I remember I read an article that talks of a study where they talk about the vibrations and sound. It seems that plants use them as a cue to increase their immune system activity, this because in nature the passing of animals, rain and wind has potential to cause breakage of the foliage or damaging other structures, and potentially allowing pathogens to enter, therefore plants evolved sensitivity to sound as a sort of defense mechanism. It is possible that plants consistently exposed to sound have a better growth and resistance to pests and diseases. Some plants take this a step further and can use this sound cue to detect caterpillars and other insects, in response releasing all sorts of chemicals such as toxins that serve as natural insecticides, chemicals that alert other plants or aromas that attract predatory wasps that will get rid of the pest.

Haha, I love this video. Thanks so much! I love talking to my orchid babies. And I finally got a flower spike coming from an orchid that a friend gave me!!! Wooohoo! She struggled to get it to spike but I applied all that I have learnt from you and boom, flower spike happening. It took 2 months of cool down, but it has finally happened. So stoked! Thanks Danny 🤗

Dani thank you so much for all your orchid help!!!! I had an orchid that was so sad looking, I figured it was completely dead and almost threw it out. After watching some of your videos, I decided to try and revive it. Well…. it has a new spike growing now!!!!!! I can’t believe it! 🥰 I was also gifted an orchid for my birthday and the blooms have lasted 3 months (and counting) because of your advice! You rock!

I recently read a National Geographic article that said that they believe flowers can hear bees buzzing closely and they make their pollen sweeter for them! It was quite fascinating. I do believe that plants are affected by the energy we give off and respond to touch and sound.

Thank you for the myth busting, I would like to see more. You have helped me in every aspect of this hobby. I have lost quite a few Orchids but I have brought some back to good health watching your videos and tips. My two most challenging problems were moving to Arizona, a very dry and Hot environment from Michigan a very humid environment. Getting the watering and media just right, to a gnat and spring tail infestation in all my plants. So, thank you for all your hard work and dedication to this channel.

I know a person who "waters" her orchids with ice cubes once a week and claims they blossom. And spreads this mindset to other people who don't know anything about orchids, I have no idea how to prove to her that she is wrong. She clearly sees positive reaction from the flowers. Shrug.
@vvoltyzerka3 жыл бұрын
I've got two that were really popular in an orchid group I once belonged to. One was that you should put rootless or dehydrated orchid upside down in water. The other thing was "never repot after purchasing". And not as in wait a day or two. Do not repot unless in breaks the pot with roots was the mindset.
@Kirke9103 жыл бұрын
Never repot after purchasing sounds like a ploy to hide bad roots. When your plant dies a month later, the vendor can say it wasn't them, it's you.

@Kirke9103 жыл бұрын
Ooh yes, phalaenopsis orchids definitely stress bloom! When they feel they are dying it triggers the need to pass on genes/replicate itself. So it will flower and produce keikis.

I talk to mine sometimes. Just coz. I wonder if it likes the music from the radio. I want to make a request for a video.... Or info..... I'd like to get some more orchids but would like to try orchids that aren't phals.... So perhaps an overview of the different types of orchids would be handy for me! As a relative noob to owning orchids, just wanna say..... I've never used ice cubes! And I'm glad I've opted for watering based on observation rather than a rigid routine. And I water less in the winter. I live in the UK which can get a bit humid at times. And it cools off nicely in the winter. I tried banana peel water the other day so it's interesting to hear you talk about it.

The benefit that the plant gets when we talk to it is the carbon dioxide we exhale after our bodies utilize oxygen. Plants use sunlight, soil, water, and carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. It is a symbiotic relationship because plants help create oxygen for us. So essentially, it is good to talk to your plants. 😊 ~ Science teacher

Thanks Danny! I enjoy watching your Videos very much. They are very helpful and I love the way you present it. I struggle with repotting my Cattleyas. Allmost every time I repot one of them, the older roots die off and I have to accept a setback. I admit keeping them dry for one week after repooting. Could this be the reason? Is there a way to avoid it, other than repooting them only when new growth starts? I'd love to see some show and tell videos about single (maybe tricky) orchids. (About the flower, how long it lasts, if it has a scent, how to treat this special one, what the difficulties are,...) Greetings from Aachen/Germany ❤

So what I’ve been told from an Orchid grower we use here on the East Coast about the Ice Cube method was that most ice cubes are about 1/4 cup of water. The “Ice Cube orchids” that are sold today in big box stores and supermarkets are kinda meant for those who don’t understand how to care for them! Hence place an ice cube or two on top of the pot and let it melt.. boom.. you haven’t over watered your orchid. But they don’t understand that that’s not enough water for their orchids to survive or stay healthy.

I'm learning from an expert here in the nursery they grow orchids They told me never to water or soak the roots He mentioned I can just spray the roots that are aerial is that true? Though he has millions of orchids every root is dry inside the pot but the aerial root He sprays every day 3 times a day
@MissOrchidGirl3 жыл бұрын
That is a big myth (lie? I am perplexed at what I hear from people sometimes lol) ☺️ plus, who has time to spray 3 times a day? If you have time sure, it will prolly keep some (not all) types of orchids hydrated.. and shower the roots in the pot too btw.. but why would you make your life soooo difficult? 🤔🤷🏻♀️

Can I reuse water which drains out of pot when watering?
@SpArK4GrL3 жыл бұрын
It’s generally not a good idea because it can spread diseases and pests from one of your plants to another! Watering a plant also rinses the excess salts/etc from fertilizer and this can be transferred to other plants that you water with the excess as well which isn’t good.

Dani, separate topic here, I broke about 2 inches of my orchid spike. Is that useless now? No buds yet only nodes.
@sjf27583 жыл бұрын
Depends on the orchid and how long the spike was when it broke. If it’s a Phalaenopsis and there are several node points, the orchid will send out a secondary spike. It would be as if you cut back to the first available node after it bloomed. If the spike is on an orchid that is not known to create secondary spikes, then yes, you will need to remove the spike and allow the orchid to start its growing phase again.
@Kirke9103 жыл бұрын
It might branch and still flower.
