I totally agree about the college route. You get a free ride which is actually the equivalent of about 300 plus thousand at this point. You also leave with a degree which gives you entrance into the job market so you can actually pursue a career if the tennis career never gets going. Its an amazing option.

My advice on his backhand would be to start to look like he loves to hit backhands instead of looking like he is hitting backhands because he is being forced to. When the ball comes to his forehand, he is setup to hit that forehand BEFORE the ball crosses the net When the ball comes to his backhand, he is setup to hit that backhand AFTER the ball bounces on his side of the net After that, you he maybe able to have the time to execute a technically better backhand (doh! 🤦🏻‍♂ edit) That being said, how many great backhands do you see outside of the top level of tennis? Also, a great summary of good options & advice by Karue for junior players to progress and develop as players.

I also play tennis and my backhand is WAY better than my forehand and from this point of view there isn’t a real weak weapon from the baseline since i never run just to hit a forehand and lose court
@Whisper555
@Whisper555 2 жыл бұрын
@@tommyspina6302 Everyone that knows what they are doing will tell you that the mental side of tennis is the most important part. If people do not agree with that concept, this is fine. If people do agree with this concept then we possibly should look at things a little bit differently? One of the more difficult concepts to instil in players is that not everything is about them. How you act, move, body language & posture as well as your technique as well as the outcome of the ball affects your opponent subconsciously and if they are clever consciously where they make the connection and purposefully go after whatever weakness you are showing. If one shot makes your opponent think every one of these shots they have given you the best Christmas present in the world, then if they are not completely brain dead tennis player they will pick up on this and either only give you that shot when its to their advantage, or choose to give you a different shot to hit. On the flip side, if you show your body language that you do not like a shot, you hate hitting a shot, or you would rather be anywhere else in the world than in that place and time hitting that shot, then it should not come as a surprise that this is the shot you are going to get. The effect becomes more pronounced when a players has a high quality and effective shot. When one shot is of much better quality than all others, then your opponent has little choice but to not go to your strength. TLDR; You try to appear to have somewhat similar levels of quality of shot, for no other reason than to make the tactical choices for your opponent more difficult.
@a2casius

Actually, that's a really good point on loving and enjoying hitting a backhand. Once done, it can really become a weapon to surprise and grind down opponents.

Absolutely honest and right on point. Well done! As a tennis coach I would have recommended the same. Maybe training/playing more on clay and then transitioning to the hard courts would be beneficial to create a more complete game and leaning how to create opportunities (not just by using a big serve and forehand).

I think nowadays the best way to go pro is college tennis. It will prepare you mentally and athletically. The players in d1 are better and better / year and the coaches are highly educated and know what they are doing. You can play many matches against high-quality players and the coaches put pressure on you which will force you to get better and kinda get that "playing on the tour" feeling. I think college tennis in the upcoming and recent years is the best and safest way to go pro. I won't recommend anything else to Felix, but just go to college and see what you can do there and between the season he can go and see where his game is going.

Meanwhile nearly all other players are playing endless futures across Europa against top 1000 players and like Jannick Sinner building up themselves in every regard for the actual Pro Tour. @@mattiastennis Travelling and competing here in Europe is really hard financially. The financial backgrounds of the families aren't as good as the american families'. Plus the tennis federations couldn't or just don't want support there players. I know some of the guys who have 12 UTRs, but they couldn't get any financial support and without that it's always impossible for a player to compete. Especially in the eastern region of Europe the salaries aren't allow you to compete at the highest level. So, for many European juniors the US is the best choice and just like for the americans Europe, the US is really exciting for the European players.

I happen to follow the two ITF-weeks in Palmanova (Spain) currently as I live in Mallorca. The competition there is simply brutal: Pre-Quali, Quali (64) and the main draw with another 64 players. There are so many tough young Spaniards, Italians and even South Americans, that Felix, as ambitious and good as he his, would hardly win one match in the quali. Growing up on hard courts in the UK you don’t have any chance against these guys. And we’re talking about players ranked between 500 and 1500 on these 15k events. The advice given to Felix in this video makes absolute sense. Try to get a scholarship in the States, develop your game in that team oriented environment and finally get yourself a University degree that on the long run will guarantee you making a living outside tennis. Honestly, I think the way into real professional tennis at least on Challenger level for Felix is too long. So, he should really consider the US-option, where he can mix sports and education.

