Glen Sample Ely, Ph.D., discusses his new book, “The Texas Frontier and the Butterfield Overland Mail, 1858-1861"
For Texas, the story of the Butterfield Overland stage is both mythical and legendary. A north-south stage operated by the Risher, Hall and Sawyer partnership, it traversed Allen and carried mail and passengers from Dallas to Sherman, following the route that is now Greenville Avenue and Jupiter Road. Between 1858 and 1861, passengers could connect to the Butterfield in Sherman and travel to St. Louis or San Francisco.

Enjoyed the presentation. Ex in-laws have a ranch outside of Water Valley. The route went thru their property, and supposedly, there was a stage stop there also.

What is the name of this speaker? I live on the Overland Trail route on the Wyoming/Colorado border. I run a 100 year old gravel pit. Love this country. We need more historians to pay attention to this area.

@@louettakramer4576 I live in s/w Arizona. I have explored Butterfield Trail, from Imperial, California to Tucson Arizona. Much station ruins and graveyards still exist all along the trail. When I’m on the trail, it’s easy to see that those men were tough. They did their job regardless of Apacheria, weather, etc., etc. Now, they sit in Starbucks, drinking latte and whining about their student loans. I’m enjoy swapping Butterfield information. How may I contact you?

You can find a handful of square nails at mine shafts and cabins in Colorado mining towns…no treasure ever but a handful of nails made PRE-1880.

I am part of tge Butterfield family, with very little historical facts about my family, though was told we have ties to John w. Where is the Pinery Stage Station? Is it on the Butterfield route? If so, the speaker will be contacted. Please keep in mind that this presentation is only about the Butterfield Stage.

Please note Glen Ely's response, I could not cover every stage stop in a talk. The Pinery is well known and has been discussed many times over the years, so that was one I did not need to cover again. It’s in my book if people want in depth detail about it.

how come, researchers never ask the injuns their version, their history is more oral than written and they have better reasons to remember. or, are you only looking for a one sided version
