsebati 4 жыл бұрын
Open water swimming can be more challenging than pool swimming because you don't have walls to push off of and you can't control the conditions, like temperature, current, wind, etc. If you train hard, you'll be able to swim across the Danube!