This is the worst advice ever- 'Oh everything is hard just give up?'.. Perhaps the others who you claim as 'tough' all should have followed this and then what for them?? This is the problem with a lot of people- they just GIVE UP because they do not believe in the process and that for most of the time you will be losing and finding things DIFFICULT- but most of the time things are this way and its always darkest before DAWN.. What Felix is doing and especially going Futures-Challenger route is the MOST EFFECTIVE means to gaining the ATP Point pure and simple. The USofA is NOT where anyone should be going but RUNNING AWAY FROM. He should ignore all the silly advice by the college lovers(whose degrees are meaningless now like USofA) and keep working at what he is doing. End of story move on

Nice one! But agree, Mental strength is no.1 which comes in hand with improving his fitness! The college tip is good, but also mind that lots of good players got stuck there and never came back..so that one is tough! Late reply, but if you’re starting out on tour your not going to be able to play in like the French Open. You start off with ITF futures, if you succeed in that you will gradually start playing more ATP challengers, then you go 250, 500, 1000, and finally grand slams. You can also get a wild card into any of these level of tournaments but you’re most likely not going to get a wildcard into the French Open if your like #1300 in the world.

I am not sold on American College, it is fine for academically minded people who see the pros as a long shot. College tennis is a totally different game and I don't see top players doing it. All that time you are working to get a degree is time you are not playing tennis. Another option is to try the pros for six years , realize you are not going to make it , then go back to school when you are 25 and just do school. Sometimes, to be successful you often have to focus on one thing only. American football and basketball, fit into the college system better due to the team structure and physical nature of those sports.

Interesting. If he were to get a scholarship and get a degree in marketing or film that would be conducive to youtube. He could still continue down pro path in very competitive space - while having a team and university to support his development, and pay for many of his basic expenses.

Thanks for another great video. There must be a good reason Felix hasn't gone the US College route already. It's by far and away the most common pathway for solid juniors in the UK, and has been since the '90s (when I played). You could make the case that the entire junior development system across the different devolved federations in the UK is one big finishing school to get free American college educations (for probably quite rich already middle-class) British kids. Also, a lot of British kids get chewed up and spat out by the college system - which looks pretty relentless and unforgiving. With his successful KZbin channel already established, I think Felix is someone looking to do things differently. Maybe College is the obvious route. I look forward to seeing Felix try and make his own way towards his goal. Thanks...

College seems like the obvious route as well, especially with NIL now in existence.

Fair play to him for having a go but let's get real for a minute.... he's a dime a dozen. He'd be lacing up the D1 and D2 sneakers. Limited skill set, no backhand, lacks height so his 1st serve will never have an edge, one dimensional, no x-factor. He's got more chance of winning tattslotto than grinding out a battling journeyman career. Tennis isn't his focus anyway, it's playing the 'wanna be pro' X 'youtube content maker'... he's still buying his own sneakers ffs, he's no child prodigy.

@@yeahnah7220 that’s a pretty toxic take. Plus wrong - kid’s battling for points in the early rounds of ITF M15s + M25s against ppl ranked 1-2k in the world, and doing ok. That’s D1 college level. But you might be right that the life of a struggling touring pro is not what Felix is aspiring to do. Maybe he’s trying to do something more unique by documenting his journey through that world. At the end of the day, Felix’s motivations are his own business. I’m just grateful for his excellent content. Anyway, to conclude, I don’t know what made you so bitter, but I reckon the only thing that should be getting laced up here is your big mouth - ok buddy?

one aprt of the backhand problem is his speed on the ball. while he is insane fast chasing, he is also a little bit lazy at the foundational foot work. that also hurts his forehand at times. he needs to be one step earlier at those balls, specially with a bihander. with beeing to late he cant make the step forward in, that looses his momentum and yes he is then in a huge disadvantage. either and learn to play these defensive balls longer to the lines (dont need to be faster nessesarly) and or dont get into that position in the first place. i think both qualitys would be good to master. part of it is also psychological. you need mentally to be the predator on the court, the one who owns the court who seeks the points who has the control and agressivly dictates. not reactive defensive. that would also save time in movement and brings his foots closer faster where they should be

As a D2 player, sadly, this kid would not play 1 or 2 at almost all the schools we play or ours, so a full ride may not be as easy as you think nowadays.

The college route I think would be the most reasonable. To be honest, Felix will keep improving but 11.5 UTR is not enough. What do you think?

I think college would be the best path but that is for the individual to decide. He is on his own path
