This was a very well-done video. If I remember correctly from Bambu's site, they showed layer adhesion was better with PETG Basic, but it looks like your test showed otherwise. I just received my order of PETG HF yesterday, so I'm curious to try it out after it finishes drying.

As an aside I have had TONS of problems with jams on refill spools. I recently bought 4 PLA Matte refills and 3 of them jammed multiple times. It really felt to me like the problem wasn't the end, but that the spools were not wound with the filament going all the way to the sides, so there were gaps on the left and right that the filament kept getting jammed into.

Absolutely agree on the PLA Tough cancellation compared to the PETG-HF. Did you get early access to the material? I ordered mine within an hour of the release email and am hoping it arrives in the morning. I'm down to 3 rolls of PLA Tough... :( The PLA-Tough is slightly translucent but prints like a dream. I was wondering if they would replace it with something but I haven't seen anything yet, not even a PLA-GF.

I got the spools 2 weeks before promotion (and before my travelling as mentioned in the video). The PLA Tough is "replaced" with PLA basic. They have similar properties (tested in separate video), but I just need that great layer adhesion of Tough. I ordered 5 spools, when I saw that it will be discontinued.

I always have the problem of nozzle buildup with PETG or PCTG, does anyone know why this could be happening? Printer is P1S with 0,4mm nozzle and standard slicer settings. K-Ratio tuned to 0,038 and Flow ratio is "standard". In a matter of minutes, a blob forms on the nozzle. This effect is the strongest on the first layers i think but is also happening on all other layers.

so, I was linked this as proof that the petg hf was actually better as far as mechanical properties (despite the bbl website saying otherwise, dont bother with the joke pls). which is great and all, but it seems you have a sample size of one (or two) for most of these tests???? is that correct? no offense but a test with a sample size so small being cited as evidence is pretty bad. I can respect going out and actually doing the tests, but really man, if you want to do actual science and not youtube bait you should have a sample size of 10 for the mechanical tests at an absolute minimum. though stuff like temp isnt going to matter that much. there is just no way you are getting accurate numbers for layer adhesion with that few tests. (which is the part everyone cares about because BBL themselves say it is over 20% worse with HF, with layer adhesion already being its weakest property) even if it scores higher on average, if say there is a larger scatter with hf over the original with inconsistent layer adhesion that would be a massive detriment as a part is only as strong as its weakest point. I wouldnt really call an "average" of 2 data points and average, it should really be called a median, as an average would normally imply the kind of distribution typically associated with larger sample sizes.

I always thought that HF variants would have worse creep but it's not the case here! Anyway I really wonder why would anyone use PETG on printers like X1/P1/Q1/K1 when ABS prints just as easy and has better properties from every point of view and it is in general cheaper than modified versions of any material. It also prints faster. Habits?

Have you ever printed ABS on an X1C and used a finer setting than 0.2mm, e.g. 0.16, 0.12 or even 0.0.8? Anything less than 0.2 makes totally strange sand dune-like patterns.

For me, PETG allows me to print indoors without worrying about needing ventilation like with ABS. Also, PETG warps way less and there's no shrinkage to compensate for. I'd like to have the setup for ABS/ASA in the future, but for now PETG is ideal for me.

@@olafmarzocchi6194 true, all filament does shrink, but so far with Sunlu and Hatchbox PETG I haven't had any dimensional issues. I know you tested before the filament was added to the store so you could do nothing else but your standard left brain engineering tests. However the filament is being touted as being as printable as PLA (speed and quality) with the mechanical benefits of PETG, also that it’s more hydrophilic than normal PETG (so must be dried and kept dry during long prints). I’d love to see a follow up video in which the properties that matter to non-engineers are tested, maybe you could collaborate with an artist or designer to help activate the right side of your brain to test out the fun-ness of the filament. 😁

I think a major flaw with basically any of this testing is that it really doesn't show the full capabilities of any of the materials. This is due to the print profiles for a lot of these filaments simply being optimised for print quality rather than any kind of strength. It's still good to know how they compare in terms of defaults for the masses, I guess.

Your “I cleaned it with isopropyl” comment makes it seem like you think the glue is to help the filament adhere to the bed. They don’t recommend glue for adhesion. They recommend glue as a release agent, to stop it from sticking TOO well to the PEI. One unlucky print without glue and your PEI sheet will be ruined. Just get their liquid glue already. It just rinses off with water afterwards.
@MyTechFun
@MyTechFun 2 ай бұрын
More than 5 years I am printing PETG on textured PEI (starting with Prusa MK3). I never used glue on it. And yes, glue will help in some cases with adhesion. Personal experience, I don't care what "they recommend".
@ClaytonMacleod
@ClaytonMacleod 2 ай бұрын
@@MyTechFun Next time you print something with a very large, flat surface that is usually difficult to get off the bed, use some glue. It will come off VERY easily. That's the whole point. It isn't to help adhesion. It is to make adhesion worse after the print is finished. It is called a "release agent" in that case. "I've never tried it so I don't need to." is not a good thing to say. You don't learn anything by saying "I already know something." You don't know everything. Just like the rest of us.
